SDCC 2023 is just a week away, and many fans have been waiting with bated breath for the announcement of the Hasbro SDCC 2023 Marvel Legends exclusive(s) that will be made available during the show. Hasbro threw fans a plot twist, though, by first announcing a not-exactly-new Walmart exclusive 2-pack coming our way as part of the Walmart 2023 Summer Collector Con: Marvel Legends Morbius & Six-Armed Spider-Man!
Hasbro hit us with a curveball this week in the form of an exclusive Wal-Mart Marvel Legends two-pack that I suspect no one saw coming, bringing back some Spider-Man Legends 6” figures from years past: Six-Armed Spidey and classic Morbius!
At a glance, it might appear that this set is a pair of straight-up repacks—but is it really?
For the most part, the answer is yes—both action figures in this two-pack are predominantly repaints of prior releases. Morbius appears to be a straight-up repack of the 2016 release from the Absorbing Man Build-A-Figure series. That’s not entirely a bad thing, though—I gave that Morbius an ‘A’ in my toy review of it, and I needed a new one since the wonky black plastic on my 2016 one ripped off at the arm years back.
That said, an update to more modern articulation including pin-less joints would have been preferred (obviously). But if pinned joints are still to be used, utilizing them for all-black limbs likes Morbius’s is at least not as noticeable as when totally mismatched pins are used…
…as is unfortunately still the case on this pack’s Six-Arm Spider-Man. I hated this figure so much during its 2019 release in the Marvel Legends Kingpin series that I didn’t even review it, but at least Hasbro has improved it slightly since.
Whereas the original Six-Armed Spider-Man Legends figure had an entirely solid chest with no joint, Hasbro has updated the tooling to add an ab crunch (which I would dearly love to see reused for a new ML Doppelgänger Spider-Man)! That figure (shown above) felt a tad like a bootleg with the articulation-less chest, so the added joint is actually a pretty decent boon.
The figure unfortunately still sports unpainted web lining all over the costume and hideous bright red pins on the blue arms, though (if the official photos are correct), so it continues to look rather ridiculous. I’m a little shocked that Hasbro let the mismatched pins slide again, but I guess they only had so much budget and attention to spend on this sort of limited retailer exclusive item.
In addition, a pair of swap-out fists for Spidey will be included with the set that the original figure did not include. So that’s something, at least. Morbius will come with just one accessory: the same dual-color red and black cape as he had in 2016 (which is fine—it looked nice then and still will).
Marvel Legends Six Armed Spider-Man vs. Morbius will be available exclusively online during “Walmart Summer Collector Con 2023” starting July 18th. What are your thoughts on this $49.99 set, Marvel collectors? Who’s planning to pick up this very classic comic-based duo?
