This week has been perhaps the busiest and the most loaded-down with hotly-anticipated new Marvel you announcements of any week I can recall. But while the past days have been absolutely bursting with hugely-popular new collectibles, one item in particular seems to be getting a bad rap and loads of criticism all-around. The Marvel Select Avengers Age of Ultron Hulk has been up for order for a while, but was only revealed this week. Is this upcoming figure really worth all the negativity being directed at it?

One of the things about Marvel Select that I most dearly love is that Diamond Select Toys regularly reissues old figures from the line–even ones a decade old–in order to meet demand and keep aftermarket prices down. Keeping home runs like Marvel Select Deadpool, Gambit, Juggernaut and so forth in circulation makes Marvel Select one of the most “new collector friendly” companies in the land.

But some figures can’t be reissued–and exact reissues of movie Marvel Select figures are never allowed. It’s for this reason that many movie Marvel Select action figures–including Hawkeye, The Wolverine Logan, Loki and more–sell for triple or quadruple their original price-point on the aftermarket. And unfortunately, many collectors simply can’t afford those kind of prices on figures that have been sold out for a few years.

But wait–! Sometimes there is a loophole. And that loophole is when a past movie Marvel Select figure can be repainted and/or retooled for a new movie. It’s because of this loophole that Diamond Select Toys are able to offer the Avengers Age of Ultron Marvel Select Thor (who is a repaint of the Thor: The Dark World Marvel Select Thor), and now this previously sold-out Marvel Select movie Hulk figure!

When DST announced the Marvel Select Age of Ultron Hulk last year, the solicitation text read that “DST is revisiting their award-winning action figure from the first Avengers movie with all-new sculpted details“. And that is what Diamond Select Toys has given us here–the old Avengers Hulk Marvel Select figure, but with new legs wearing different (non-tattered) pants.

Considering how well-received Marvel Select reissues of in-demand characters are, I actually thought fans might be pleased that they’d have another shot at an older Hulk figure with some updated sculpting. As it turns out, though, a number of vocal collectors have been pretty ticked-off about this release, as it counts toward the nine non-exclusive Marvel Select figures that can be released each year.

Personally, I think it’s fantastic that Diamond Select has found a way to get more Hulks out there into the loving arms of collectors who’ve been wanting one but are unable to afford aftermarket prices. If DST could have done a movie Hulkbuster Iron Man Marvel Select figure, I’m sure they would have loved to have done one (and I would have loved to have bought it)–but it just wasn’t in the cards. At least thousands of collectors will now be able to get a Hulk figure that would have otherwise never been available again.

The Marvel Select Hulk Avengers Age of Ultron figure is now available for order, and is scheduled to be released in May 2015. Given the track record of Marvel Select movie figures selling out and the insane hype surrounding the May release of Age of Ultron, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Hulk is sold out via online retailers before he ever arrives in stores at all.
