The central theme of Iron Man 3 is that it is the strength, bravery and intelligence of an individual that makes them a hero–not their weapons or technology. We see this with both Tony Stark (who spends the vast majority of the movie without armor) and James Rhodes (who is far more effective outside the Iron Patriot armor than he is in it in the film). So it’s only fitting that amongst an armada of Iron Man suits, Hot Toys capture both of Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic appearances from Iron Man 3. The first Workshop Tony Stark has been up for order for months, and the new (and far cooler) Hot Toys Tony Stark the Mechanic figure is now up for pre-order!
When people first started to see the “Iron Man 3” movie, many were saving to order the Workshop Tony Stark Iron Man 3 Hot Toys figure, as that would be the look for Robert Downey Jr. that would be best-remembered from the movie. For me, that’s not quite true–the Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark that I picture in my mind is this one–the Tony Stark who builds an arsenal from Home Depot and then dresses in street clothes to infiltrate the Mandarin’s mansion! That’s why, for me, this 1/6 Iron Man 3 Hot Toys Tony Stark The Mechanic figure may be the biggest “must have” of the entire lineup.
Originally Hot Toys intended to call this the Iron Man 3 Hot Toys “Tony Stark Mandarin Mansion Assault” figure, but the licensor (Marvel) put the kibosh on that name for obvious reasons. Instead, Hot Toys has changed the 1/6 scale figure’s name to “Tony Stark the Mechanic” (and I’m glad they did, since Tony Stark’s core as a mechanic is such a focal point of Iron Man 3).
The sheer number and variety of accessories that this upcoming 2014 Hot Toys Iron Man 3 The Mechanic Tony Stark figure comes with is both diverse and staggering. The amazingly detailed backpack is by far my favorite accessory that this figure comes with, and I’m also a huge fan of the civilian jeans and hoodie Tony Stark is sporting. He also comes with a plethora of home-made weapons and tools, an Iron Man armor leg and gauntlet, sunglasses and more.
One of the more unique accessories this figure comes with is an augment-cognition headset with holographic effects. I can see what Hot Toys was going for here, but I feel like this particular accessory looks a little funky on the Mechanic Tony Stark figure. Maybe I’ll like the augmented cognition headset more in person, but I suspect my Tony Stark will be primarily hanging out with his hood up instead.
The only accessory that I wish we were getting that isn’t included with this Tony Stark The Mechanic Hot Toys figure is an alternate head sculpt. This figure’s head seems to just be a bloody repaint of the other Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man 3 Hot Toys head, which is a little bit boring (particularly since I have that figure on order as well). We’re a long way out from this figure’s release, however, so I still think that it’s possible we’ll see a new or revised head sculpt a few months from now.
You’ll have a bit of time to save up for this addition to your collections, as The Mechanic Tony Stark 1/6th scale figure has a scheduled release date of March 2014. The Hot Toys Iron Man 3 Tony Stark The Mechanic sixth scale figure is now available for pre-order in the United States through Sideshow Collectibles. I ordered this figure instantly (as in “seconds after it became available”), and will post a full review and photo gallery when he arrives next year.
