If you’re like me (and you must be at least a little bit like me, or you wouldn’t be on this blog reading this post), you were woefully disappointed that no developer stepped up to bat to create a Guardians of the Galaxy video game to coincide with the blockbuster movie’s release. (Movie tie-in video games are almost always duds, mind you, but it would have been nice nonetheless.) But fear not, fellow Guardians of the Galaxy fanatics! Disney themselves is going to fill the void and give us the Guardians of the Galaxy gaming action we’ve been craving–and toys to go with it! The Disney Infinity Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set and all five members of the Disney Infinity Guardians of the Galaxy figures are now up for order!
The figures being released include the entire roster of this summer’s most popular superhero team–the Guardians of the Galaxy! I was honestly a little afraid that Disney would chicken out and skip over Gamora or Drax, but that is thankfully not the case.
The Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes video game has a lot of original Guardians of the Galaxy-specific gameplay content included, but in order to access any of that content, you’ll have to purchase the Disney Infinity Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set. As fellow toy collectors, I’m sure your heads lurched upward at the term “Playset”, but it’s unfortunately not what you’re thinking.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Disney Infinity “play set” consists of a $35 set that includes a little clear plastic Milano Spaceship and exclusive Disney Infinity figures of Star-Lord and Gamora. When playing the Disney Infinity 2.0 video game, you utilize the clear plastic Milano “play set” piece to access the Guardians of the Galaxy story levels of the video game.
So although the GOTG levels are built into the Disney Infinity Marvel video game itself, you can’t play them (at all) without first purchasing the Guardians of the Galaxy “play set”.
Of course, most gamers (and Guardians of the Galaxy fans) aren’t going to be content playing solely as Starlord and Gamora–they’re going to want to play as the rest of the team. And that’s where Disney makes the real bucks, as they’ve got three individual figures (at $14-$15 each) planned for release on 9/23/2014 alongside Disney Infinity 2.0 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Playset: the Disney Infinity Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Drax figures.
These non-poseable figures are not going to be for everybody, but I’m a big fan of the cartoon-ish, stylized versions of characters designed for the Disney Infinity franchise, so I’ll be welcoming these unique versions of some of my favorite superheroes with open arms.
Sadly, although Cosmo the Space Dog will play an integral role in the Guardians of the Galaxy Disney Infinity 2.0 levels, no Cosmo figure is planned at this time. Life is so unfair to that poor dog!
The Disney Infinity Guardians of the Galaxy figures and play set are all up for pre-order now, and are scheduled to be released on Tuesday, September 23, 2014. As a total Guardians of the Galaxy fanboy, these stylized figurines and the Guardians of the Galaxy Disney Infinity video game levels are the primary reason that I’ll be picking up Disney Infinity 2.0 later this month.
What do you think of the Disney Infinity Guardians of the Galaxy figures and play set, Marvel collectors? Will you be picking up these figures for the sake of themselves, to access the GOTG content in Disney Infinity 2.0, or not at all?
