As the Funko Marvel Collector Corps subscription box service began three years ago with the Avengers Age of Ultron Box, it seems appropriate that the MCC comes to its conclusion in its current form with this month’s Avengers Infinity War Box. The service will apparently be continuing via Amazon at some point, but for now, this is the grand finale. Does the Avengers Infinity War Collector Corps Box end things on a high note, or with untapped potential? Read on for my review…
With the end nigh, I got nostalgic and was hoping to find some of the longtime staples of the MCC in this box, like a comic book, patch, pin and/or T-Shirt. Unfortunately, NONE of those mainstays turn out to actually be present in the box.
Instead, much like the Thor Ragnarok box from last fall, we get what seems like a pretty random assortment of items to complement the box’s POP Vinyl (which I’ll save talking about for last, as it’s the best item in the box).
For the first time ever in one of these Marvel Collector Corps boxes, we get… Key Caps…? Funko gets points from me for hitting us with something I never expected in this box, but unfortunately, I’ll never use these Gamora and Iron Man Key Caps. They are cute, though.
Incidentally, there are two different possible packs of Key Caps that have been randomly inserted into these boxes, with the other two-pack being Spider-Man and Thanos. Guardians of the Galaxy is a collecting focus of mine, so I’m glad I got the set with Gamora, personally.
The second item in the box is another first for MCC: a bandana. We got some fairly neat patterned bandanas from the Star Wars Smugglers Bounty Box last year, the Avengers bandana is less fun, as it just has an Iron Man Mark 50 on it. I don’t wear bandanas or know any friends or family who do, so this second item is also a misfire for me.
Thirdly, we’ve got yet another first in the Collector Corps Box: a non-POP Mug! While the POP Mugs weren’t always well-received, I really enjoyed them myself, and would have dug a Thanos Head mug here. Instead, this is a standard mug with a sort of color-changing feature.
This Infinity War mug has an empty Infinity Gauntlet on it when it’s cold, but the Infinity Stones magically appear when you pour in a hot drink. This mug isn’t a bad item and the feature works well (as you can see in my before-and-after photo above), but it feels like something we’d get from a Loot Crate—not a Funko Marvel Box. This mug just doesn’t have a “Funko” feel to it at all.
Thankfully, there’s at least one item in the box that I think most collectors will really like: an Exclusive POP Thanos with Sanctuary 2 set.
The box for this Thanos POP is absolutely HUGE, and as a result, the Collector Corps Infinity War Box itself is the largest we’ve ever seen from the bimonthly boxes.
This isn’t specifically labeled as a POP Rides set—possibly because the Thanos figurine is actually non-removable from the Sanctuary II spaceship that he comes sitting inside of.
The Sanctuary II comes attached to a little stand so it can be “hovering” above the ground. I always appreciate a flight stand for any aircraft–too many companies just don’t include them.
In addition, we’ve gotten so many exclusive Thanos figures already for Avengers Infinity War that getting another one here just doesn’t feel at all special. I wish Funko had given us a character not getting a POP for the movie or even saved the Hulkbuster 2.0 for this box—there’s just no “Wow!” factor for the Sanctuary II with a non-removable half-Thanos.
Overall: I’m devastated to say it, but for me, this final Powered by Funko Marvel Collector Corps Box is a real disappointment. The mug and bandana don’t feel like Funko items at all, and while I appreciate the random aspect of the Key Caps, they’re not anything I’ll ever use. The POP Thanos in Santuary 2 set is cool and huge, but doesn’t feel all that special with the multitude of Thanos POPs already out this year. It breaks my heart, but I think this is legit my least favorite MCC Box throughout the entire run of the service.
The mug is being sold in Hot Topic here in L.A. for I think it was $16.99
Is it the same one? With the Infinity War logo on the side and everything?
Hey Dadid,NE Philadelphia toys are us has Thor,Rocket and Groot in stores.
I actually really liked the box but I also use bandanas all the time and have a huge soft spot for color changing mugs. The pop is also pretty impressive regardless of the weirdness of the ride aspect. It’s not the best box I’ve gotten from them but I’m satisfied with it.
It felt like a cheap parting gift to get out the door – they could have humanized it with a letter about what could be coming up, check out -X- site/feed. But nothing for the loyal reg subscribers. Eh, pop u too ^_~ No legit Deadpool box now @_x
I used to love this service. Then the Ragnarok box happened. No shirt (major disappointment) and a fidget spinner? Those are only entertaining for 5 year olds. After that was the whole “Animal Instinct” debacle. I assumed it was a Black Panther box and placed my order in January, only for it to be cancelled like a day before the boxes shipped out. It was ridiculous but I’m glad it saved me from getting such a weird and crappy box. Why on earth would they not make one for Black Panther?? This Infinity War one was absolutely inexcusable. I love the POP but why did they include a goddamn bandanna? The boxes without shirts are always the weakest and they clearly started losing their touch when they stopped including the comic, patch, and pin in the boxes.
