The Fantastic Four has basically been a “nuclear” property merch-wise for quite a few years now, with very little in the way of toys and statues being released aside from a few retailer exclusive Marvel Legends. But it appears that the floodgates have now been opened, and Funko is rushing in to capitalize with a massive number of new related F4 figures: the Funko Fantastic Four POP Vinyls and Mystery Minis are now up for order, including the whole team, Doom, Galactus and more!
Due to the Fantastic 4 movie rights being long held by Fox, the kibosh was put on F4 merch for over half a decade now. We’ve had basically zero statues or figures related to the team released by Kotobukiya, Sideshow, Diamond Select Toys, Mezco Toyz, Bandai and other companies in a long, long time.
But now that Marvel’s first family has come home to Disney/Marvel Studios, it looks like Reed and Co. are finally off of the blacklist and ready to start arriving at mass retail once again!
First up is an assortment of ten mass retail POP Fantastic Four figures—with an additional five on the way as retailer Exclusives! Now available for order online and coming to retail stores nationwide later this fall, we’ve got:
- Mr. Fantastic
- Invisible Woman
- The Thing
- Human Torch
- HERBIE
- Doctor Doom
- Galactus
- Silver Surfer
- Mole Man
- Super Skrull
The Fan 4 themselves look downright awesome, and it’s incredible to finally get the three-quarters of the team that had never been done before in POP Vinyl form. The classic look of Human Torch with the little painted on vertical lines puts a big-ass grin on my face, and getting H.E.R.B.I.E. is a wonderful surprise.
On the villains front, it’s good to see POP Doom and Silver Surfer back in the rotation with new and improved versions, and Super Skrull and Mole Man are a delight (even if I suspect Mole Man is going to sell like crap for Funko). I’m thrilled that Galactus will be getting a POP Vinyl, but it’s a real pity the World Devourer won’t be getting a super-sized version (at least, not at this time).
Who will be getting a larger version, however, is the Super-Sized 10” Thing POP exclusive to Target stores! These oversized Target exclusives have been exceedingly easy to snag at retail lately, and I hope that the 10” Ever-Lovin’ Blue Eyed Thing is no exception. Cool release, even if I would have preferred a 10” Galactus.
Four more Exclusives are also on the way:
- POP Trenchcoat Thing (Barnes and Noble)
- POP Johnny Storm (Hot Topic Exclusive)
- POP Glow in the Dark Johnny Storm (Specialty Store Exclusive)
- POP Invisible Woman Partially Invisible Variant (GameStop Exclusive)
All 4 of these look good and are logical variants to do of the main team, although I might have preferred some sort of wacky stretched version of Reed Richards to a GITD Johnny Storm.
But wait—there’s more!! There’s not, not two, but three differently-configured Fantastic Four Mystery Minis assortments! The main assortment going to mass retail and online stores will include:
- Two Versions of Mr. Fantastic
- The Thing
- Clear Invisible Woman
- Human Torch
- Super Skrull
- Namor (!!!)
- Mole Man
- Moloid (!!!)
- Dr. Doom
- Galactus
- Silver Surfer
Target will get an alternate version of the series, which will contain exclusive versions of non-Invisible Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and The Thing in Trenchcoat, by forgo including the mass-retail versions of all three of those characters.
Meanwhile, GameStop will be reviving their own alternate assortment, with exclusively reposed variants of Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom, as well as a partially-invisible Invisible Woman (all of which replace the standard versions of those characters).
All of the non-exclusive Fantastic Four POP Vinyls and Mystery Minis are now up for order online, and are scheduled to ship out right around the end of 2019/beginning of 2020. If you’re hoping to receive these by the end of the year, you might want to get in on an early pre-order so that you get one of the first shipments that go out. I imagine Galactus, Doom, Silver Surfer, Human Torch and Thing are all going to be hot sellers.
What do you think of this expansive range of Funko vinyl F4 figures, Marvel collectors? Will you be picking any of these characters up from their various lines, and what company would you like to see follow suit and begin pumping out their own Fantastic 4 toys and/or statues next?
Oh geez I want all of those Pop Vinyls. Definitely will try to snag them.
And yeah, no super-sized Galactus is a bummer. Hopefully he gets one down the line.
