Although Hot Toys didn’t exhibit at the actual New York Toy Fair 2016, their presence was definitely felt in the collecting world over the last few days, as they officially announced their first pair of non-die cast Civil War Movie Masterpiece Series sixth scale figures. And hey, who better to kick off the line than the titular character himself? The AOU Captain America sold out quickly and skyrocketed on the aftermarket, but now you’ve got a chance at the updated costume: the Hot Toys Civil War Captain America 1/6 figure is now up for order!
Unfortunately for those fans, the Hot Toys AOU Cap quickly sold out and prices exploded on the aftermarket. As a result, collectors who didn’t want to pay an extra 30% or more above retail for that particular version of Cap were out of luck. But wait–Steve Rogers is back in the “Civil War” movie this summer with a slightly tweaked costume–and Hot Toys is making their own sixth scale figure of Civil War Captain America in this ever-so-slightly-updated costume!
There are a couple of improvements to the Civil War Captain America Hot Toys figure, with the primary one being the fact that it looks like Cap’s shoulders have been slightly broadened for this version of the figure. The Age of Ultron Cap is my favorite 1/6 of him released to date, but the shoulders really didn’t seem to be wide enough. I’m glad to see HT addressing that with this new, updated costume.
Also, in order to incorporate the new swap-out mouths (more on that in a bit), this Captain America figure’s head and neck will be separate pieces. This is going to definitely improve the articulation and range of motion of Steve’s head, which is a definite positive.
In addition, MMS 350 Captain America’s shield is looking like it’s going to be painted with a much shinier, glossy paint this time out than the matte-painted shield that we got for Avengers: Age of Ultron. My feeling on the shield is always “the shinier, the better”, so I’m pleased with this move.
As is thankfully becoming the norm, this figure will also include a switch-out unmasked Steve Rogers Chris Evans head. Hot Toys unfortunately screwed up the paint on the left eye of the prototype, making Steve look a bit cross-eyed. Even so, I’ve never gotten a cross-eyed MMS figure yet, and I have zero doubts that the production figure will be without this defect.
That’s right, you can choose to have your helmeted Captain America sixth scale figure with either a serious expression or a teeth-bared, angry mouth! Swap-out mouths is a downright brilliant idea for spicing this figure up–I wish Hot Toys had thought of this years ago!
The Hot Toys Captain America Civil War sixth scale figure is now up for order, and is expected to be released in summer 2016. With the surprising sell-out and scary secondary market prices for this figure, combined with the demand for Cap himself in a movie year, I have a feeling that this is going to be one of the best-selling and fast-selling Movie Masterpiece Series figures released in 2016.
What do you think about this year’s new version of Cap himself, Marvel collectors? Is this iteration an improvement over last year’s Age of Ultron version, or are you content with last year’s (or any of the preceding years’) sixth scale Captain America figures?
This has a ton of accessories for $225. Bucky has one gun for $220. How does that make sense? I already have the AOU Cap. That’s enough Cap for me. I would get this one if I didn’t already have one though.
Just placed my order. This one is going to look great next to the die-cast Iron Man Mark 45 I already ordered.
I hope the black panther figure looks like he did in entertainment weekly and the super bowl spot, he look awful in the first trailer..
The angry mouth with the non-expressive eyes just makes him look like he’s growling. I would’ve preferred an alternate head entirely, with furrowed brows and angrier eyes.
