Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially swung into theaters and appears to be a smash hit with fans, so it’s time for makers of toys and collectibles to start looking ahead to the next big theatrical entry to the MCU: spring 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie! And as such, this week Hasbro revealed and opened pre-orders for the 2022 Marvel Legends Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness figures series, featuring the first-ever ML Wong and more!
First up (and double-packed as he should be at two-per-case) is an updated Benedict Cumberbatch Strange 6″ figure.
Every other figure in this wave is one-per-case, although I think Wong might have been a strong enough seller to also get the double-packed treatment. Oh well. This was basically a mandatory inclusion for a Dr Strange movie wave, but at least it’s a good toy, as Hasbro gets better with each Stephen Strange they release.
He comes with extra hands with scarring on the backs of the fingers, a new cape and cool spellcasting hands with removable translucent effects attachments.
Astral Form Doctor Strange
Hasbro claims this figure is explicitly an upgrade from the first film, but it’s a tough sell to believe we won’t be seeing Benedict Cumberbatch in his incorporeal form in this sequel as well. The colors and overall aesthetic are a significant upgrade to the 2019 version, and more accurately depict the astral form from the source material in the original movie;. Apparently, Hasbro hadn’t even been able to see the movie when they made the first version of this astral form as an ML action figure, so they had to make guesses for the design! Is that a genie lamp he comes with…?
Marvel Legends Wong
Hasbro has supposedly had the premiere action figure of Wong in their game plan for a long time, bit was holding out for a Doctor Strange movie year wave to produce him.
ML Wong comes with a big-ass sword, his Sling Ring attached to his sash; a great actor likeness; alternate spelling hands and cool details on underside of his gauntlet that can’t be talked about yet.
Marvel Legends MCU America Chavez
From Young Avengers lore, it’s time for the dimension-hopping Miss America Chavez to get her first live-action figure, complete with stylish denim jean jacket! I’m not entirely sure how well this modern Marvel Comics character is going to mesh in the MCU, but I am excited to find out.
Marvel Legends Master Mordo
Karl Mordo was a surprise highlight of the first Doctor Strange movie for me, and I’ve been avidly anticipating seeing the character return, so I’m hyped to see this new Marvel Legends Master Mordo figure that I hope portends a big role in the movie for him.
Hasbro had little to say aboout Master Mordo beyond thst he has “cool weapons and sweet hair; a staff and smother weapon; more sorcerer-looking this time around”. For some reason, Hasbro seemed to sidestep talking about the crossbow Mordo comes with, despite releasing photos of it.
The Hasbro Marvel team didn’t have much to say about Marvel Legends Sleepwalker beyond that they’d teased him as a character with a trading card in the 991 Marvel Universe Series 2 set, which isn’t too surprising since he’s a rather niche fan-favorite semi-obscure hero. He only comes with some alternate hands and a Build-A-Figure leg, but I’m not really sure what else this character could come with as far as logical accessories go.
D’spayre
I hesitate to call any Marvel character that gets a 6” Legends mass release action figure “Z-List”, but Marvel Legends D’Spayre is about as close a character as I’ve seen to that distinction in ages. I’ve read multiple comic books with this character, but this demon is such a non-entity to me I still had to look him up.
His melty drip face and black-and-white color palette look cool, but realistically speaking, Hasbro might as well have labeled this as “Rando McDemon”, dine this is a toy that will mostly be sold just to fans wanting to complete their Marvel Legends Rintrah BAF.
The Build-A-Figure of this wave is also the sole debuting character from Multiverse of Madness getting a toy: Rintrah the green Minotaur-like man! Mythic Legions collectors will dig this, but it may be too early to say how the Rintrah BAF will be received by the MCU crowd. Hasbro noted that this Build A Figure is quite bulky despite not being that tall height-wise, and that this would be their first hooved MCU figure ever.
The Marvel Legends 2022 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness series is now up for pre-order, and is scheduled to be released in April 2022. Wong is sure to be the “hot” figure from this assortment, so get your order for him locked in first if you want one assured at non-scalper prices. I have a hunch that there just may be a few D’Spayres still available when this wave starts shipping out, though.
What are your thoughts on the first MCU Legends movie wave of 2022, Marvel collectors? What (if anything) are your must-haves from thid series…?
Am I the only person who never gets excited about these figures based not on comic versions but on movie versions? I don’t really want to own a Benedict Cumberbatch replica.
You aren’t alone. I have only purchased MCU based figures if I needed a BAF piece and thought it looked decent enough to be worth doing that instead of just finding the individual piece on eBay. The stars have to be in the right alignment for me to bother with them.
…looking forward to this wave…I see at least 3 MUST haves off the bat!
The only figure in this wave I’m getting is… D’Spayre! I loved that issue of Marvel Team-up with him in it. John Byrne for the win.
