Square Enix’s Avengers video game is looking to topple 2018’s Spider-Man PS4 game as the king of the Marvel GamerVerse in May, but Spidey isn’t ready to give up his throne for a few more months! And as such, the merch for the best-selling game continues to roll out, expanding with a pair of brand new PVC figures that are GameStop Exclusives: Marvel Gallery Spider-Punk and PS4 Spider-Man on Taxi Cab are now up for order!
I think a lot of merchandisers were totally caught off-guard by the immense success and popularity of the GamerVerse Spider-Man PS4 video game, which is why we’ve really only seen a handful of product released that ties into the game (and most of that just Advanced Suit Spider-Man).
Now that the popularity of the game has had a chance to sink in, though, we’re seeing more product beginning to trickle out, including a new duo of GameStop Exclusive Diamond Select Toys PVC statues…
First up, let’s look at what is clearly the more exciting of the two new figures: Marvel Gallery Spider-Punk! As usual, this exclusive PVC statue is priced at $49.99, which I find to be more than fair for a 7” unique-sculpted figure like this with an elaborate base.
The colors and textures on the Spider-Punk Gallery figure really pop! This is definitely an eye-grabber of a Spidey statue. This is definitely among the most aesthetically-interesting PVCs that Diamond Select Toys has come up with in quite some time.
Ordinarily I worry about this level of detail being lost from PVC prototype to final product, but seeing as how DST has the actual finished figure in box along with the solicitation information, I don’t foresee a quality drop in this instance.
There is one thing about this release that seems a mite weird. The official description text for this piece claims that he’s surrounded by “barbed wire”, but it’s rather evident by looking at the photos of Spider Punk that what he’s surrounded by looks more like translucent energy waves than barbed wire. The effects here just don’t look like barbed wire to me at all—sorry, DST!
While Punk has the market cornered on “fun and different” Spidey variants, the other new statue feels a bit more commonplace (although that’s not necessarily a bad thing): Advanced Suit Spider-Man on Cab.
The original Advanced Suit Spider-Man Gallery PVC (with Spidey poised on a wall with his logo on it) felt somewhat rushed and awkward to me, so I don’t mind seeing the now quasi-iconic costume getting a second visit by DST.
I really like the concept of a Spider-Man atop a taxi statue, but this is just a roof of a taxi and no other part of the car. It gives the base a weird feel, although I totally dig the web-shooting pose and the Daily Bugle sign and yellow splash of color from the base.
The Diamond Select GameStop Exclusive Marvel Gallery Spider-Man on Taxi and Spider-Punk statues are now up for order, and are scheduled to ship on 1/8/2020 and 2/7/2020 (respectively). Since each one is over 35 bucks, you can get free shipping for either (or both). I’ve slowed down quite a bit in my Gallery collecting the last few months, but Spidey himself looks spectacular here—I’m really thinking about snapping this up, especially with it scheduled to ship in just a few days. And Punk is a must-have.
Any of you jazzed for this new dyad of Spider-Man GamerVerse statues, or has the ship sailed for you on collectibles for the video game at this point? If DST produces any more versions/costumes of Spidey from the game, what are you hoping to see them tackle?
