One of the few things that I was disappointed to see no-show last week’s New York Toy Fair 2014 was the longtime-coming Figma Avengers action figures. I thought these 1/12 scale figures might show up at the Good Smile booth, but no dice. But fear not, import figure fans! Fairly comprehensive photo previews of the Figma Avengers Thor, Captain America and Iron Man have started to appear in Japanese magazines, giving us our best look at the trio yet! Do they look good? Well, yes… and no…
Considering that the awesome Figma Amazing Spider-Man movie figure is widely accepted as being the very best movie Amazing Spider-Man action figure released by any company, the expectations for these Avengers figures are rather high. Whether or not these figures are up to that standard looks like it’s going to very greatly by figure.
The Figma Iron Man Mark VII figure looks downright beautiful, and is probably the best of this trio of Figma figures. I think that this may legitimately be the very best Iron Man Mark 7 figure released by any company, which is pretty high praise considering how much I like companies such as Revoltech and Bandai.
While the Figma Iron Man 7 figure armor is simply gorgeous, the Tony Stark Robert Downey Jr. likeness under the flip-up faceplate falls squarely into the realm of “acceptable, but not good”.
The bad news is that not only is this Iron Man Mark 7 Figma figure expensive–but there’s going to be an even more expensive deluxe online exclusive version released via the Good Smile Online Shop.
While the regular version of Figma Iron Man will ship in August 2014 for 7,800 yen, the Figma Iron Man Full Spec. Version which includes most of Iron Man’s weapons will cost 8,800 yen. That’s almost $90 for a 5″ action figure, and it’s very likely we won’t get the deluxe version of Iron Man in the United States at all. Yikes.
Next up, we’ve got Thor. No other company has released a 1/12 Thor Avengers figure, so the Good Smile Company well and truly has the market cornered with this Thor figure. With an articulated cape and articulated hair, this Chris Hemsworth Thor figure is looking mighty fine to me. The likeness isn’t the greatest ever, but I love me some Thor, and I don’t see myself passing on this Figma Thor figure when it comes out in July 2014–even at a hefty 6,800 yen (about $68).
Finally, we’ve got the Captain America Figma Avengers figure. Oh… dear. This is easily the worst-looking of the three Avengers movie Figma action figures, so let’s hope that this gets some heavy revisions before its prospective release in Fall 2014. As it is, the articulation looks a bit strange (especially that torso joint), and that face is just indefensible right now.
The Figma Avengers movie Iron Man and Thor figures are due out in August and July 2014, respectively. The release date for Figma Captain America is still TBA, but is expected to be in fall 2014. I’ll place pre-order links once they’re available for order, and you can ‘Like’ Marvel Toy News on Facebook to have news, photos and updates sent straight to your Facebook Newsfeed.
Given their high price-points and long development time, I’m not altogether thrilled with the prototypes that we’re seeing for these 1:12 Avengers Figma action figures. What about you, Marvel fans–are these 5″ Thor, Captain America and Iron Man figures worth your $70-$90 each?
Have you seen the new disc wars avengers figures what are your thoughts?
Pre ordered disc wars Avengers just because they look different. Definitely japanese anime.
These Figma figures look amazing.. tho i dont care for Thor’s torso! Its extra long, out of place considering the other figures dont have that type of articulation joint type. Tha price is kinda insane… im gona pass on this awesome line.
