On the second day of their month-long Online Comic-Con 2013 celebration, Sideshow Collectibles has put up for sale their first new Marvel Comics product of the event: the long-awaited Gladiator Hulk Premium Format Figure statue from the legendary “Planet Hulk” storyline! This is one of the most monstrously huge and detailed Marvel Premium Format Figures that Sideshow Collectibles has ever produced, and it comes with an equally massive price tag as well…

Many comic book readers consider the “Planet Hulk”/”World War Hulk” storyline to be perhaps the greatest Hulk story ever told. Basically, the Marvel Universe’s Illuminati (don’t ask) decide that the Hulk is too dangerous to have around on Earth, so they rocket him to an alien world where they (foolishly) believe Hulk will be able to live in peace. That, of course, is not what happened–Hulk ended up on an oppressive alien world where he had to fight in the gladiator pits before returning and raining vengeance down upon the Earth.

Sound epic? It was–which is exactly why the storyline is so well-remember and well-loved that Sideshow Collectibles is commemorating the story with this incredible World War Hulk Gladiator Hulk statue.

If you want a quick and halfway-decent summary of the Planet Hulk story, the animated “Planet Hulk” movie is available for instant viewing on Netflix (which, come on, everyone has). You’ll be glad you did, too–I thought that “Planet Hulk” was one of the best animated films that Marvel put out.

Though the outfit isn’t quite right for it, this is probably the closest we’re ever going to get to a Worldbreaker Hulk from when the Hulk laid waste to Earth in “World War Hulk” and not even the awesome power of The Sentry (yeah, I liked the Sentry–sue me) could stop Hulk.

The Hulk Gladiator statue is immensely large–over two and a half feet tall, 19″ wide, and 15″ deep. In a world of enormous Sideshow Collectibles Premium Format Figures, this 1/4 scale Worldbreaker Hulk is among the biggest of all. Not only is this statue going to eat up a load of money if you choose to purchase it–it’s also going to take up a ton of space to be displayed properly.

From his leather kilt to his hyper-detailed armor, sword, and shield, the Gladiator Hulk Premium Format Figure has the aesthetics of a true work of art (while also retaining his nightmarish killer monster sensibilities, of course).

Of course, there’s a catch–and a rather expensive one at that. This amazingly detailed Gladiator Hulk Premium Format Figure statue is amazingly expensive, with a price of $599.99. Planet Hulk is one of my personal favorite Marvel stories of the last decade and I have fond memories of Hulk smashing in the gladiator pits of Sakaar, but even I have some trepidation a about dropping $600 on one statue.

The Sideshow Collectibles Gladiator Hulk Premium Format Figure statue is now available for pre-order for $599.99, with payment plans as low as $67.50 a month available. I don’t know that I would ever pay $600 outright for any statue, but the payment plan makes this statue slightly more feasible. Luckily, collectors will have lots of time to save up for this beast–the “Planet Hulk” Gladiator Hulk Premium Format Figure is scheduled for release in April 2014.
