Hot Toys kicked off the month in a monumental way by announcing that for this year’s “2020 Toy Fair Exclusive”/”Summer Convention Exclusive”/”San Diego Comic Con Exclusive” releases, we wouldn’t be seeing just one or two of the offerings being Marvel-themed… all four would be from Marvel movies and video games! Sideshow Collectibles seems to be spreading out the pre-orders for these across “Comic Con At Home” week, and they’re starting big with the one I expect to be most popular: the Exclusive Hot Toys Spider-Man 2099 Figure is now up for order!
I was a 90s teenager, which means that growing up I thought Peter David’s Spider-Man 2099 was one of the most edgy and badass superheroes ever. Two decades plus later, I haven’t necessarily adored the way that Miguel O’ Hara has been used in the comics the last few years, but I still have an undeniable affinity for that classic Spider-Man 2099 costume.
So when Hot Toys announced that they were going to have an Exclusive 2099 Spider-Man sixth scale figure during what would have been SDCC 2020 week…? Yeah–I’ve been on high alert and ready to pull the trigger ever since. And today–I did! Is the figure any good, though?
To be totally blunt: heck yeah, it is. Quite frankly, other than that insanely-detailed $700 Prime 1 Studio statue from years ago, this is the best-looking Spider-Man 2099 item that I have ever seen. And unlike P1’s—this Spidey 2099 is actually poseable!
When you get up-close with this 12″ Spider-Man 2099 Movie Masterpiece Series (MMS) figure, you can see just how intricate the texture is on Miguel’s costume. Hot Toys is known for their incredible high-quality costumes, and this is another in a long line of them.
Accessories-wise, we get an extensive collection of a dozen interchangeable hands, along with web shooters, an open web effect, six sizes of web lines and the ubiquitous figure display stand. There’s obviously no cape or unmasked Miguel O’ Hara head since this figure is based on the PS4 GamerVerse video game, but everything else one might ask for is present here.
The only trivial thing about this figure that strikes me as a bit weird is that it’s being referred to as the “2099 Black Suit”, which isn’t a name I can ever remember seeing associated with a 2099 Spidey costume (what with how this costume is clearly blue and always has been).
The Hot Toys Spider-Man 2099 Exclusive sixth scale figure is now up for pre-order on Sideshow’s website while supplies last, and is expected to be released in fall 2020. After the lightning-fast sell-out of the Scarlet Spider 1/6 figure last summer, I suspect we’re going to see a similarly fast sell-through of this iconic costume. I feel kind of bad for the niche Negative Suit Spider-Man figure that’s been in-stock since last year, but it is what it is for obscure variants like that one. Alas.
Hot Toys collectors–who’s psyched for this Spider-Man 2099 MMS figure? Do you think this is going to be another hot item like Scarlet Spider was last year, and are you placing an order for this “Toy Fair exclusive” item yourself?
I love Spidey 2099, but I hate that they always give him pointed finger nails instead of the claws like the comics. For 6 inch figures I can forgive them, but a 12 inch Hot Toys, c’mon.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe that’s how this costume is referred to in the PS4 game. Probably because the game also features the redesigned 2099 white suit from Peter David’s return to the character a few years ago. Love both versions and I’m sure Hot Toys will be giving us the white suit as well.
