Not to be outdone by Batman, Spider-Man is busting his Spider-Helicopter out of the garage next year and taking his fight against crime to the sky! Didn’t know Spider-Man owned a giant attack helicopter? Neither did anyone else, but LEGO has the inside scoop! Last but not least in my coverage of the LEGO Marvel 2014 sets, it’s the set that can rival all of the others from this wave in both minifigures and wackiness factor–the 2014 LEGO Marvel Spider-Helicopter Rescue 76016!
In addition, Hasbro has previously released a Playskool Heroes Spider-Man Helicopter toy, there have been remote control Spider-Man helicopters, and even a Marvel Transformers toy where Spider-Man is a helicopter. So rather than drone on about the ridiculousness of this concept, I’m just going to consider this LEGO carrying on the storied tradition of LEGO Helicopters.
I haven’t seen every episode of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series (blasphemy, I know), so I’m certain if the LEGO Spider-Helicopter is an accurate representation of what appears in that cartoon (or if such a vehicle ever exists at all in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, for that matter).
That said, with its missile-firing action and rotating VTOL wings, this seems like it might be just a little, uh, extreme for teenage Peter Parker. It’s a cute enough vehicle, but it’s probably going to end up costing around $50, so I would have preferred something a bit smaller and simpler.
Of course, let’s get real–no one buying this 76016 LEGO Marvel Spider-Copter Rescue set is doing so for the Spider-Copter. The big allure here is that the set includes four minifigures, of which one hasn’t been seen in a decade and another are all-new. I talked at length about the 2014 LEGO Mary Jane and Power Man figures when photos first leaked out of them, but this is our first chance to get a good look at the LEGO Ultimate Green Goblin figure.
There was a lot of hate spewed by LEGO fans when they first saw that this Green Goblin minifigure wasn’t a representation of the Classic Green Goblin design, but the more I see the Ultimate Green Goblin character design, the more I like it. This is a good use of the modern LEGO Big Figures concept, and the armor is fairly accurate to the Ultimate Green Goblin’s appearance in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. The brick-built LEGO Goblin Glider looks quite nice and sturdy as well. I’m gonna chalk up this Ultimate Green Goblin LEGO minifigure as a victory.
The LEGO Marvel 2014 Spider-Helicopter Rescue 76016 set is scheduled for release in March/April 2014. We most likely won’t get the item specifics on the set such as its price and piece count until close to its release date, but I’ll post an update once those details are available.
Is the LEGO Spider-Copter too ridiculous to adorn your collection, LEGO fans? Or is the superb selection of included minifigures enough to get this 2014 LEGO set into your household?
