Sam Wilson’s short tenure as Captain America may have come to an end last year, but the merch for Falcon Captain America is likely to continue coming in small bursts for years to come. And so, even though Sam Wilson has gone back to his better-known identity of The Falcon, Kotobukiya is producing Sam for their first-ever time–in his Cap persona: the Kotobukiya Sam Wilson Captain America ARTFX+ statue is now up for order!
- Black Panther
- Scarlet Witch
- Ant-Man and the Wasp
- Sam Wilson Captain America
- Vision
- Captain Marvel
- Thanos
Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and the Ant-Man/Wasp combo went up for order earlier this year, and now it’s Sam Wilson’s time to shine in 1/10th scale PVC form!
All that said, this Cap Falcon ARTFX+ statue is, well… a little bit underwhelming. I’d seen the Adi Granov artwork that this figure is based upon months ago, so it wasn’t shocking that Sam Wilson’s wings aren’t included with this figure… but it definitely is still a bitter disappointment to not see them included.
The Falcon wings are the single most defining characteristic of Sam Wilson’s Captain America costume, and I hate that they’re not even an optional attachment for this costume. Hasbro got away with leaving them off (sort of) by making the Marvel Legends version of the character using a mold that wasn’t suitable for attaching wings and included it in an exclusive multipack, but for a high-end statue company like Kotobukiya to do the same with a 100% unique sculpt definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Even without the wings, I think this is just an “okay” Captain America/Falcon statue. Diamond Select Toys released a much more dynamic PVC statue (with wings) for almost half the price last year, and that version looks a lot more interesting to me overall than this iteration does. For 75 bucks MSRP, I think that Kotobukiya could have used a less flat red on Sam’s goggles, and I don’t really like the awkwardness of theirs having a rock under just one foot as the whole base.
The Sam Wilson Captain America Kotobukiya ARTFX+ statue is now up for order, and is scheduled to be released in March 2019. The $74.99 MSRP is too high for a 6″ plastic figure in this day and age, in my opinion, but at least BBTS has him marked down five bucks to $69.99. Even so, I can’t see this being a huge seller at that price–I’d personally be surprised if we don’t see this heavily discounted a year from now.
What do you guys think of the newest entry in the Kotobukiya Avengers ARTFX+ Series 2 lineup, as well as the figures we’ve seen solicited thus far in the line as a whole? Are you impressed with these additions to the original series, or are you feeling underwhelmed by the art direction, pricing, or some other aspect of this expanded line?
