With the all-important Hasbro Marvel panel happening just a few hours from now, I would have totally understood if Hasbro has decided to just not add any new reveals at all to their San Diego Comic Con booth display up until they drop the mega-ton later today. And for the most part, there’s not a whole lot that’s all-new in the booth today–with one key exception! We can add one more to the list of confirmed characters in the Marvel Legends Vintage Series, as the 6″ Vintage Iron Man has now been revealed!
UPDATE: And now Tony Stark has some company in the display case–the Marvel Legends Lasher figure has been added!
When I first saw the Marvel Legends Vintage Iron Man figure, it took me a moment to recall exactly where I had seen it before, and then I remembered: this is a slightly modified version of the Marvel Legends Neo-Classic Iron Man figure that I wrote a scathing review of almost half a decade ago!
(Yes, believe it or not, there was a time before Marvel Toy News existed and I posted my reviews elsewhere. Craziness, right?)
The original Neo-Classic Iron Man figure was part of the Epic Heroes/Return of Marvel Legends Series III wave that also gave us modern Mystique and Punisher figures (and Dani Moonstar and Blade running changes that never materialized–alas).
If you read my old review, you know that I really didn’t like this undersized 6″ Iron Man action figure back in 2012. Hasbro has modified the figure to give him normal-sized boots (though the Mega Man-like thick boots have kinda grown on me over the years) and added boot thrusters effects pieces, but this figure is still nowhere near up to Hasbro’s modern level of excellence.
The nostalgia of the Toybiz-styled packaging for these figures definitely sells me on picking up a set to keep packaged, but at least I’ll be able to save some dollars by not picking up a second copy of this particular Vintage Series Iron Man figure to open.
The four figures confirmed in this series thus far are Iron Man, Spider-Man, Punisher and Captain America, with the other two characters the complete the series expected to be revealed tonight at the Hasbro Marvel SDCC 2017 panel. Stay tuned.
Lasher was one of my favorite symbiotes from the old days–and I love his out-of-scale Toybiz figure–so I’m glad to see him getting updated by Hasbro (although non-symbiote fans are probably gonna be a mite annoyed with this selection).
Big thanks to @kaijubloks on Instagram for sending in his photos of Iron Man and Lasher!
Thoughts on the Iron Man Vintage packaged figure, Marvel collectors? Other than the sweet packaging, is anyone really excited for another shot at this particular Iron Man action figure? And are you psyched or unimpressed with one of the more obscure symbiotes, Lasher, getting his own figure?
I actually really like the previous version of this Iron Man figure (can’t really justify my opinion in any objective way!). So…it seems like I am 4 for 4 right now on basically already owning these “Vintage” figures. Great idea on the part of Hasbro…but I guess a part of me is releived that I can save some toy budget $!!
What’s the fourth figure in your 4 for 4?
Did you not see the Punisher?
Wait, never mind, you already realized you forgot him, ignore my comment.
The Punisher was also revealed in the vintage line.
Yikes! I even posted an article about him yesterday. Never mind me, I’m just senile… Haha.
I kind of wish that they would have done an updated version of the modular armor instead. Either way, can’t wait to buy 2 of each of the four vintage figures that were announced
Seriously. At the very least, they could have included a Tony Stark head.
Seriously. At the least they could have included a Tony Stark head.
I want that Cap now!!!
Well, you can get him yesterday. He’s from the red skull onslaught wave and you can get him with an alternate cap-wolf head and a BAF piece. I’m not buying into these BAF-less vintage serious re-issues.
This is a better repaint of the Red Onslaught wave Cap, and he comes with Secret War Cap’s shield throwing effect.
Will the panel be streamed?
I’m confused by the very different paint apps on the two Lasher figures.
I think it’s the same paint apps the lighting and different angles are whats making them look different.
There’s only one. It’s literally the exact same figure.
The interesting thing with the repurposed Iron Man figure is that the new lower legs look like they’d make him taller… and potentially rectify his size problem. This might be good news for anyone looking for a more classic-looking Iron Man. That said he still has the older hip-joint so it might still put some people off.
I HOPE the new lower legs fix his size problems, but I really doubt they will.
I just hope Lasher does not replace the rumored Spider-man Noir.
