Diamond Select Toys generally launches only a few more than a dozen new Marvel Select figures each year, but we’ve become quite used to them maximizing that potential and making every release count. This week, two new figures launched with varying degrees of success buzz-wise: the all-new Marvel Select Super Skrull is now up for order, as well as the Disney Exclusive Miles Morales and Spider-Ham!
It doesn’t happen often these days, but this week we’re actually getting not one, but TWO need Marvel Select figures launched—and better still, both are brand-new characters never before released by Diamond Select Toys!
The headliner is a shocking surprise character never before made as an articulated action figure by any company in the world: the Illuminati Super Skrull from Secret Invasion with the powers of Iron Man, Black Bolt, Charles Xavier and the rest of the Illuminati!
While we’ve seen numerous action figures and even a few statues of the Fantastic Four-powered Super Skrull since the Toybiz days of the 90s, I am genuinely stunned to see this prominent “event” villain being covered by DST before Hasbro takes a crack at him (probably because Hasbro didn’t want to invest in the expensive unique tooling for this dude).
The alternate head sculpt of Super Skrull Select doing a Black Bolt sonic scream is downright incredible, as are tons of other details on this toy. Though he was only unveiled a few days ago, there’s already a lot of positive hype and goodwill from fans for this figure. Diamond Select may have another hit on their hands here.
The other new Marvel Select item released this week has been received, uh… “less favorably”: a Shop Disney/Disney Store Exclusive Miles MoralesSpider-Man & Spider-Ham two-pack.
Images of this duo first leaked the week before San Diego Comic Con 2022–to an instant cacophony of criticism from collectors due to the wild proportions on the Miles Morales action figure, whose shoulders, waist and hips look startlingly similar in width. His cut torso is also… a little jarring.
Truthfully, I also think the style and proportions of Miles look rather wonky, but I don’t mind this release as a whole outside of Miles (unfortunately, the main portion of the release itself).
The web accessories and Spider-Ham (superior to any Hasbro has done) are all nice, though the half-unmasked Miles Morales head is almost scandalous. I really want to love this because the character of Miles is such a great one, but this is one of my least favorite new Marvel Select action figures in a long, long time, alas.
The Marvel Select Super Skrull is up for pre-orders now online, and has a fair chance of selling out quickly during pre-sales if some other recent Marvel Select figures are any indication. Miles and Spider-Ham are in Disney Stores now and also available on ShopDisney, though I haven’t heard many fans say they’re picking the pair up just yet.
What do you think of the newest DST figures on the block, Marvel collectors? Were you as shocked as me to see the Illluminati Super Skrull, and will you be grabbing one? What are your opinions on the controversial new Miles Morales and Peter Porker set as well?
