UPDATE 9/5/2018: Many, many collectors are still trying to track down numerous recently-released series such as the Marvel Legends Venom Series, Sauron Series and Apocalypse series, but there’s truly no rest for the weary–the 2018 Marvel Legends Vintage Series 2  figures are now up for order as singles and in sets! Marvel Legends Vintage Blue Wasp Figure Packaged Hasbro 2018UPDATE 7/23/2018: As expected, the final two characters in this year’s Marvel Legends Vintage Series 2 assortment were revealed during the Hasbro Marvel panel. Neither figure was a shocker, as it had been rumored that classic Vision and Hawkeye figures would take those last two slots–and they did. But what might be a pleasant surprise for some cynical collectors is that these are no mere repaints–they’re the definitive Marvel Legends Vision and Hawkeye!

ORIGINAL 7/21/2018: At last year’s San Diego Comic Con, Hasbro revealed the entirety of an all new line of Vintage Marvel Legends figures over the course of several days of the convention. SDCC 2018 is much the same, as Marvel Legends Vintage Wave 2 has been making its debut, two figures at a time! While we haven’t officially seen the last pair yet, so far Hasbro has revealed Marvel Legends Vintage Scarlet Spider, Black Panther, Classic Ant-Man and… the legendary blue Wasp variant!?

While many longtime collectors wrote off the retro Marvel Legends Vintage Collection as being a bunch of repacks and minor repaints, I love it. The Toybiz-styled packaging art hits all my sentimental heartstrings, and I think the figures in the first wave of Vintage Legends were almost all improvements over the original figures they were based on.

How’s the Marvel Legends Vintage Series 2 stacking up? Let’s have a look…

The biggest jaw-dropper by a landslide in this series is the Marvel Legends Blue Wasp Figure. Wasp in her blue costume has achieved legendary status because of the Toybiz variants that only a handful of were ever produced, and which sell for thousands of dollars in the rare instances that they show up for sale online.

Vintage Wasp Marvel Legends Blue Variant Figure HasbroThis Hasbro Retro Marvel Legends Blue Wasp figure obviously isn’t a recreation of the Toybiz prototype, but it still looks really groovy and is a must-have for my collection. At last, I shall own the Blue Wasp figure I’ve dreamed of for well over a decade!

SDCC 2018 Marvel Legends Vintage Ant-Man Figure PackageAnd hey, you can’t have Wasp in a series without Ant-Man, right? We haven’t had a classic comic book Hank Pym Ant-Man Marvel Legends figure in many years, so this is a welcome addition to the lineup.

Vintage Marvel Legends Wave 2 Ant-Man and the Wasp FigureI’m not sure that the lanky Pizza Spider-Man body mold chosen for the Marvel Legends Vintage Ant-Man is necessarily what I would have picked, but he still looks decent. I love that both Ant-Man and Wasp come with a mini figure of the other!

Marvel Legends Vintage Black Panther Figure SDCC 2018

The second duo Hasbro showed off were Marvel Legends Scarlet Spider and Black Panther Figures. The Black Panther figure looks nice and all—and the classic necklace is neat—but I’m getting a bit burned-out on Black Panther action figures at this point.

That classic hoodie-wearing Scarlet Spider Legends figure, however, is definitely my jam! The 2015 Rhino Series Scarlet Spider has been getting increasingly expensive on the aftermarket, so this is a great choice. An even better move by Hasbro is including the blonde Ben Reilly unmasked head to sell this figure to those who already own the original!

Marvel Legends Vintage Scarlet Spider Figure SDCC 2018The Marvel Legends Retro Wave 2 series should be up for order this fall and released before the end of 2018. I’d anticipate that the final two figures will be 100% revealed by tonight (almost totally confirmed as Hawkeye without metal arm and a classic Vision at this point), and I’ll add photos of them to this article once images are available. Big thanks to James Gorham for sending in his photos of Scarlet Spider and Black Panther from the show!

Are you happy to see another wave of retro Marvel Legends released, Marvel collectors? Would you like to see a new wave in this fashion released every year, or are you satisfied with just these two series?

Marvel Legends Vintage Wave 2 Up for Order! Vision! Scarlet Spider! Blue Wasp! — 15 Comments

  1. I’m pumped that this line exists!! I REALLY like the wasp figure and love it they went with the costume choice they did. I see wasp as a red costume character but I wanted that Blue wasp from day 1.
    Bring on VISION AND HAWKEYE!
I would really like it if they showed some X-MEN love in this line. X-men was huge at Toy biz!! I think a Dazzler with her blue costume and Captain Marvels head would be fairly easy. Maybe a classic Colossus or a first appearance Kitty Pryde? So much potential!

  2. This is the first ever Pym Ant-Man, right? The ToyBiz packaging referred to Scott Lang if I remember correctly.

The Wasp looks terrific. No need at all for the Black Panther and seems like a waste of a roster spot, though I do understand that repaints and repacks are part of the model that allows for some of our favorite, more obscure characters.

I am looking forward to the Hawkeye and Vision figures, and have to admit that the Scarlet Spider seems out of place in what had previously appeared to be a classic set of strictly Avengers figures.

  3. Probably pick up the Wasp figure, but the main thing that got my attention here was the Thing and Silver Surfer popping up peripherally. When are those things going to be widely available? Need!

    • I already got a Silver Surfer at EBGames in Ontario, Canada, so I can imagine some Gamestops must have them by now. No idea on Thing, but it can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned.

  4. If Vision and Hawkeye are accurate, then I love how this wave is more than half the lineup from Avengers: United They Stand, the late ’90s Avengers cartoon. Just need Falcon, Tiger, and Wonder Man.
Black Panther seems unnecessary, in light of the full BP wave coming out.
I love the blond Ben Reilly head, but I’m gonna have to put it on his Spider-Man costume, since he never had the blond hair when he was Scarlet Spider.

  5. I can see why they went with the pizza Spidey body. I never really thought a geeky scientist like Hank Pym would be a barrel chested badass like Captain America or Wolverine.

  6. Nice job, Hasbro. You finally got the right web shooters on Scarlet Spider. But you gave him blonde hair? Why!?! He didn’t go blonde until he became Spider-Man. Read a book. Do research. Jeeze.

  7. Hi! First of all, thank you very much for this absolutely wonderful web page! I am a Marvel Legends collector from Spain and I do love this site!
Concerning this series, I love all the figures! Just a comment: from my point of view, Hawkeye could be considered as a kind of repaint (with new arms) of the corresponding Hawkeye from the Allfather (Odin) series. Even so, I need it!!!

  8. I think there is a bit of over-hyping going on…

    Wasp & Vision = B- to C

    Hawkeye & Antman = C to D

    Scarlet Spider & Black Panther = D- to F———-

Seriously, Black Panther in a vintage wave is going to be the powered down version of his most recent comic look?? Really??? How about a classic cowl-bearing Black Panther with an interchangeable head featuring the partial face-mask? Do the character’s LONG-STANDING HISTORY some justice instead of just cranking out easy repaints…

And Scarlet Spider – wow, sculpted wrist-shooters is all it takes to get the fandom excited? That’s all it takes to justify that 22 dollar price-point? C’mon. And in all honesty, if you had both the Ben Reilly Spider-Man and the first release Scarlet Spider, swapping their web-shooters gave you a decent rendering of the two looks.
I will concede that if you missed out on SS the first time around it makes perfect sense to grab him now. But a 90’s character just isn’t vintage to me. Yes, it is cool. No, it isn’t vintage.

    *sighs*

Look, before you all attack me for being a mean-spirited stick-in-the-mud, as always I’m not trying to discourage anyone from buying figures they are excited about. Moreover I’m not trying to shame the excitement in general. We all do it, we all have it, and it’s why we all come to a site like this to see the latest on what’s coming our way.

But i do encourage everyone to be patient on this vintage wave – 5 out of the prior 6 figures are readily available for far less than their intended msrp, which is highly inflated IMO.

Sure, the packaging is cool, but is nostalgia really something that should be used to capitalize on your hard-earned cash? I personally don’t think so.

A wise fictional man once said:

“Nostalgia is truly one of the great human weaknesses…second only to the neck.”

    HAPPY HUNTING

    • Well said, capt! Well said.
      Quite right.
      Vintage should be vintage.
Tchalla should have a short cape, satchel, open-face cowl(batman-esque)head and unmasked head. Comic not mcu style.
      😎Shalom

    • Who gives a shit about your opinion? I, for one, will have 2 Scarlet Spiders. Open and sealed. Why? Because the figure is a GREAT upgrade. The red is darker and those web shooters are tits!

  9. Isn’t the toy biz blue wasp variant a huge collectable worth alot? And it’s hidoues, this wasp is stunning lol.

  10. I’m going to put the blonde Ben Reilly head on the Fantastic Four, Reed body and make him my Johnny Storm. I’m not good at customizing, so this is decent enough for me to pass as Johnny.

  11. Here’s hoping that the lack of Mutants in this assortment means that the X Men will be getting their own vintage line as well.
