Hot Toys loves teasing their collectors with upcoming figures, and they’ve teased the Hot Toys Ultron figure more than most. The Ultron Hot Toys figure was supposed to be unveiled at Toy Soul 2014 back in December, but no-showed the event. Then Hot Toys sent out a teaser image of Ultron’s back–usually preamble to an impending pre-order–but then threw us a curveball by putting up Captain America and Thanos instead. But now, the Pinocchio-loving robot will finally have his day–the Hot Toys Ultron Prime figure is now up for order!

Although we’ve been seeing Avengers Age of Ultron movie trailers for months now, we really don’t know all that much about the titular villains (other than the fact that he really, really hates strings). In fact, it was only a few weeks ago that it was totally confirmed which of the character designs that we’ve seen floating around even was the prime Ultron!

Now, thanks to Hot Toys, we’re getting our absolute best look at the character design for Ultron Prime–in the form of what’s certain to be the very best Ultron Prime action figure available.

If you’re a Hot Toys Iron Man collector, then by now you’re familiar with the electronics that Hot Toys likes to incorporate into its sixth scale mech figures. The MMS 284 Hot Toys Ultron Prime figure itself (I’ll talk about the base shortly) will have two main areas with electronic light-up features: Ultron’s piercing red eyes and glowing upper torso (creepy!).

I rarely bother to turn on the electronics on my Iron Man Hot Toys figures, but I can already tell that Ultron is a figure I’m going to want to light up and show off frequently–his electronics make him look amazing!

Because of the fact that we haven’t seen a whole lot of Ultron himself yet in the various Avengers AOU trailers, one factoid about Ultron Prime that many fans may be unaware of is the fact that Ultron is huge. As a result, the Hot Toys sixth scale Ultron Prime MMS284 figure will be 41 cm (over 16″!) tall. That means that he’ll tower over all of the other Hot Toys Avengers figures out there (with the exceptions of Hulk and Hulkbuster Iron Man).

Some folks are bound to be disappointed that this Ultron figure isn’t die-cast, but I think the costs and logistics of making a 16″ tall robot out of die-cast have to be taken into consideration: mainly, the fact that this would easily be a $500 figure if it was composed entirely of die-cast metal.

At that cost, I suspect only the most die-hard fans would be picking up the Hot Toys Ultron Prime MMS, as opposed to a far greater number than can afford a plastic sixth scale Ultron figure.

I know some collectors were concerned that the various different Hot Toys Avengers Age of Ultron bases were just going to be generic with stickers on them or some-such, but the photos of Ultron Prime’s base confirm that that is absolutely not the case. In fact, not only will Ultron Prime’s base be intricately sculpted, but it will have red light-up features–just like Ultron!

I’m not the type of person to “oooo” and “ahhhh” over a base, but the Hot Toys Ultron Prime figure base really does look incredible. Bravo, Hot Toys.

Of course, all of this massive size and light-up goodness comes at a price: $2380 HK, the equivalent of about $300 US. While Sideshow Collectibles (the official U.S. distributor of Hot Toys products) hasn’t announced their official pricing for the Ultron Prime Movie Masterpiece Series figure yet, I think we can reasonably assume that he’ll be priced in the $300-$350 range.

That’s definitely a lot of money for any figure, but for a 16″ Hot Toys-quality figure, I won’t complain (much). And hey–the Ultron Hot Toys figure will be both taller and cheaper than Hot Toys Thanos (though Ultron will come sans awesome flying throne)!

The 1/6 Hot Toys Avengers Age of Ultron Ultron Prime figure will be up for order later today, with an estimated arrival in Q4 2015. As the primary antagonist of Avengers: Age of Ultron and one of Marvel’s most classic villains of all-time, I expect the sales on Ultron to be pretty brisk.
