With hype for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie in full swing last July, the SDCC 2013 Exclusive Rocket Raccoon Warbird set became a hot commodity that blew away everyone’s expectations, at one time selling for well over $200 on the afternarket. This year’s exclusive LEGO Marvel box set… is probably going to be a tad less desirable: it’s the just-announced exclusive SDCC 2015 LEGO Throne of Ultron set!
For this year’s one LEGO Marvel exclusive set that will be for sale at the LEGO booth at the 2015 SDCC (yes, there will also be an exclusive promo minifigure given away randomly as well), we’ll be getting the LEGO Throne of Ultron set!
The set includes a brick-built throne and four Minifigures: three Ultron Sentry figures and the Ultimate Ultron Minifigure. None of these figures or characters are unique, so the only thing that’s truly “exclusive” about this set is the packaging.
This set is… cute (in an “evil robot sitting on a throne kind of way”), but it just doesn’t have the “oomph” that last year’s Rocket Raccoon set (which had a variation of Rocket that remained exclusive for almost half a year) did.
With three Ultron Sentry minifigures released months ago in a $12 battle pack and Ultimate Ultron packed with the LEGO Quinjet, the throne itself is the most compelling part of this diorama. And while it’s a nice throne and all, I just don’t see that throne being worth the fuss, bother and expense of trying to nab this particular set.
Personally, I was willing to drop $100+ for the Rocket’s Warbird set last year. This year…? I’ll pass and just build the throne from spare LEGO pieces laying around. This 203 piece set is a bad value for the at-con price of $39.99, in my opinion–for the likely $80-$120+ the set will sell for on the secondary market, I’ll happily live without.
There will be a limited allocation of the Throne of Ultron set for each day of San Diego Comic-Con 2015 next month (although getting these SDCC LEGO exclusives at the show admittedly often requires something akin to a miracle). If you’re going to be at the show and want this exclusive, you’ll need to make LEGO your top priority one morning of the event or you’re all buy guaranteed disappointment.
How do you like this year’s boxed LEGO Marvel SDCC 2015 exclusive set, LEGO fans? Will you be fighting the mobs at the con for th chance to purchase this set, picking it up on the aftermarket for double (or triple) its original price, or passing on this LEGO Ultron Throne set altogether?
Correct me if I’m wrong but I just checked my wall of marvel mini figures and these ultron sentrys ARE exclusive. The ones in the set are red, while these are blue. Not that that makes it worth that much money to me…just saying!
Last year I got the rocket raccoon set at SDCC and it WAS by a miracle. This year I can’t attend SDCC so I’m happy the set isn’t that great!
The ones in the Battle Pack are DEFINITELY blue, though, as are the ones in this SDCC set. I reviewed them here: http://www.bricksandbloks.com/lego-iron-man-vs-ultron-76029-review-photos/
Ahhh you’re right! The only difference is the neckbrace now. Absolutely not worth buying. They shouldve went with a buildable Ultron figure, something like Rocket Raccoon
That was meant to say Groot, not Rocket Raccoon…DOH. And ignore the reply below…didnt realize this one posted. Sorry!
Ah you’re right! Only difference is the neckbrace. Not worth a buy.
