We’re just about two weeks to the minute away from the hotly-awaited Captain Marvel movie hitting theaters, and so the time was ripe over the weekend for Diamond Select Toys to finally reveal their first non-Minimates Captain Marvel products at New York Toy Fair 2019! The Marvel Select Captain Marvel that went up for PO earlier this winter proudly debuted, as did a previously unannounced Marvel Gallery PVC statue…
Not only did DST play their whole hand and drop the curtain entirely on their Captain Marvel Select figure, but we even got our first look at a Gallery Statue that should be solicited pretty soon!
First, the Select. Rarely does Diamond Select Toys disappoint when it comes to MCU Select figures (although Drax was a real bummer, IMO), and I think their first 7” Carol Danvers figure is another hit… as long as collectors are on-board with what the figure is (and isn’t).
The solicitation for this Marvel Select Captain Marvel movie figure listed it as being in the green Starforce costume, and that’s exactly what we get here. No unmasked head was advertised in the solicit, so it also shouldn’t surprise anyone that there’s not one of those. I know both those facts will disappoint some folks, but this figure is what it is.
But while many fans are likely itching for a red and blue costumed Carol Danvers with Brie Larson ahead, the figure we do get here (which doesn’t have either of those things) is still pretty great. While the neutral expression is a bit blah, the glossy paints used really shine and the accessories we get are exquisite.
Like most other companies, DST has their own Goose the Cat figure ready to fly. I would say this one trumps the Hasbro Legends version, but is behind Mezco’s and not even on the same plane of existence as the glorious Hot Toys Goose cat.
Along with Carol’s cat, you also get a diorama-style terrain base, a normal energy blast effects piece, and a huge energy effects piece beam that will come with its own clear support stand. The two Carols Hasbro released this year both lacked effects, so I’m hyped for these.
Meanwhile, we also got the announcement and reveal of the PVC Captain Marvel Gallery Statue at NY Toy Fair 2019—again wearing the green Starforce costume and mask. No unmasked variant could be announced at the show, but is possible down the road.
I consider the DST Gallery PVC Figures to be the best value in all of Statue collecting with their insanely low sub-$50 MSRP, and I think this is another piece that’s full of win.
I love how aggressive and angry Carol looks in this statue, and the dynamic pose of this piece with Captain Marvel rushing forward while punching and crushing a missile really works for me. This is how you do an action-packed statue at a budget price!
The Marvel Select Captain Marvel figure is currently up for order online and scheduled to ship Summer 2019, with the Marvel Gallery Statue expected to go up for sale within the next 1-2 months. As these are movie products, the license is only for one year for these figures—and there’s usually only one production run—so make sure to lock in early if you want one.
Has Diamond Select clenched some of your future dollars with their Carol Danvers Gallery and Select Figures, or have they failed to impress you with their latest MCU products, Marvel collectors? If you’re not interested in these items because of the Starforce costume, would you be more interested when and if there are red/blue unmasked versions?
Nah. I would want the red and blue and unmasked head.
I’ll wait for the red and blue with umasked head version of both of these as well. I’m sure it’ll be an exclusive of some kind, that’s the M.O. of Diamond Select items.
Bring on the Red and Blue!
