It’s no secret that Disney is subtly introducing the Young Avengers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Kate Bishop Hawkeye, Patriot, Wiccan and Speed all debuting (to an extent) over the past year. And another core Young Avenger is premiering in the MCU and as a 6” super-articulated Hasbro figure this spring: the Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness Marvel Legends America Chavez figure is now available! Should she punch her way through the Multiverse and into your collection? Here’s my review…
Hasbro must have similar high hopes for America Chavez, because they’re launching their first ever toy of the multiverse-hopping character in this year’s Doctor Strange Legends series. And hey —for a rookie figure, I think Hasbro did pretty great… in some areas.
The likeness to actress Xochitl Gomez isn’t Hot Toys Level or anything, but it’s still solid enough for a 6” Hasbro action figure portrait. The head sculpt definitely has a vibe of youth and mirth worked in, and I think it’s workable for either an MCU America Chavez or stand-in comic book Miss America.
The paint deco on America Chavez’s jacket is among the best and most extensive I can remember from Hasbro in years. There’s white stars running down the sides of both sleeves, red and white America stripes on the upper jacket, and a big ol’ red-outlined white star on the back. I particularly like the flame on her right sleeve cuff and the rainbow bar on the bottom of the back. All these details (and more) make this jean jacket a legit standout among this year’s Marvel Legends crop.
The paint deco fun doesn’t stop there, though. Marvel Legends America Chavez has painted belt buckles, buttons and even shoelaces. Hasbro really went above and beyond to make this six inch figure look great.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t “play” as good as it looks. As with many female Marvel Legends figures, the articulation here is a real let-down, with no biceps, waist or calves articulation. The complete articulation set includes:
- Ball-jointed head (inhibited by hair)
- Ball-hinge shoulders and elbows
- Swivel-hinge wrists
- Ball-Jointed Upper torso and hips
- Swivel Thighs
- Double-hinged knees
- Hinged shoes with rockers
The jacket and long hair make this figure feel really stiff and difficult to pose, which doesn’t pair well with her almost total lack of accessories.
For accessories, America gets a pair of open palm hands to pair with her default fists, and… that’s it. The biggest Rintrah Build-A-Figure part is also here, but I’m not sure that counts much since Rintrah is going to have limited appeal and the Rintrah BAF itself isn’t all that cool. The lack of any kind of star effects pieces (or effects at all) is a huge loss that really limits the dynamic poses you can achieve with this America Chavez Legends figure.
Overall: I don’t really love assigning a grade to this Marvel Legends America Chavez figure, as there’s a stark dichotomy between how I feel about how the figure looks and how it poses/plays. The paint deco on Miss America Chavez is easily the best in the entire Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness series, but the playability is the worst. The omitted articulation points are awful, and pair with the almost nonexistent accessories to make this a very challenging action figure to get into interesting poses or have much fun with.
I don’t think we’re likely to see another Marvel Legends 6” figure of this character any time soon. ML America Chavez Is a unique character entry and her jacket really is great-looking, so I think she’s a decent $22 purchase right now that may not stick around long enough to hit clearance pricing alongside Mordo and Astral Doctor Strange months from now.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m not a fan of the character, at least not yet. The whole concept of her character seems pandering to a section of fans while at the same time minimizing that same fan base. She fits in perfectly with the current female empowered Disney character mold, and it was a no brainer move by Hasbro to make her as a figure. It appears to be a well done piece, but if she doesn’t wow me in the film Hasbro won’t be getting my money.
You dont think shes a brand new character solely created for the movie do you?
