While the Armored Thanos Series is technically the first Avengers Endgame Marvel Legends wave of Hasbro action figures, there’s not a whole lot going on so far as characters actually from the movie go. In fact, there’s just two single-packed figures from Endgame in the wave: Captain America and the subject of today’s review. Hawkeye’s absence was keenly felt in Infinity War, but now he’s back with an all-new persona: should you add the Marvel Legends Ronin figure to your collection? Here’s my review…
The Right:
And so, when the first Avengers Endgame trailer hit, there weren’t too many surprised hardcore fans when Black Widow spies the ninja-like Ronin pulling off his mask to reveal Clint Barton. Not only was Ronin confirmed—but he was also confirmed early, meaning we were likely to see merch for the character early on. And lo and behold—Hasbro had him in stores for launch day! Here’s how he turned out…
As is the case with virtually every new character Hasbro produces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, authentically recreating Ronin in 6” form required a ton of new tooling—and as usual, Hasbro shelled out for that tooling. If they had really wanted to, they probably could have found a way to cheese Ronin out of an old mold somehow—but they did not. Thumbs up.
It can be tough to make out all the sculpting detail on this ML Ronin action figure from a distance, but he’s covered in textures and little details up-close. From the criss-crossing pattern on his knee armor to the woven-like pattern on his shoulders and back, I’m really pleased with the level sculpting detail that went into this movie figure.
The paint deco on this Ronin figure is also nicely applied, and the gold paint apps definitely pop as a contrast to the predominant black on the rest of the costume. The tunic is missing gold lining at the bottom unfortunately, but for the most part the paint is otherwise excellent.
Along with the left arm of the Armored Thanos Build-A-Figure (complete with Infinity Gauntlet), we get three accessories for the Marvel Legends Endgame Ronin figure: two swords (of different lengths!) and an alternate left hand with throwing stars effect attached.
Few things make me smile as much as well-executed effects pieces, so I had a big dopey grin on my face when I attached the shuriken-throwing hand to Ronin. It’s not really practical for most poses or display setups, but I love it it quite a bit nonetheless. In fact, it’s probably my favorite thing about the whole figure.
Ronin’s left hand was a little stiff, so I had to heat it up with some hot water to get either sword into his grip, but once there the swords fit nice and tight. I dig that Hasbro gave us a longsword and a shortsword, and I appreciate that the hilts themselves are painted (even if there’s no paint deco on the blades themselves).
I had intended to complain about Ronin’s tunic being too bulky of an add-on piece, but looking at the Hot Toys and Iron Studios designs for Ronin, the tunic actually looks like it’s been sized rather perfectly.
The tunic unfortunately blocks any kind of ab crunch articulation (a big loss on a ninja), but it’s a good-looking costume piece nonetheless.
There’s also a sheath that goes around and latches onto Ronin’s back, and which fits the swords snugly. I appreciate the paint detail on the sheath strap a lot.
Articulation-wise, Hawkeye/Ronin has a bit less flexibility than I’d like, but he’s still got a decent amount of super-articulation, including: ball-hinge head and shoulders; swivel biceps/thighs/waist; double-hinge knees and elbows; hinged ankles with rockers; and swivel-hinge wrists. Butterfly shoulders, swivel calves/boots and some sort of ab crunch are all notable omissions. He poses well, but not necessarily in every way you’d envision.
The Wrong:
If Hasbro didn’t have a Clint Barton head approved or ready to go it would be one thing, but it’s actually already on store shelves in the Target Exclusive two-pack, so it really seems like Hasbro just didn’t want to include the unmasked head here. Weak.
In addition, as you may have noticed, Ronin’s hood is removed for the majority of my photos. The hood on this figure really irritates me. It’s a separate piece from everything else that can’t “snap” into place in any way, so it really only sits well when Ronin is looking straight forward. Otherwise it falls off or gets pushed out of place easily, and in many poses it just doesn’t look right. A permanently hooded head would have made more sense and worked much better here.
Overall: Hasbro has done an overall solid job with this Ronin Marvel Legends figure, although there’s a few things that hold it back from being truly outstanding. The lack of an unmasked head as a pack-in is pretty baffling, and I don’t like the awkwardness of the removable hood and the missing gold paint at the bottom of the tunic.
All that said, Hasbro has given us a movie figure that’s loaded with new tooling and includes an ultra-cool shuriken-throwing effects hand, which scores major points in my book. I don’t think the Endgame Legends Ronin figure is quite perfect, but I do think it’s a nice figure that’s easily the best of the three movie figures in Endgame Marvel Legends Wave 1.
The hood is meant to be the other way around.
It got mixed up in some of my photos because it kept falling off. Ha.
Regardless, it’s as loose and wobbly regardless of which way it’s put on him. Sigh.
Came here to point out the same detail. Mine actually slips quite satisfactorily under my Ronin’s collar.
With that little window of eyes they gave us, I somehow imagine Jeremy Renner’s likeness is under there. The little they included seems to look pretty accurate. It is so weird they didn’t include an alternate head though. I’d rather that than the effects piece hand.
Not including the unmasked head makes perfect sense to me. If you’re a movie figure collector (like me), you’re bound to buy the Target 2-pack as it’s intentioned: buying two 2-packs making Hawkeye, Black Widow, Antman/Ironman and Nebula, you’re bound to have an extra Clint Barton head and Bow left for your Ronin. So why would they need to give you another extra head?!?
And in case anyone wonder, yes the Clint Barton head from the Target 2-pack fits perfectly on Ronin.
I asked myself why did the Target 2-pack come with an odd number (3) of heads? So along that line of thought, it’s clear to me that that Hasbro wants you to buy two sets of Target 2-pack, and a case of the Avenger wave so you can also swap out the head of the extra Cap figure from the wave with the Iron Man head from the 2-pack.
That was my thought as well. I did get two of the Target 2-Packs for that very reason, and the Jeremy Renner head looks fantastic on the Ronin figure.
Again, with this series, I have no attachment to Ronin. In fact, I knew nothing about this character, and the name confused me with Ronan. I just want Ebony Maw, but this Ronin figure just shows how much Hasbro needs to make these 6″ figures in this style for G.I.Joe. I’d be all over it.
Am I weird that I almost would have preferred they kitbashed one of the standard bodies for this? The figure looks….bulky. Like, “I’m all decked out to deliver mail in the dead of winter with flair, but don’t ask me to put my arms at my sides” bulky. I get that Barton is sporting these togs for a rainy night in Tokyo but he looks less ninja than snowmobiler to me.
I’ve seen a lot of shots with the tunic removed and the fig looks even better as a generic background ninja!
I was just coming in here to post this. The tunic has 2 “hidden” tabs that pop out, pop his head off, pull up and sideways, slides right off.
And it wasn’t mentioned, but the sheath’s strap also has a tab that pops out for easy removal, with 4 holes underneath that make it very adjustable.
I almost wanna get a second one to paint him all black. The figure makes a helluva ninja. Only complaint I have is, if you want the swords to fit in the sheath together without bending the hell out of them, you have to put one in each end, i.e. the longer sword in the “top” and the smaller in through the “bottom”. And even then, they get bent a bit. Kind of frustrating that, with all the sword sheathes they’ve done, they couldn’t have put in two separate holes and made it a little wider to accommodate, but it’s still a MASSIVELY awesome-looking figure.
Also has the absolutely gummiest knees ever, and mine had the loosest ankle rockers I’ve seen so far- gonna have to dab on some Pledge Revive It floor gloss to fix ’em- but trying to move the top of the double knee joint feels like the knee section is just gonna rip. Farg.
The gummy tough knees are due to overly large ratchet tabs in the knee joints. Take a hair dryer or boil water and allow the knees to get real hot and rubbery, pop out the pegs, then use an exacto to shorten the tabs on the top and bottom of the knee joint, and put ’em back together. It’s even simpler than it sounds and works wonders. I saw someone mention the youtube videos about the simple mods that make this figure 10x better than he is out of the box below. I highly recommend checking it out if you are willing to do some simple maneuvers to drastically improve this figure.
Pass for me at the moment. As someone who doesn’t plan to get the 2-pack, throwing an unmasked Renner head in here would have gone a long way towards convincing me to get him but oh well. Seems like he’s a pretty hot seller though.
I was never a fan of Hawkeye-as-Ronin in the comics (altho didn’t it turn out to be Echo?.. i can’t remember and don’t want to revisit that storyline) so marvel has its work cut out for it to get me to buy this figure, i may change my mind after seeing him in the movie (but my guess is that he barely wears this costume before getting into quantum suit)
You should at least consider buying the Target 2-packs in the meantime since Target has a generous 90-day return policy on unopened items. That should give you enough time to decide.
“The tunic unfortunately blocks any kind of ab crunch articulation (a big loss on a ninja), but it’s a good-looking costume piece nonetheless.”
This can be easily resolved by cutting the tunic into two pieces. The cut can be made just above the belt. There’s a YouTube video that shows how you make this simple cut, as well as other customizations.
Yep, did all the mods in the video except the ninja star hand customization, which I will probably do when I get a second figure. Thanks for the heads up, really took the figure to the next level.
Ok. I just got mine today, and I have to say, this is way cooler in hand than it seems in online photos. I was just getting him for the BAF piece, but I’m really happy with this figure. Details galore. Still want that unmasked head (no, I’m not buying the two-pack), but otherwise, this is surprisingly better than I expected.
