Another day, another Funko variant. Last week I talked about the unannounced release of the Barnes and Noble exclusive Funko Black & White Captain America POP! Vinyls figure. Cap is an old-timey kind of guy and Funko loves their black and white variants, so that release was pretty commonplace. This latest release is going to be one that’s a lot more unexpected, however–the exclusive Funko Glow-in-the-Dark Captain America POP Vinyls figure! (Yes, that’s right–I said “Glow-in-the-Dark Captain America. Seriously.)
See, Funko doesn’t do a whole lot of Glow in the Dark POP Vinyls, and there have only been a handful of Marvel Funko Glow in the Dark POP Vinyls released (including a crazy-cool Glow in the Dark Ghost Rider POP Vinyl). So to see movie Captain America, of all characters, show up as a glow-in-the-dark variant? That’s just weird. What’s next–flocked Captain America?
Presumably we won’t be seeing the other Captain America The Winter Soldier POP Vinyls figures show up as GITD Variants, as the black paint that primarily covers the Winter Soldier and Black Widow Funko POP Vinyls isn’t really conducive to glow-in-the-dark features. I’m truthfully not sure that the blue glow-in-the-dark paint on this Captain America is going to work all that smashingly either, but I’m dying to find out.
This GITD Captain America 2 movie POP Vinyl shares #41 with the other versions of the Winter Soldier Captain America POP, so you can skip this figure entirely if you don’t like it and you just want to have one of each character released filling a specific slot in the Funko Marvel numbering sequence.
Personally, I think this latest Funko Captain America variant is just bizarre enough to really get my attention and make me smile. When I can force myself to venture into Hot Topic (which I need to do anyway to get the Hot Topic Game of Thrones Mystery Minis variants), I honestly think I might pick this weird Funko Glow in the Dark Captain America POP! Vinyl figure up.
What do you think about this latest Funko variant, Marvel fans? Do illogical releases like a glowing Captain America make you groan, or are you excited for the chance to add something unique and offbeat to your collection?
