Time is growing shorter and shorter for Hank Pym fans, as the odds of the Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man successfully funding diminish more and more with each passing hour. But today, Hasbro pulled out a treat to attempt to bolster Giant-Man figure orders: an all-new, never-before-seen classic Wasp Marvel Legends 2024 figure that will be the perfect complement to HasLab Giant-Man (if he funds)!
Ever since the very beginnings of the Giant-Man HasLab project campaign, I’ve been saying that I felt like Hank Pym isn’t the sort of universally popular character that could headline a successful crowdfunding project.
And with just about 4 days to go and over 3,500 backers still needed to hit even the base target with zero stretch goals included, things do indeed look bleak for ol’ Hank Pym.
Marvel Legends Giant-Man was seen by tent of thousands of fans at the Marvel booth at NYCC 2023 last week, which I think was a mild success since his backers grew from ~5,700 to ~6450 over the past week. Staff photographer Fermin S.III took a bunch of in-person photos of HasLab Giant-Man during the show, but even he said that while impressive, this wasn’t the sort of project he would back himself.
Complicating matters further for Ultron’s daddy, even if the number of backers miraculously doubled in the next 4 days, the project would still be short of the 14,000 backers necessary to fully unlock the alternate Zombie Giant-Man head (even though we know both heads were already baked into the price of the project to begin with.
I’ve seen quite a few folks say they’re backing because they want a Skrull and/or Zombie Giant Man for their display, and as those collectors realize the thresholds for those heads to be made are almost certain to never be reached, I expect to see the number of Giant-Man backers drop somewhat over the next few days. Making the army-builder tactic the central part of the stretch goals was likely a mistake.
But all is not bad for classic Avengers fans right now, as today Hasbro revealed a 2024 Marvel Legends Original Wasp figure that will be available next year, whether Giant-Man funds or fails! While her inclusion bundled with the figure might have aided Giant-Man in funding, it sure is nice knowing she’s not locked behind a pay window and is coming no matter what (unlike poor Mephisto and Madelyne Pryor)!
This Original Wasp Legends action figure is long overdue, and it’s a bit sad knowing how unlikely it is there will be a new Giant-Man to pair her with. Classic Wasp looks terrific! I never bought the Bowen Designs statue of her, so it will be nice to have her represented in my collection.
What are your thoughts on the Giant/-Man campaign, Marvel collectors? Do you think it will succeed, and are you backing? Also, who’s hyped for this upcoming Marvel Legends Original Wasp figure?
Well, the Giant Man figure did back What I find amazing is that in world that is saturated with so much misery, people on various forums would tie themselves in knots wrangling over the merits of what is essentially a toy. These things are meant to be enjoyable, not sources of contention. I’m going to enjoy my figure no end.
Well, contrary to my expectations, Giant-Man got fully backed with even a surplus of 3.000. The last time I looked was like 7 hours before the end and it still needed like 2.000+. I myself decided to put in my order like a week ago, never fully expecting this project to get backed anyway. You can imagine my surprise when I saw the email from Pulse telling me my payment method would be billed. That’s okay. I honestly wouldn’t have been hugely disappointed if he wouldn’t have made it. I Initially thought he was too expensive. But after thinking it over for a bit, I’ve to admit the price is not that exaggerated in today’s overpriced toy market. I still personally believe this should never have been a Haslab project and could have been regular retail. I also feel like they could at least have added Wasp to the base offering. But all things together, I’m glad he made it and that I decided to order one after all (still don’t understand though why they need like year to get this in our hands, but that’s a topic for another time).
