As we approach the eve of 2016, we’re now almost exactly a month and a half away from the long-awaited New York Toy Fair 2016! I hope that Hasbro really knocks our socks off at the show with some secret Marvel Legends 2016 figures we’re not expecting–but the Doctor Strange wave won’t be one of them! The 2016 Marvel Legends Doctor Strange Series lineup has now been leaked out–UPCs and all!
While the Marvel Legends Dr. Strange series figures still haven’t been confirmed by Hasbro–and almost certainly will not be until the 2016 Toy Fair in February–the leaked computer database UPC codes for the series confirm what Hasbro has not yet!
The Marvel Legends 6″ Doctor Strange Infinite Series lineup will be as follows:
630509425327 Iron Fist
630509425334 Comics Doctor Strange
630509425341 Nico Minoru (Runaways)
630509425358 The Ancient One
630509425365 Brother Voodoo
630509425372 Karl Mordo (Baron Mordo)
630509425389 Movie Doctor Strange
630509438761 Movie Doctor Strange (Astral Form)
While I know many collectors are going to cry foul on two of the figures from this lineup sort of being part of the 2015 SDCC Exclusive Book of Vishanti set, it’s worth pointing out that this is a movie version of Astral Doctor Strange and a Brother Voodoo figure–not a Doctor Voodoo figure.
Could we finally be seeing an improved version of the Marvel Legends Brother Voodoo figure prototype that was debuted at SDCC 2009 as part of be Fan’s Choice Poll brought to production?
Hasbro has never released their own 6″ Doctor Strange figure in his classic costume, but I’m sort of hoping the comics Strange in this series is his modern All-New All-Different iteration.
We’ve already seen that Hasbro is wanting to release comics-based versions of upcoming Netflix characters (Misty Knight, Cottonmouth) before they appear in their respective series, so Iron Fist isn’t a big surprise here. And he and Stephen Strange were longtime comrades on the New Avengers, so that’s enough of a connection for me.
But which of the many Iron Fist costumes yet to be captured in six inch figure form will we see here…?
Nico Minoru isn’t exactly a mainstream character, but having been around in the comics for over a decade and a half now (originally in Runaways) and being a survivor of Murderworld in Avengers Arena, I think the teenage mystic sorceress has earned her spot (especially with her continuing appearances in the A-Force comic books).
The two figures in this lineup I’m most wary of sales-wise are The Ancient One and Baron Mordo. I don’t see either of these as characters that seem likely to thrive in retail stores, and I honestly wouldn’t be upset to see either scratched from the lineup. Despite the fact that these are characters that will be in the Doctor Strange movie next fall, these feel like truly risky action figures to me.
Finally, we’ve got movie versions of Doctor Strange and a movie Astral Version. Notice that the Astral Version has a totally different numbering scheme toward the end of the UPC code–if that’s not a telling hint that that figure will be a (Walgreens?) exclusive, I don’t know what is.
It’d be pretty lame to rehash Dormammu after he was in the SDCC set, and I’m not sure if Mephisto is a possibility (as he’s technically a Fantastic Four character), but I would love a Marvel Legends Shuma Gorath BAF, as he’s one of the few remaining Marvel vs. Capcom characters without a Legends counterpart. Would Hasbro invest unique tooling dollars in a tentacle monster mold that’s otherwise impossible to reuse, though…? We’ll see…
If the ML Dr. Strange series follows the pattern of the release of the toys for the late summer/fall superhero movies from the past two years (Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man), then we can make the presumption that this Dr. Strange wave will hit stores in July/August 2016. The wave will be available for pre-order from BigBadToyStore next summer, as well as other online and brick-and-mortar retailers.
I’ll post updates here and to the Marvel Toy News Twitter and Facebook Pages as more details regarding this series are revealed (including official confirmation of the series’ existence by Hasbro), and I’ll also be in attendance and proving coverage throughout the entirety of the NY Toy Fair in February. Look forward to it!
Thoughts on this essentially-confirmed Dr. Strange Marvel Legends figures series? If this is the lineup, what figures are you interested in? And for that matter, who would you like to see as the Build-A-Figure?
HYYYYYPE
Dammit.
That’s amazing.
Somehow, I hadn’t even considered an entire Doctor Strange Wave.
Especially not after the Book Of The Vishanti.
So awesome…..
Also, another Iron Fist? A new green one, I hope?
And this will literally DOUBLE the number of Marvel Legends Doctor Stranges. That’s pretty great.
I’ll need a whole Doctor Strange themed shelf….
The question is will the Baron Mordo be a comic-based figure or be in the likeness of Chiwitel Ejiofor?
The fact that he’s called “Karl Mordo” has me thinking it’s the latter since the movies never really use codenames anyway.
Almost certainly the comic version.
As long as the Iron Fist figure in this wave uses the new Pizza Spidey buck, I’ll be happy. The white Iron Fist figure from a few waves back looks a bit wonky.
I’d be very happy with that.
Cottonmouth isn’t a comic version of an upcoming Netflix character- the Luke Cage villain is a different character.
Thank god, a wave I can completely skip.
I feel like Iron Fist may be the new track suit look.
Why not change baron mordo for a movie series Baron Mordo then I’ll buy him, which the reason why I would buy his movie version is because I only buy movie figures theirs just to many comic book versions.
I purchased a Legends Series Xmen Deadpool the other day, instead of being packaged with alternate Deadpool head it was packaged with a Dr Strange Head, very cool
