NYCC 2015: Comicave Studios Super Alloy Iron Man Figures!

If there was one display at New York Comic Con 2015 last week that really made me do a double-take and wonder if my fever was higher than I’d thought, it was the Comicave Studios booth. Because Comicave had products at NYCC not only on display–but for sale at the show–that I thought would never see the light of day: the 1/4 and 1/12 Super Alloy Iron Man figures live again!

NYCC 2015 Super Alloy Iron Man Play Imaginative Figures

Way back in summer 2013 (as in, 2+ years ago), there was a little company called Play Imaginative that had big dreams. Unfortunately, their dreams were far bigger than their productivity, and after showing off–and taking people’s money for–nearly 100 Iron Man die-cast figures at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 and New York Comic-Con 2013, Play Imaginative failed to bring almost any of these die-cast figures to the market. Alas.

But it appears that not all hope is lost, as little-known company Comicave Studios has picked up the remnants of the Play Imaginative Iron Man line and is actually bringing some of those figures out at retail!

Comicave Studios NYCC 2015 Iron Man Die-Cast FiguresAt New York Comic-Con 2015, the following Super Alloy Iron Man figures were on-display:

  • 1/12 Iron Man Mark XLII (6″)
  • 1/12 Iron Patriot (6″)
  • 1/12 Shotgun Iron Man (6″)
  • 1/12 Shades Iron Man (6″)
  • 1/12 Igor Iron Man (8.5″)
  • 1/4 Iron Patriot (18″)
  • 1/4 War Machine Mark II (18″)

Play Imaginative Iron Man Mark 42 Figure NYCC 2015The Iron Man Mark XLII and War Machine/Iron Patriot figures bear the “Play Imaginative” logos on their packaging, whereas the Igor and Iron Man Shotgun figures (and all future released figures) are sporting the “Comicave Studios” logo. The figures will be distributed in the United States via Bluefin Distribution (the popular distributors of the Bandai Tamashii Nations lines).

Super Alloy Iron Man Shotgun FigureThe one figure that was on display at NYCC 2015 that I would have bought from Comicave was also the figure that wasn’t available for purchase yet: the Super Alloy Shades Iron Man.

Shades Iron Man Super Alloy Figure Comicave Studios

While the Iron Man Shades armor is a repaint of the Shotgun armor, it’s camouflage paint scheme makes it unique among all the other Iron Man armors out there. In addition, this is one of the remaining armors that haven’t been released by Hot Toys–or any other collectibles company–in any form.

Seeing as how it’s a repaint of a mold Comicave has already invested in the tooling for, though, I’d happily bet money we’ll be seeing this 6″ Shades Iron Man up for sale someday soon!

Igor Iron Man Super Alloy Figure Comicave StudiosI wouldn’t bet on most of these figures ever hitting an actual physical retail store, but most of the Iron Man Super Alloy figures that are actually being produced are available for order online now. Given how far removed we are from Iron Man 3 and how long the production on these figures has taken, it’s entirely possible that the run size of these is going to be very small. Iron Man Mark XLII is already sold-out, but most of the others are still available.

Now that some of them are finally available, do you have any interest in these 75% die-cast Iron Man action figures, Marvel collectors? Or are Comicave Studios’ efforts with this line too little, too late as far as you’re concerned?

  1. I just received the Iron Patriot 1/12th scale . I must say I thought the line was dead then BBTS charged my card I was in shock I must admit . I would like to see some of the other one’s out for sale 1/4scale they had a long list of Ironman armors . It will be interesting to see which one’s make it out . You had a great point Ironman 3 is long past so most collectors have moved on me I am still intrested in this line . We will see .

    • I mean, Play Imaginative made a prototype die-cast 6″ Starboost, so at least one exists somewhere in the world. If that makes you feel any better? 😉

Sadly, since that armor can’t be repainted, I sort of doubt Comicave will ever pay for the tooling for it…

      • It is literally THE coolest Iron Man armor ever made, and yet it simply doesn’t exist in the most standard.
Or barely at all in ANY scale….

        It’s frustrating.

        • Agreed bro that for me starboost are the coolest among all but i guessed just because you’re the coolest doesn’t make u the most popular. If it had more screen time & plays bigger roles in the story, i bet all the toy makers would produce him.

  2. First, thanks for posting this. I’ve seen people post the the King Arts 1/9 figures are like mini Hot Toys. How would you compare the quality to King Arts and Hot Toys?

  3. I heard about these super alloy making their debut during 2013, it was quite a hyped back then as they’re showing off their prototypes ironman other than hot toys.Furthermore they’re offering something that’s hot toys isn’t like 6″ ironman which really we have no other choice other than marvel legend & occasionally sh figuarts. They had potential, then news came that they delayed their production.
