It seems like hardly a week goes by when there’s not some new high-end Marvel Statue to talk about that costs a half a grand (or more!). But fear not, collectors who love statues but don’t love spending exorbitant amounts of cash on them: Diamond Select Toys has you covered with their reasonably-priced resin and PVC statue lines. And their latest release just might be their best one to-date: the 16” Marvel Premier Collection Cable Statue is finally beginning to ship out!
While Deadpool has been shown before in an official photo online and Cable has been announced in writing, I was completely taken aback by just how beautiful the pair—and especially Cable—were in-person.
Now that almost a year has passed and Marvel Premier Collection Cable has officially gone through production and arrived on my shelf, do I still think he’s awesome…? Hell yeah!
Diamond Select Toys has outdone themselves with this Cable Premier Collection Statue. It’s a tight race, but I really think it edges out Venom and even Moon Knight as the coolest piece in the line. The DST Moon Knight I reviewed a few months back is amazing—but it doesn’t quite have the same presence in a room that this Cable does.
Just like the olden days when Bowen Designs was king, Cable comes packaged in a moderately-sized art box that didn’t give me a heart attack upon seeing the size of.
I appreciate the character bio and information on the back of the box—again, just like the Bowen Designs golden age. This is rather appropriate, as this Diamond Select Premier Collection line seems to be the successor in both size and value to Bowen. (Man, I miss Bowen Designs.)
There’s a nice authenticity card included in the box (for those who care about such things—mine is just going back in the box forever). Each one is numbered to correspond which Cable figure yours is in the 3000 piece edition size.
Inside of the box, Cable comes in the styrofoam as one solid piece with the base attached. No put-together model kit here!
This also ain’t no PVC statue—this piece has a good amount of heft to it, weighing an impressive nearly six pounds for a resin statue of this scale.
Not every Marvel Premier Collection Statue Diamond Select has released thus far has had impeccable paint apps, so I had some trepidations that might be the case here. It’s not—there’s tons of paint shading and wash all over this piece, and Cable looks as a grim and gritty as he should.
The real star of this piece is the design. With one leg raised powerfully, a large gun sheathed on his back, a deadly knife in one hand and a BFG in the other, it’s evident at a glance that this is one bad dude you don’t wanna eff with.
The BFG actually has a surprising amount of detailing and paint deco on it. It also increases the height of the statue from 12” to 16”, giving the piece a real boost in size.
The base is just technological chunks of… something, but it does its job of looking slick and not distracting from the main Cable figure well. This will look really good next to Deadpool’s complementary base once my Deadpool statue arrives.
If there’s one thing about the statue I’m not totally in love with (but still think is pretty sweet), it’s the Cable head sculpt. From profile views from the side, it looks near-perfect to me. From head-on… the head seems like it might be a little bit narrow.
Cable has appeared in literally thousands of comic books now, so I’m sure there are some appearance where his face looks really similar to the one on this statue—but this isn’t quite the Cable likeness I visualize in my mind’s eye. It’s really good (especially for this scale)—but it’s not quite there.
Even so, I think this Cable is an outstanding statue overall that’s certain to follow Venom and Moon Knight to quick sold-out and expensive status. The amount of detail and quality in a statue of this size for 150 bucks or cheaper is unparalleled across the statue industry.
Overall: I loved the crap out of this Marvel Premiere Collection Cable Statue when Diamond Select Toys debuted it at NYCC 2017, and I love it 97% as much now as I did then. The face on Cable isn’t perfectly perfect, but everything else about this statue is. The level of quality that Diamond Select is reaching with a 1:6 resin statue line with an MSRP of just 150 bucks is incredible. EE has a Premier Collection Cable restock coming in for $135 shipped—if you want this one, get this statue before it sells out and doubles (or more) in price.
Thanks Dabid – you posted about this and the tri-fecta it makes with DeadPool & Domino. Ordered from EE and just got Cable in, #133. My first large and limited statue and very, very happy. The details and paint highlights are excellent. Now looking for DP soon and Domino around Xmas. Grade A, agreed ^_~ HavaTaco -J
Great statue indeed and wonderful value for your money. It’s next to my Bowen and Kotobukiya versions and it certainly doesn’t feel like the lesser one out of the three. I was also pleasantly surprised by the balance of the statue, even with the huge gun. Having Deadpool as well, I like how it forms a nice little set, even though it’s not mandatory. I might just pre-order Domino as well in order to complete the set. 🙂 Kudos to Diamond for continuing this great and very affordable series. In an age where 700 bucks seems common for a statue, these are a welcome change. I don’t feel the need to buy every single one of them, but I’ll definitely try to purchase the ones I like.
