I thought that we were done with Marvel SDCC 2013 exclusive announcements for the week, but clearly Diamond Select Toys had other ideas! There’s not usually a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive Marvel Select action figure, so I wasn’t expecting to see a SDCC Marvel Select Exclusive–and there’s not one. What we do always get like clockwork for Comic-Con season is exclusive Marvel Minimates, though–and the first such set for this year has been revealed: the SDCC 2013 Exclusive Wolverine Saga Minimates box set!
A Wolverine in Space Suit Minimate is sort of interesting–I had the 1990’s Toybiz X-Men Wolverine Spacesuit figure that shelf-warmed for years, and have fond memories of it (not the shelf-warming part).
Logan-san depicts Wolverine from when he tried to live peacefully in Japan… not really my thing, but I know there are loads of X-Men comic book fans out there who love that era of Wolverine’s life.
At first I thought that the inclusion of another Ultimate Wolverine Minimate was kind of a “blah” reveal. After all, Diamond Select Toys did an Ultimate Wolverine Minimates figure years ago that’s still easily obtainable for about 3 bucks. But then I looked at that original Ultimate Wolverine figure and, well… yeah. He needed an update.
Finally, Symbiote Wolverine. I’ll be honest–I didn’t know this was a real thing. I thought Art Asylum made it up. But it turns out it happened in a Brian Michael Bendis Avengers comic book, and is most famously illustrated on the cover of New Avengers #35. This is probably the most obscure figure in this pack, but easily the most visually compelling.
It’s very unlikely that this is the only Marvel Minimates exclusive set for San Diego Comic-Con 2013. I would be extremely surprised if another retailer (likely Action Figure Express) doesn’t offer another Marvel Minimates SDCC exclusive at the show.
The SDCC 2013 Minimates Wolverine Saga set is limited to 3000 produced (which, honestly, should be plenty) and will be available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con International next month.
