Every so often, Hasbro will end up releasing a 6” Marvel Legends figure that blows my mind in both positive and negative regard. Such is the case with one of the most difficult Marvel Legends figures to find at retail so far this year: Iron Spider! Though Marvel Legends Iron Spider is selling for double on the aftermarket and is tough to snag at retail, this release baffles by what’s present being perfect, and what’s not present driving collectors nuts…
The Right:
And so, despite being perhaps the absolute most popular of all Marvel characters, the Infinity War Spider-Man Iron Spider figure ended up shipping at one per case and has been a real pain for many to find locally. Is he worth the trouble…?
Well… yes and no. We’ll start with the “yes” portion.
The sculpt on this Iron Spider Marvel Legends figure is awesome. Every millimeter of this figure is covered in textures and intricate sculpting details. The raised Spider-Man emblem on the front of the costume really jumps out at you and looks terrific, and I love that every last line is sculpted instead of painted.
Bad paint can ruin a great sculpt, but that doesn’t happen here. Hasbro chose shiny, slightly metallic paints that pop and drive home that this is an armored costume and not just a spandex one. The gold paint really brings this to life.
And don’t worry—Hasbro hasn’t done us dirty for articulation. Every point you’d reasonably expect is present and accounted for: butterfly swivel ball-hinged shoulders; ball-hinge head; swivel waist/thighs/biceps; ab crunch; double-hinged knees and elbows; swivel-hinge wrists and hinged ankles with rockers.
ML Iron Spider can easily support himself in most poses with his tight joints, and QC seems sky high—nothing feels the slightest bit weak or like it’s going to break.
The Wrong:
There are none. (That was short.)
While we do get a movie Thanos Build-A-Figure leg as a pack-in, Spidey himself gets zero. When you take into account that he has two web-shooting hands only by default, that’s a monumental problem, since this Iron Spider-Man figure literally can’t throw a punch, grab a bad guy, or do anything else whatsoever. I’m saddened to see this Spidey suffering the same fate as poor MC2 Spider-Girl.
Of course, interchangeable hands aren’t the only thing collectors would have wanted with this figure. The gold mechanical legs that spring from the back of the suit are a major part of Spidey’s action in the movie, and they’re totally absent here. It’s a real bummer.
…But that’s not all! Spider-Man may spend more time with his mask off than with it on in Infinity War, but this figure won’t be taking it off period because there’s no Unmasked Peter Parker Tom Holland head.
If this figure came with at least one of these critical accessories I might be able to overlook the lack of the rest, but considering he gets a big, fat nothing for extras, it’s hard not to be critical of all the missed potential this figure has.
Overall: While I was rather upset when I first got my Infinity War Legends Iron Spider out of the package and realized he came with bupkis for accessories and couldn’t even throw a punch, he grew on me somewhat while I was photographing him. Hasbro did a flat-out fantastic job when it comes to the sculpting, paint and articulation on this Spider-Man figure.
Even so, the lack of interchangeable hands, mechanical legs, and/or an unmasked Tom Holland head crush a lot of the fun ideas for ways collectors would like to display this figure. As a base figure this Iron Spidey is phenomenal, but the omitted accessories are a huge disappointment that substantially drops what would otherwise be a near-perfect release. A good figure, but I’ll be upgrading to the SH Figuarts Iron Spider figure without a doubt because of its robot legs and assortment of alternate hands.
Lack of accessories seems a huge problem for this year’s ML figs. Most of the characters from the Lizard Wave had no accessories, Deadpool in his own wave only having swords, and few accessories in the Thanos wave too. I’m hoping the Marvel Select is a good alternative to this, as I don’t want to go $100 in on the Figuarts
The hands are a particular crime here. Every pose is firing webs? How is that even something they considered at all, much less shipped out to the world? If you aren’t going to do extra hands, only make one firing webs. Heck, it isn’t like they’d need to do much sculpting to make that happen. Mostly just paint on old hands they have laying around.
But the robotic legs will probably be included when they re-sell this figure to us later in a Marvel Legends 10 Years of the MCU pack later this year…
Nope. That pack has already leaked and Hasbro, ever the greatest company on Earth, couldn’t be bothered to do anything like that.
This is a rare case where I’m totally fine getting him again this year. I just hope he has fists, articulated back arms, BLUE eyes, and a Tom Holland head. And maybe an even more metallic look
He looks absolutely stunning, but I hate thwip hands, and the lack of mechanical arms is unacceptable. I can’t believe this is going for so much money.
I’m not sure if this counts but it kind of looks like Tom Holland I thought the homecoming Toys R Us to pack was actually not bad and I love that head on every single one of my MCU Spidey figures now but I’m pretty sure they can do better though.
I agree with everything you said. Was going to get him but then the price just went back up to $40 on Amazon. I will definitely get him once he goes back down to normal price.
