2021 has been a notably slow year for Marvel Select figure collectors, with just a handful of new Diamond Select Toys Marvel figure releases hitting shelves and even fewer new figures being solicited for specialty retailers. But the drought has been punctuated over the last couple weeks, as a trio of comics-based figures have begun to arrive! Shipping soon from online retailers, the Marvel Select Titanium Man, Human Torch and Silver Centurion Iron Man figures have begun hitting some comic shops and are looking full-on fantastic!
Fans of the Diamond Select Toys Marvel Select figures series are justifiably feeling a little anxious this year, as there’s been a grand total of one new figure announced for the regular lineup this year (outside of Disney Store exclusives), the Marvel Select WandaVision Scarlet Witch figure that’s expected to arrive next month (whether or not that actually transpires with the industry-wide shipping challenges going on right now, we will see).
But while DST fans wait on pins and needles to see the future of the series (hopefully at New York Comic Con 2021 in just under a month!), the last three currently-revealed Marvel Select comics-based figures quietly began shuffling into specialty stores!
First up, and probably the most exciting for Hasbro Marvel Legends figure collectors, is the 9.5” Marvel Select Titanium Man figure (which is still available for MSRP on Entertainment Earth, but already being scalped for $45 plus shipping on Amazon—ouch).
This is the classic Titanium Man design from the comics, complete with an interchangeable Boris Bullski (I had to stop my brain from auto-piloting and typing Bullshi*) head. I seriously doubt anyone is ever going to display this figure with the Boris Bullski portrait, but it’s good of Diamond Select Toys to increase it nonetheless, since this is a character version that definitely ain’t getting another figure anytime soon (if ever).
With a 100% uniquely tooled sculpt and a size that makes him look formidable against both Marvel Select and Marvel Legends figures, this is certainly going to be a hit for DST that will escalate on the aftermarket like their Destroyer Odin figure (which rakes in close to 100 bucks these days).
We are not gonna see a better Titanium Man than this—grab him now while he’s retail-priced if you care about this classic Iron Man villain at all.
The just-released (and I mean just-released like a few days ago) Marvel Select Human Torch figure exceeds my expectations for it, but I’m not sold yet that it is the definitive figure of flame-on Johnny Storm.
The alternate Original Human Torch Jim Hammond head is a real treat—and the generous helping of fire effects pieces alone may make this worth the pickup—but I don’t like the fiery pieces that attach to the chest at all, and I think I would prefer the 6” Retro Marvel Legends Human Torch coming in a few months to a 7” version that will likely never have a Reed and Sue in a matching scale.
Finally, we’ve got the Marvel Select Silver Centurion Iron Man figure—which I was lukewarm on when it was announced out of nowhere, but turns out to be loads of classic comic-based fun!
To read about the accessories DST planned to include for this Iron Man was one thing, but actually seeing the treasure trove of them in the package is another. 7 effects pieces with 4 color schemes, a wacky retro alternate head, a very classic comic-styled Tony Stark head… everything you could reasonably ask for for this Iron Man armor permutation.
Hasbro and Toybiz have done some okay Iron Man figures over the years, but this puts every other comic-styled Silver Centurion we’ve ever seen to absolute shame. This is full of win and a figure version I hope turns out to be a mega-hit for DST.
The Marvel Select Human Torch, Titanium Man and Silver Centurion Iron Man figure are shipping soon from specialty retailers, although some comic stores have already received them. These are three wins for Diamond Select Toys, and I legit see all three being sold out of stores in a flash. It’s a real shame no further comic book Select figures have been announced yet!
Anyone see it pick up this new Marvel Select figures trio themselves? If so, what do you think of the triumvirate? Are these some of DST’s best work, and who do you hope to see join the long-running lineup in the coming months and years?
These look really awesome. Titanium man has been on my list for a long time.
