Well, looks like I can cross another thing off the list of Marvel characters I never thought I’d live to see toys made of. I thought it was a pretty shocking one-off when we got a Marvel Legends Nico Minoru figure in the Doctor Strange Legends series in 2016, but I figured that was the full extent of figures we’d ever see for the team. But as they’re oft to do, Funko apparently thought otherwise: An entire series of Funko Runaways POP Vinyls figures was unexpectedly revealed this week! And oh yeah–video game-based Spider-Man and comic book Rocket Raccoon are on the way as well…
Even so, the Runaways comic books have never torn up the sales charts in the way I wished they would, and I never had much hope for toys—much less a TV Series! But last year a Hulu Runaways series did in fact arrive, and this year we’re getting (almost) the whole team as figures, courtesy of Funko!
The series contains six figures, all based off of their appearances in the Hulu Runaways series:
- Nico Minoru
- Alex Wilder
- Chase Stein
- Karolina Dean
- Molly Hernandez
- Gert Yorkes
First, let’s address the raptor in the room—or rather, not in the room. Old Lace, the Runaways raptor (yes, I know Old Lace isn’t technically a raptor, but whatever), is clearly nowhere to be found.
This is a glaring omission to the point where I feel like Funko must have Old Lace slotted in as a New York Comic Con 2018 exclusive. There’s just no way Funko would miss the most visually-interesting part of the whole team.
Of course, there’s one other aesthetically-pleasing figure that’s also notably absent: a powered-up, Rainbow Karolina Dean figure. Again, this is a variant that I wholeheartedly believe Funko is saving as an exclusive—the only question is when and where we’ll get her. The King of Exclusives never passes on a logical variant, after all!
For the most part, I’m satisfied with the six actual figures that we’re getting here. Karolina, Nico and Alex all look close enough to pass for their comic book counterparts, and Chase will as well once I repaint his hair blonde (I never liked that Hulu didn’t have the actor who plays Chase dye his hair).
Gert unfortunately is a lot thinner than her beloved comic book version design, but at least the purple hair is intact. Molly is ordinarily the cutest member of the team, but she looks a bit too scary to me in Funko form. Even so, I’m down for all six and anything else Runaways Funko wants to put into stores.
In addition to the Runaways, Funko announced two other upcoming Marvel POPs this month: a PS4 Spider-Man GamerVerse POP and a modern Annihilation-era Rocket Raccoon Comic-based figure.
I like the PS4 Spidey costume, but I don’t love it (yet). I think the Hasbro Legends 6” Version will be sufficient for me, but maybe I’ll change my mind when the game hits next month. Abnett & Lanning Rocket Raccoon, however, is my favorite version of that character and an unquestionable must-have.
The Funko POP Runaways, PS4 Spider-Man and Modern Rocket Raccoon figures are now up for order, and are scheduled to be released in September 2018 (Runaways) and November 2018 (Rocket Raccoon and Spider-Man). Rocket and GamerVerse Spidey are sure hot-sellers, but it will DEFINITELY be interesting to see how the Runaways fare as mass release toys!
Any other longtime Runaways fans in the house? Are you thinking about scooping up this set of Runaways Funko POPs, or are you lamenting that the figures aren’t comic book-based? And am I the only one hoping for Old Lace and Rainbow Karolina…?
Don’t care too much about Runaways and I’m not really waiting on yet another Spider-Man POP, but I’m definitely interested in comic version Rocket Raccoon. I wish Funko would release more comic based POP’s at regular retail. When will we finally get Rogue & Gambit for example?
