For the first time ever, Hasbro opted to go with a Marvel Legends 12″ figure instead of a 3.75″ set as their second SDCC 2017 Marvel Legends exclusive. And moreover, this limited exclusive isn’t some mere variant costume of a previously released character–it’s an all-new figure in by far the more gorgeous packaging ever for one of these sixth scale figures! The Marvel Legends 12″ Daredevil figure is selling online for slightly above his MSRP, and it’s easy to see why: this figure is excellent…
And what’s more, Hasbro didn’t opt for some obscure character or a minor variant–they went straight to one of the hottest characters at Marvel today: Daredevil!
This doesn’t feel like a mere upscaled version of the 2015 Marvel Legends Daredevil 6″ figure at all–there’s more sculpting detail, way more accessories, and a much better paint job than we got on that figure.
All of the usual super-articulation points are not only present here, but we also get the butterfly shoulder swivels that are quickly rising in popularity, as well as a ball-jointed upper torso that’s tight and works well.
And speaking of tight: all the joints on this figure feel very sturdy, with the exception of the biceps, which feel a bit loose and rubbery. The figure can hold a dynamic pose without a cinch, including one-legged high kicks (my favorite test of an action figure’s stability)!
The paint deco on Daredevil is expertly applied, and I especially like the subtlety different shiny red used on the armored parts of the costume such as the forearm protectors. The only part of the paint apps I’m not wild about is the lips, which seem a tad too pronounced to me.
Like all figures thus far in the 12″ ML series, Daredevil comes boxes and with a tray full of accessories–including an alternate head sculpt. The amount of accessories we get in this line is really quite generous, and needs to be taken into consideration more when people balk at the suggest retail price.
Daredevil includes both a masked head and an unmasked Matt Murdock head, along with four pairs of hands (both regular gloved and wrapped grasping hands and fists), interchangeable forearm coverings (Daredevil costume and wrappings), two billy clubs and an empty mask.
Personally, I’m never going to display my 12″ Daredevil figure just hanging out with his beaten-up Matt Murdock head on–nor with the wrapped up hands–but I know there are likely a lot of collectors out there (particularly big fans of the Netflix series) who will really appreciate these extras and choose to dispay DD with them.
The wrapped forearms and hands molds will be useful if Hasbro ever makes a 12″ Iron Fist, and I admit they do look neat on the figure when it’s posed with the Matt Murdock unmasked head (even if unmasked Daredevil isn’t how I roll).
There’s a holster on Daredevil’s left leg with slots for his two billy clubs to plug into. They fit snugly and without the least amount of wobbliness, so there’s no need to worry about them popping out until you’re ready to pull them out yourself.
Rather than giving DD the simple window box treatment regular figures in this line get, ol’ Hornhead gets a special book-style opening flap on the front that features original Joe Quesada artwork and shiny metallic printing.
Almost as cool is the fact that the back of the box features actual bumpy Braille text printed onto it! Hasbro really went above and beyond with the box for this toy.
One more very cool detail that I worry many fans are going to miss about this Daredevil figure’s packaging is the fact that there are two Joe Quesada art prints made of heavy card stock inserted in the box on the inside of the flap. The original box art is gorgeous, and getting the two prints for free is a great bonus.
Overall: The 12″ Marvel Legends Daredevil SDCC 2017 Exclusive figure is an outstanding release all–around. The packaging is a sight to behold and the Daredevil figure itself comes with ample accessories, a near-perfect articulation scheme, and excellent quality control. If the Marvel Legends 12 inch figure line ever really catches on in popularity (and I hope it does), there’s no question this Comic Con Daredevil will be the most sought-after and expensive figure from early in the series.
This figue looks great. Hope they find some way to release if not a retool or maybe missing some accessories. That face looks to me more like the actor that plays Foggie Nelson in the Netflix show than any Matt Murdock I have seen.
I believe Hasbro based the head off the Matt Murdock that Joe Quesada drew for the box art.
You’d think being 12″ range that the head sculpts would be pretty good, but so far across the board, every figure has a hideous, god awful, hit every branch of the ugly tree, sort of head sculpt.
Maybe pictures don’t do them justice, which sounds a bit of a cop out, but judging from said pictures, this range is so damn ugly.
The thing I dont like about this line is that because they are so big, the lack of paint is more noticing to me, make me wish to shade it my self. It still looks really neat though, i might get it for a custom job.
