Just when it looked like Funko had managed to squeeze out every possible penny from countless canonical variants of the most iconic Marvel characters, they had a devilishly ingenious idea for this year’s Holiday Marvel POP Vinyls figures series. I instantly fell in love with the Funko POP Gingerbread Spider-Man figure, and had my pre-order locked in as soon as listings for the series went up in August. And now that Gingerbread Spidey has arrived…? I am not at all disappointed. In fact, I want more POPs in this stylized form…
Gifts are my love language and collecting is the specialized interest that is the driving force in my life, so I don’t think it will come as a shocking revelation to anyone that I am an easy mark for Christmas-themed holiday novelty collectibles. And so, as soon as Funko premiered photos of their new collection of holiday Marvel Gingerbread Pop Vinyls figures, it was a foregone conclusion that I was going to need to buy one… If not all of them.
So far I’ve only gotten one in-hand and a few more on order (Gingerbread Thanos, Gingerbread Hulk and Gingerbread Thor), but here’s my surprisingly positive review of my first arrival: the Funko POP Gingerbread Spider-Man figure!
Funko has now put out well over 900 POP Vinyls figures in their Marvel lineup, making it among the absolute most prolific figure lineups in toy history. So at some point, they were bound to run out of recognizable Spider-Man costumes from the comics, movies and cartoons to turn into low-priced bobble heads. But there’s still fans and collectors out there with money in their wallets, which Funko cannot abide! And so, the big F decided it was time to make up some wild variants of their own of popular Marvel characters!
And so, we now get Spider-Man, Captain America, Scarlet Witch and more… in Gingerbread Cookie form. And the results… are a lot more adorable (and awesome!) than you might expect.
I was feeling energetic, so I recorded a (terrible) unboxing of this particular figurine for some reason. Like all videos I’m in, it’s tedious as Hell to watch the 4 minutes of, so watch at your own peril.
The holiday Spider-Man Gingerbread POP is still a basic POP Vinyls figure, so he retails for the usual $9-$12 collectors are accustomed to paying for their POPs. Wonderful tiny gifts and perfect impulse buy pricing has made Funko zillions of dollars over the last decade-plus, with no sign of slowing down, so clearly the price is right.
The ever-popular art box is also present here, adorned by colorful artwork of Gingerbread Spidey and other characters in the series. I somehow didn’t remember this themed lineup being so large, and was taken aback a mite when I saw the box back.
Like most every Marvel POP ever, Gingerbread Spider-Man has a bobble head that wobbles when he’s moved (or sometimes just blown on). For a novelty type holiday toy like this one, the bobble feature really doesn’t feel out of place at all and doesn’t bother me as it has on more realistic/detailed POPs.
The design here is really quite simple—but so, so effective. The figure is a basic humanoid shape like a gingerbread cookie, but the fun comes from the pose and “icing” that brings this plastic pastry to life.
Spider-Man’s mask and costume details are composed of colored “icing” that is sculpted to have dimensionality and then painted into the red, white, blue and black we all know and love.
The “cookie” base body actually has little sculpted and painted textures so that it actually resembles a real gingerbread cookie! After photographing and looking at this figure enough, I really want to bake (and eat!) some legit edible Spidey gingerbread cookies.
The paintwork is overall exceptionally well-done, as it should be for a relatively simplistic POP like this one.
Perhaps the funnest touch of this figurine is that Spidey’s web line is made of white “icing”, and he’s held aloft by a clear support stand as if he’s swinging into your kitchen to perform some super heroic culinary exploits!
I might be overrating this a bit, but I seriously love the shit out of how creative this cheap little holiday Spider-Man toy is. It’s the most dynamic plastic gingerbread cookie I’ve ever purchased, that’s for sure!
Overall: I feel a little weird about assigning a grade to a holiday novelty collectible like this one, but ultimately I feel like it’s important to do so for those who skip reading my reviews and just scroll to the bottom. Funko took a whimsical idea and ran with it to wacky perfection. I love the hell out of this crazy POP Spider-Man Gingerbread cookie figure, and I legit haven’t been so happy with a Marvel POP in years. Brilliantly fun concept and outstanding execution make this $9 Marvel POP one of my favorite Marvel purchases of 2021. If you like zany comic book Christmas collectibles like this, absolutely check out this fantastically fun Funko offering.
