Marvel Select Amazing Spider-Man 2 Figure Confirmed; No Villains?

Whenever Art Asylum posts a new Marvel-centric ASK DST Q&A, it’s one of the high points of each month for me (no, really–my life is pretty dull). Diamond Select Toys is one of the most open and fan-friendly toy companies out there, and they go out of their way to answer each and every question collectors ask of them. There’s almost always at least some worthwhile tidbit contained within the Q&A, and in the latest one, we finally got confirmation of a Marvel Select Amazing Spider-Man 2 figure–as well as confirmation of who won’t be getting a Marvel Select action figure…

Seeing as how Diamond Select Toys has produced Marvel Select movie figures for almost every Marvel movie released since Iron Man (poor X-Men: First Class), most fans have been considering it to be a sure thing that we would be getting Amazing Spider-Man 2 Marvel Select Electro and Spider-Man figures. Well, turns out that that assumption is only half-right.

In Ask DST #239, posted last week on the Art Asylum website, Alan M. wrote in and asked “What are the chances of getting a marvel select The Amazing Spider-man 2 movie spidey figure? and maybe a movie electro?”

The official response from DSTChuck was: “We ARE doing a Spidey from ASM2, but we were not able to do an Electro – sorry.”

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Electro PosterBy the way that Chuck said that DST wasn’t “able to do an Electro”, it sounds like the reference materials were not available in time for Diamond Select Toys to develop an Electro figure. With that being the case, it is very likely that Marvel Select Amazing Spider-Man 2 Rhino and Green Goblin figures are also off the table, as those characters’ designs were kept top-secret far longer than Electro’s.

Thus, while it’s still unconfirmed at this point (and likely will be until the 2014 Toy Fair next month), it seems that the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Marvel Select figures line is going to end up being limited to either just Spidey himself, or perhaps Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy figures (a la the recently-released Marvel Select Thor and Jane Foster figures).

If there are in fact no Marvel Select villains figures released for ASM2, would you be happy with just a Marvel Select Amazing Spider-Man 2 Spider-Man figure being released, Marvel collectors? Or are you hoping for a Marvel Select Gwen Stacy or Peter Parker figure as well?

  1. man.. why is it that the bad guys almost always get shafted when it comes to the toys..

    iron man 2 whiplash didn’t hit stores until after the dvd release.. and there was never an armored version of him produced.. and neither of them were released as 6″ figures either.

    iron man 3.. well, the 3.75″ figures sucked all the way around.. but we didn’t get the mandarin, killian, or any of the extremis people in the legends line.. hell only TWO suits from the movie made it into the legends line which RIDICULOUS, out of all of those AWESOME armors.. they gave us TWO.. hell, they didn’t even give us the mark 7.

    thor .. they produced a king laufy figure.. but you’ll only be able to find that in stores like 5 below.

    thor two.. the MAIN villain maleketh didn’t get a toy.. at least not yet.. i haven’t seen any news for a second wave of that line.. it’s a shame, the line looked promising and sold well while it was in stores (and by stores i mean TRU) and it doesn’t look like DST is going to give us any marvel select bad guys either.

    transformers DOTM.. sure we got a voyager megatron.. but no leader.. it was the first time in the live action films that megatron had an earth based alt mode, yet no leader figure.

    the lines that looks like they’re giving bad guys justice are the captain america and spider man legends line.
