Medicom Toy has drank the Spidey kool-aid and is diving deep into Spider-Man waters with their popular MAFEX figures series, producing a variety of figures from the comics, MCU movies and even Into The Spider-Verse. And now, having recently released their Infinity War Iron Spider, they’re going back to that well one more time: the MAFEX Endgame Iron Spider with Nano Gauntlet is now up for order! Does he differ enough from the original version to warrant a fresh purchase…?
There has never been any shortage of Spider-Man merch out there, but the amount of MCU Spidey movie figures in the land has really ballooned since last year, with seemingly every company (understandably) churning out a multitude of new versions of Spidey each year now.
And for Medicom, that number is about to get ++’ed, because an Avengers Endgame variant of their Iron Spider 6” figure has now been solicited for release in 2020! Let’s have a looksie…
At a glance, this figure looks pretty familiar—because it is. Medicom Toy solicited a MAFEX Infinity War Iron Spider last year, which is presently available. The figure was decently-received, as it included a vital feature that the first Bandai SH Figuarts Iron Spider did not—the mechanical robot legs that attach to Spider-Man’s back (although I’ve heard those legs were quite fragile).
So hey, if that movie action figure sold well and the mold already exists, might as well cash in on the suit’s return for Avengers Endgame, right…? And thus, we have this repainted, slightly reworked Avengers 4 version of Peter Parker on the way now.
It’s hard to be absolutely certain from the official photos without having a side by side comparison, but the metallic paint on this iteration of MAFEX Iron Spider looks to be noticeably darker than that of the original release.
In addition, we’re getting three interchangeable masks this time (including Instant Kill Mode!), as opposed to the singular one that came with the first Iron Spider-Man MAFEX.
And while we seemingly lose the magnetic feet from the first edition, we gain a pretty cool-looking Stark Nano Gauntlet accessory that Spidey can carry around. It looks nice, and will fit in well with Marvel Legends displays (as Hasbro hasn’t done the Nano Gauntlet in this scale yet, for whatever reason).
All that said, I’m opting for the Bandai SH Figuarts Endgame Final Battle Iron Spider figure instead, personally. I trust Bandai to make the spider legs nice and sturdy, and the same perks like an Instant Kill Mode head and the Nano Infinity Gauntlet are included with the Figuarts release—along with an unmasked Tom Holland head and a release almost half a year earlier (May 2020)!
I know there are some hardcore proponents of the Medicom MAFEX Marvel figures series out there, but I think they might be a little too late to the party this time out. Although ultimately, we won’t know who has won the Endgame Iron Spider war until both figures are out next year!
The Avengers Endgame Iron Spider MAFEX #121 figure is now up for order, and is scheduled to be released in September 2020. Medicom doesn’t have a license to distribute these in North America, so it’s either import yourself or purchase from an importer like BBTS. I can’t see this guy selling out any time soon—especially not while the IW version is still available—so you’ve got time to deliberate if you think this might be the armored Peter Parker for you.
Any thoughts on this new pick from Medicom Toy, Spidey fans? Is this a necessary upgrade to the Infinity War iteration, or is this Avengers Endgame Iron Spider a cash-grab with minimal advances?
Hasbro has done the nano gauntlet in that scale, with the Mark 85 figure
