REVIEW: Marvel Legends Shang-Chi Master of Kung Fu Figure (Hasbro 2020)

I’ve been rationing out reviews for the last few 2020 Marvel Legends figures I’ve received thus far–and I’m not willing to go out for a pandemic toy run–so hopefully the next waves of Hasbro Marvel Legends ship via online retailers soon. But in the meantime, I’ve got at least one headliner (at least to hardcore comic book fans!) figure left to review! The first-ever 6″ Shang-Chi Legends figure is now available for order in the Spider-Man Demogoblin Series–has Hasbro done a masterful job with the Master of Kung Fu?

Marvel Legends Shang Chi Figure Review

So let me begin with a confession: While I have read thousands (and I mean thousands) of Marvel comics over the years, I think the number of comics featuring Shang Chi that I’ve read is somewhere in the single digits… or maybe zero.

Sure, I know who the Master of Kung Fu is and his history and legacy as a character–but to me, he’s basically like the comic book version of Liu Kang. Luckily, I love Liu Kang, and am excited to have a new figure resembling him! Is it a good one…?

Marvel Legends Shang Chi Master of Kung Fu Packaged

Well, while I am far from an expert on Shang-Chi, I can recognize a spectacularly super-poseable action figure of a martial artist–and this is definitely one of them. The complete articulation scheme is as follows:

  • Ball-Hinge Neck
  • Ball-Hinge Shoulders with Butterfly Swivel
  • Ab Crunch
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists
  • Ball Hips
  • Double-Hinge Knees and Elbows
  • Swivel Thighs, Waist and Biceps
  • Hinged Feet with Rockers

Shang Chi Legends Hasbro Figure vs Demogoblin Build-A-Figure

While this figure doesn’t quite have the range of motion necessary to do the splits (like the new Retro Series Spider-Man coming up), he can do pretty much everything else you would want. Balancing on one bare foot can be challenging, but is also possible.

The sculpting and design on this figure looks mostly fantastic to me, with the upper body musculature seeming perfect for this character and the portrait looking fairly in-line with the comic book appearance of the character (as far as I can tell from a Google image search, anyway).

Shang Chi Action Figure Toy vs Doppelganger Spider Man

The one thing that really bugs me about the mold is how the upper legs/hips are the totally smooth and tight-looking kind, where everything from the thighs down is the baggy and wrinkled type.

Seems inconsistent, although I suspect it is an issue that won’t trouble many fans. And the cool designs around the hems at the bottom of the legs definitely draw my eye more.

Back of Shang Chi Master of Kung Fu Marvel Legends Figure

There’s two add-on costume pieces to the basic mold here: the tassels on the back of Shang Chi’s headband and his belt. The belt fits around the figure’s waist snugly and doesn’t drive me nuts like so many add-on bits have in the last year or two, and the tassels are dynamically posed and look terrific.

Spider-Man Legends Shang Chi Figure and Accessories Demogoblin Series

Not only is the six inch figure itself here excellent, but he also comes with a rather exemplary load out of accessories! Not only do we get the largest piece of the Demogoblin Build-A-Figure (the body), but we also get a pair of all-new nunchucks and a… few… alternate hands!

Marvel Master of Kung Fu Shang-Chi Legends 6" Figure

Remember that white costume Iron Fist figure from the inaugural Avengers Legends wave (the Allfather Series with Odin and King Thor), and how it came with an unprecedented eight interchangeable hands…? Yeah–Hasbro ups the ante here by including a whopping ten interchangeable hands this time out! I imagine this is a Hasbro record that will stand for years to come!

There’s fists, nunchuck-holding hands, karate chop hands, and two pairs of Kung Fu hands in various other positions. I’m not a very creative poser, but even I can get a variety of neat poses out of this figure by swapping around the abundance of hands. Cool beans!

Shang Chi Marvel Legends Figure Review Nunchucks

The nunchucks aren’t perfect–as they clearly look a little toy-ish and plastic–but I do enjoy the fact that they’re unique sculpts with impressive dragon heads on the handles, as well as the fact that one of them is molded in a bent, dynamic pose. There’s a lot of fun to be had with these nunchucks, even if they are a little bit imperfect.

Spider-Man Marvel Legends Shang-Chi vs Darkwing Duck Bushroot Figure

Overall: Marvel Legends Shang-Chi is a wonderfully entertaining action figure of a character that is long, long overdue to get the super-articulated figure treatment. The excellent articulation scheme and range of motion combine with the generous assortment of hands to give his biggest fans the poseable Master of Kung Fu action figure that they deserve.

I think that the the deco on the nunchucks could be improved somewhat and I’m not 100% sold on how the mold chosen for the thighs flows into the legs, but this is an outstanding toy overall. This toy is going to get a lot more popular and in-demand as the character’s MCU movie debut approaches, so now is the time to grab one of these for retail if you think you’ll want one.

REVIEW: Marvel Legends Shang-Chi Master of Kung Fu Figure (Hasbro 2020) — 16 Comments

  1. Yeah, this is a great figure. And as a huge G.I. Joe fan, this Quick Kick… err… Shang Chi figure is worth the price of admission any way it gets sliced. The Demogoblin BAF probably gave it a little more kick not to mention the upcoming film. But this is the route I hope Hasbro takes in revisiting old characters… movies or not… filling in certain gaps that will attract us old school collectors. I know I may ask too much but my thoughts are solid in support of the old school collectors. I’ve kept my expectations at bay and understand the toy business doesn’t cater to individual or even collective yearnings. But this is a nice olive branch and I hope Hasbro (and Disney, to a certain extent) continue to throw us a few doggie biscuits every now and then.

BTW… I just picked up a Black Widow wave Taskmaster fig at Walgreens today for $9.99… wasn’t even a figment until I checked out… and got pleasantly surprised. I had only planned on grabbing Red Guardian and possibly Crossbones from this wave. For all your concern with health and security, I hope you lot think twice… but once that second thought passes, Walgreens might be a better option… the only other ML figure available was the Walgreen’s exclusive Ant-Man… almost grabbed that, too. 🙂

  2. I originally only preordered Vulture and White Rabbit from this wave. I luckily found Shang-Chi out in the wild, at Walmart, and I decided to pick him up. Like you, I have never seen Shang-Chi in a comic book that I’ve read, but he’s generic enough, that he can fit in a lot of other toy lines, if I wanted. Mortal Kombat did come to mind when I first saw him, and I also thought he’d be a good Quick Kick from G.I.Joe. I bet we see some of these parts for him in the Classified line. I’m glad that I picked him up though. He is a great figure.

    • Quick Kick is definitely the theme here especially for those of us too young (at the time, of course) to remember all of Marvel’s memes from that era. But this is a solid figure and I hope Marvel and Hasbro shake a few things off and put out a lot more Legends figures like this… not only as an homage but as a reminder that there are still old school toy collectors out there and we’ll be be pretty good cash cows. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to brush up on some Shang Chi history and figure out how he was NOT some cultural bandwagon gimmick, which Stan Lee has coughed up to on countless occasions, that doesn’t really resonate today. Regardless, I would have given Shang Chi an “A”, too, for every reason mentioned on top of being a solid action figure. Want more and the more obscure and/or forgotten by historical norms, the better!

        • You obviously picked up on just what you wanted to argue. Understandable, but not the point I was making. Was trying to make a connection to another certain action figure that I was more interested in and now I see the influence (as others do, too) on the recycling of certain Marvel characters that were shown in other iterations of Marvel comics. Gee, I wonder how that gets transferred. The “meme” I referred to was in regard to the upcoming movie that is supposed to have Shang Chi… to which I think is a great addition… just bringing forth that aspect… no need for your bollocks.

      • I was super-excited to get a Shang-Chi figure; I had a stack of his comic books as a kid! But I sure wish Hasbro had given us an alternate “screaming” Shang-Chi head. I’ve took years of karate classes and watched every Bruce Lee film—I can tell you it is really hard to fight and hit someone with your mouth closed the whole time 😅😅😅

        • You should check out the film “Enter The Ninja” and see how it correlates with the G.I. Joe comics…
          .

  3. It’s long overdue. He’s got over 100 issues under his belt. Probably a pipe dream, but I hope we get supporting comic version characters in the future. The only minor gripe that I have with this figure is his triceps are way too big.

  4. Here’s hoping for a Hasbro release of Classic Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Ramos White Tiger.

        • My very first comic book purchases were G.I. Joe, Power Man and Iron Fist, Thor, Web of Spider-Man, and Star Wars (yes, a Marvel comic series at the time) back in 1983 at the bookshop at Ramstein AFB. I think they were 60 or 65 cents a pop.

    • I thought I saw a Hasbro classic Cage on ebaY… . But for sure they have released a couple Iron Fist figures. I remember a white costume IF from the Avengers/Odin Allfather BAF wave a few years ago, and then there was green costume repaint.

By “Ramos White Tiger,” do you mean the artist Humberto Ramos? Or did another woman take on the WT identity besides Angela Del Toro?

  5. Nice adding the Bushroot figure oddly enough too btw (and review too, accurate for me as well as a longtime Marvelite on the Spidey/Hulk and Mutant side of things)
