With all of the amazing new sixth scale figures that Hot Toys debuted at the 2014 Toy Soul event in Hong Kong, it seems a bit ungrateful to be disappointed about something that Hot Toys didn’t show at the event. But Hot Toys announced three figures would definitely debut at Toy Soul 2014, and one of those characters was a no-show: the Hot Toys Ultron figure. But while we disappointed by the lack of an all-new Ultron figure, as a consolation prize, we did get to see updates Avengers Age of Ultron Hot Toys Captain America and Black Widow figures…
I suspect that we’ll actually be seeing a variety of Hot Toys Ultron figures before all is said and done (perhaps includng Sub-Ultron Drones and Ultimate Ultron and so forth), but for the moment, we’ll have to settle for seeing new versions of old characters.
Firstly, let’s look at Captain America. The Age of Ultron Captain America costume is visually very different from its predecessors, so it doesn’t feel rehashed to me at all. For his AoU look, Captain America’s costume is a sort of amalgam of his Winter Soldier Stealth Suit and his Golden Age/Avengers costumes.
I was initially really put off by the Hot Toys Age of Ultron Captain America figure, as the first photo I saw of him looked rather awkward. As I’ve seen better images of the figure, however, I’ve turned around on him totally. I actually really like the added areas of red on Cap, and the contrasting shades of blue look fantastic.
The Avengers 2 Hot Toys Captain America figures doesn’t have only visual improvements, though–there’s also been a key functional change. For the first time ever, this Hot Toys Captain America shield will attach to Captain America magnetically, eliminating the need for a strap on the shield.
Assuming this turns out well in production, I’m really looking forward to the new, magnetized Captain America shield.
As with most of the figures Hot Toys debuted over the weekend, Black Widow is sporting an old Scarlett Johansson head sculpt (for now). Odds are that we will almost certainly get an all-new head sculpt on the final figure, however.
While not as drastic as Captain America’s, Black Widow’s costume also adds red and blue highlights for Avengers Age of Ultron. The blue lines strike me as looking a bit weird, but the red on Black Widow’s wrists feels really comic-inspired and classic to me.
The best new addition to the Hot Toys Avengers Age of Ultron Black Widow, however, is the new batons that the figure comes with! The paint deco gives the batons a certain energy and really draws the eye to them, and I’m thrilled that we’re getting these cool weapons for Natasha next year!
The Avengers Age of Ultron Hot Toys Captain America and Black Widow figures should be up for order in spring 2015, with a likely arrival in fall/winter 2015. I’ll post updates here and to the Marvel Toy News Facebook Page as Hot Toys continues development in these figures and shares more images and release specifics with us.
Sound off, Marvel collectors! Are you liking what you see with the latest Hot Toys Avengers 2 figures, as early in development as they are? Will you be assembling a Hot Toys Age of Ultron Avengers team in 2015?
