I was legitimately more excited for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie than any other movie coming out this year that doesn’t have a talking raccoon in it. A month ago, Hot Toys could have sold me pretty much anything with an Amazing Spider-Man 2 logo on it. Then I actually saw the Amazing Spider-Man 2, and I became a whole lot more selective about what I’d buy from that movie. Whatever 1/6 figures Hot Toys produced from the movie would have to be really excellent to get my attention. And as it so happens, the Hot Toys Electro figure that is now up for order looks downright awesome…
I cried twice when I saw Amazing Spider-Man 2 (the second time was when I saw the way that they had animated the Rhino walking around at the end of the movie), so the movie made a pretty big impression on me. Unfortunately, most of those impressions were negative. And one of the aspects of the movie that I was least impressed with was the (sort of) main antagonist of Amazing Spider-Man 2: Electro.
I would have much preferred to have seen more of Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn/Green Goblin and not had Electro at all, but Electro was the main villain of Amazing Spider-Man 2, so… here we are.
While Electro is definitely not in my list of favorite movie villains, Hot Toys still did a real bang-up job with the MMS 246 Electro Movie Masterpiece Series figure. The likeness to the Electro character in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie is absolutely fantastic, and the paintwork on Electro’s head is simply incredible. It’s a real mark of excellence when a toy company can make you drool a little bit over the quality of a character you don’t even like.
The Electro Hot Toys MMS 246 1/6th figure also has what I believe to be a unique feature: To my knowledge, this is the first time Hot Toys has ever put an LED light into the head of a non-Iron Man figure. I don’t know what other non-armored character would need an LED light in their head (besides Cyclops), but I figured it was worth noting nonetheless.
This wouldn’t be one of my preview articles if I didn’t stop and gripe about all the areas where this figure could be improved, of course. This time, I have to say that the weakest component of this MMS246 Hot Toys Electro figure is the base, of all things. The purple/blue energy reflections on this base might actually be okay–if it wasn’t for the doofy cartoon lightning bolt imprinted on the base. The lightning book looks totally out of place and ruins the whole appearance of the base.
Secondly, considering the fact that Electro runs around Manhattan in a hoodie and sweat pants for a significant chunk of the movie (and wears those clothes in his first battle with Spider-Man), it seems pretty weird to me that Hot Toys didn’t include a hoodie or pants for this Electro figure to wear. When you’re already charging north of 250 bucks for a figure, what’s a few dollars more, right?
The Hot Toys Electro 1/6 figure is now up for order on the Sideshow Collectibles website, and is expected to ship out in late 2014/early 2015. I’m on the fence about this figure myself, as Amazing Spider-Man 2 Electro is a character I don’t like at all, but the figure looks really, really good.
What do you think about the Hot Toys Amazing Spider-Man 2 Electro sixth scale figure, Marvel collectors? Anyone besides me contemplating adding this outstanding figure of a less-than-outstanding character to this Marvel collections?
