Kotobukiya Thanos Fine Arts Statue Photos & Order Info!

Kotobukiya teased us with their 1/6 Thanos statue at NYCC 2015 and then showed off the prototype in-person for the first time at the 2016 New York Toy Fair, so it’s been over half a year now that we’ve known this piece has been coming. But now we know when the Mad Titan is coming, what extras he’s coming with, and for how much–the Kotobukiya Thanos Fine Arts Statue is now up for order!

Kotobukiya Grinning Thanos Head Fine Arts Statue

Although he’s long been one of the most dreaded villains in the Marvel Universe and one of the most expensive characters to obtain from popular high-end collectibles lines, Thanos has never gotten his due from Kotobukiya–until now!

Koto aims for quality over quantity with their Fine Arts Statues line, and as such, Thanos will be the second and final Marvel Fine Arts statue that they release in 2016 (after their extremely awesome Black Panther that hit this spring).

Back of Thanos Kotbukiya Statue 2016Although Thanos’ costumes haven’t changed all that drastically over the years, Koto definitely opted for a hyper-detailed modern interpretation of Thanos. I think that’s a great idea on their part, as even though I own a couple of Bowen Designs Thanos statues in his classic look, I don’t mind going to the well again and purchasing a more modern-looking Thanos figure like this one!

Kotobukiya Thanos Statue Infinity Gauntlet Close-UpThough he rarely gets to have the weapon, Thanos’s most iconic look is when he’s wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. That’s what everyone expects to see on his left hand, and thankfully, Kotobukiya has delivered. The Infinity Gauntlet looks shiny and well-detailed, just the way it should.

Kotobukiya Thanos Fine Arts StatueIt’s a real toss-up between which look for Thanos is more popular with fans: a closed-mouthed grin or an enraged, teethy sneer. Koto isn’t going to make collectors choose, however–the Kotobukiya Fine Arts Thanos statue will include heads sporting both of these signature expressions for the Mad Titan. Thanks, Koto!

Thanos Kotobukiya Statue with Mouth Closed HeadThe base for Thanos is just some dirt and skulls atop a black circular pedestal. It’s simple and effective, and doesn’t distract away from the intimidating visage of Thanos himself at all. Thumbs up.

Unlike the popular ARTFX and ARTFX+ lines of figures, the Fine Arts statues are made of resin and have much heftier and richer paint jobs. The downside to this is the larger price-tag of the Fine Arts statues, and at $299.99, the 15.5″ Thanos statue is more expensive than any ARTFX statue that I can remember.

That said, with Sideshow Collectibles regularly charging $500 and up now for their 1/4 scale statues, sixth scale statues and their far, far lower price-points are looking better and better these days. (And who am I kidding–I’m a sixth scale fanboy at heart.)

Koto Thanos Statue with Infinity GauntletThe Thanos Kotobukiya statue is now available for order, and is scheduled for release in December 2016. There’s a $30 off pre-order discount right now at BBTS on him, which I, for one, am thankful for. It’s rare for a Koto statue to sell out during the pre-order stage, but Thanos statues in particular tend to sell out quickly and rise in price on the aftermarket, so keep your eyes open if you’re worried about missing out on this piece.

Are you impressed with Kotobukya’s take on Thanos, Marvel collectors? Will you be dropping $299 for this 15″+ sixth scale statue later this year, or are you waiting to see what Thanos merch other companies produce as we draw nearer and nearer to his starring role in the Avengers Infinity War movies?
