My apologies for the large gap in New York Comic Con coverage! I had braces put in this week, and what I thought was going to be a minor irritant ended up sidelining me for days. Alas. But I’m back now, and looking to fill in the NYCC blanks with the last of the Marvel Legends Hasbro brought along to the show: the previously-announced 2019 Marvel Legends Spider-Man Kingpin Series!
While the figures displayed at the event had been shown at SDCC 2018, this was my first chance to pose and touch them to my heart’s content. Let’s take a look…
The high point of this wave—by a landslide—is the Marvel Legends Kingpin Build-A-Figure.
Kingpin’s bulky body proportions are dead-on perfect for the character, and his diamond-topped cane is stellar. This body also works shockingly well with the upcoming Shadow King head coming with Professor X.
While I really dig the stoic head on this Kingpin BAF, the open-mouthed, angry head with raised eyebrows is perfect for an infuriated Wilson Fisk. While I wanted a Netflix Kingpin more, there’s no faulting the excellence of this comic-based Kingpin figure.
The rest of this wave… is a little bit less desirable. Marvel Legends Black Cat makes a return in her modern Marvel NOW costume, but this costume is far from popular with mainstream fans.
Sad as it may be, the yellow cat-eyes costume has just never caught on fandom. Black Cat merch always seems to sell well, but I have a bunch this won’t be as much a hot-ticket item as we’re used to.
Felicia Hardy isn’t coming alone, though—her costar from the now-cancelled “Silver & Black” movie is also in the wave: Marvel Legends Silver Sable!
Hasbro has never tackled Silver Sable before, but she has been released as a Minimate, a HeroClix figurine and a Toybiz figure in the past.
I legit can’t remember the last time I read a great (or good) Silver Sable story, but I am looking forward to a super-articulated Legends figure of her.
Not at the Hasbro Press Event, but announced during a New York Comic Con livestream, it’s Marvel Legends Night Thrasher! I was shocked to see the tumbleweeds rolling past hype-wise when this figure was announced, as I’ve got great memories of Night Thrasher from the original New Warriors series. He looks terrific, though I fear he’s destined to peg-warm.
From Dan Slott’s “Go Down Swinging” final arc of Amazing Spider-Man, we’ve got Marvel Legends Red Goblin and Modern Symbiote Spider-Man.
While I’m a hardcore Black Costume Spider-Man fan, this new stylized Symbiote Spidey is really leaving me cold.
I feel like this particular costume looks more silly on Peter Parker than it does badass. I’ll buy it—because I’m not going to do without that Kingpin Build-A-Figure—but this is one of the lesser-appealing Spidey variants in quite some time.
Red Goblin is a bit more tantalizing to me. I mean, hey—it’s Norman Osborn with the Carnage symbiote. What’s not to love, right?
In person, I don’t especially like the way that the Red Goblin “mask” is designed to show the human head underneath, unfortunately.
I asked the Hasbro team if the development work to put a large tail on Red Goblin could be carried over to a Squirrel Girl, but the team played coy with their answer. Keep dreaming, Doreen fans!
Finally, we’ve got the “Into the Spider-Verse” Marvel Legends two-pack of Miles Morales Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen. This set has actually appeared already in some parts of the world, but I don’t believe it’s been spotted anywhere in the United States yet.
This set is a 100% repaint, but is fine for those who missed the first releases of Spider-Gwen and Miles. I think the Gwen Stacy head is still not lively and attractive enough, but otherwise this duo is “fine”. Nothing for those who have the originals to get excited about, but certainly nice to have in mainstream circulation.
The Marvel Legends Spider-Man 2019 Wave 1 figures should be up for order in late 2018/early 2019, and are scheduled for release in Q1 2019. This is the first Marvel Legends wave of the year, so hopefully stores will order plenty and building Kingpin will be a cinch. (Hopefully.)
We somehow still haven’t seen every figure in the series, but what do you think do the Kingpin wave so far, Marvel collectors? Will you be buying all the figures in this set to build Kingpin, ordering a completed Kingpin off the aftermarket, picking and choosing your favorites, or skipping this wave entirely?
WHERE IS OUR CLASSIC VULTURE!!??? I was hoping to see if they would reveal the rest of the wave at NYCC… with that Vulture as the surprise classic villain.
Sadly quite an ugly & boring series. Maybe will just buy kingpin off eBay, or when they no doubt rerelease the figure in a two pack that’s a repaint with purple pants with some sort of daredevil. 🙂
Love the kingpin BAF but not feeling the rest of this wave. Silver Sable and red goblin aren’t characters I have any attachment to but are pretty good looking figures at least. No interest in this black cat, weird eyes spidey, or night thrasher. Hoping there’s a classic spidey villain like scorpion in one of the remaining spots.
Not sure why we have a black suit Spider-man when we are getting him the Kravan Last Hunt 2 pacķ.
There are some significant differences between the two. This symbiote Spider-Man has different eyes, spider on chest is different, clawed hand(s) and visible toes that also looked clawed.
I would absolutely LOVE to have that Kingpin, and I’m even liking the Night Thrasher figure as a fan of the old New Warriors team, but the rest of them… no. Sadly it seems I’ll just be admiring that Kingpin in photos only.
Does the “serious” Kingpin face have brown eyes, and the “angry” one have blue eyes?!! Also, I WANT to see Romita in the angry face, but I can’t un-see Tor Johnson….look it up, you will see instantly!
Re Silver Sable… Have you beaten the Spider-Man game yet? :p
I like the Black Cat and Silver Sable figures, but the rest of them seem kind of pointless. I’m a little surprised, really. These waves usually mix some really popular characters with a couple of second-tier characters that we’ll hold our nose and buy anyway to get the BAF. But this is the first time I’ve seen a wave where it appears that Hasbro is betting the BAF alone will sell the wave. And maybe it will, but personally I think I’ll wait for the Netflix Kingpin (even if it isn’t coming).
Kingpin actually looks like D’Onofrio from some angles, Gwen has a different haircut and several piercings in the film that the figure’s based off of.
Still no Frog Man.. Still no White Rabbit. But we’re getting Night Thrasher. There is no justice in the world.
One of my first Marvel Comics was a New Warriors Annual, and I immediately liked Night Thrasher. Glad to see him in figure form. I also started reading comics with Infinity Gauntlet #3, and then my first two comics that I started to collect as a series was Warlock and the Infinity Watch, and Silver Sable with beautiful artwork done by Stephen Butler. I started both of those because they were #1 issues, and I’m glad I’ll finally get a decent Silver Sable figure. I’d love to see the rest of the Wild Pack as figures, but they are pretty generic, so it probably won’t happen. Black Cat is ok, but I’d like her classic uniform, as I’ve just started collecting Legends this year, and her classic uniform has gone past what I’d pay. I’m not a fan of Black Spiderman or Red Goblin since I have no ties to them, but I do want Kingpin. It looks like my son will have a Black Spiderman to play with!
Eh..wow. Yeah I could see myself going for Kingpin, but the rest of the wave I’m struggling to like sadly.
I think it is only the Red Goblin I want. I’ve not yet read the story with him…but he sounds like the most evil and dangerous character in a long time. As for the figure itself…it just looks so cool and different! The rest of the line…I can pass.
Black Cat, Night Thrasher and Silver Sable are all must haves for me. Red Goblin is a character that I don’t know much about yet (I’m almost caught up to that point) but he certainly looks cool. Symbiote Spider-Man is the only one that is kind of meh. Hopefully, given the duo theme of this wave the 6th figure will be another New Warrior. I’d really love to get a Silhouette figure.
If they are going to do another New Warrior PLEASE let it be FIRESTAR!! Much needed and she might add some much needed “heat” to this wave.
Red Goblin’s face looks off. His pupils are too far apart (like a lizard) and his “teeth” look more like a goofy toothless old man. Hopefully he’ll come with his symbiote enhanced goblin glider and Spidey will come with detachable web wings (as I recall him having those in the “Go Down Swinging” issues). I was really looking forward to both those figures, but at the moment they still need a little work to look right. I actually think the Black Cat and Silver Sable sculpts and paint look great, though. Hasbro has finally cracked the code on making female faces.
Waiting on cosmic ghost rider and doom. Not a fan of this series. Definitely will pick up red goblin but that face is horrible.
