Kotobukiya surprised the collecting sphere at New York Toy Fair 2019 in February when they launched their new line of high-quality, high-priced Marvel ARTFX+ Premier statues with four characters right out of the gate. They’ve been going strong with the line since, with no signs of slowing down. And at SDCC 2019, they debuted their next four entries: ARTFX Premier Loki, Black Panther, Black Widow and… Cosmic Ghost Rider!?
I’ve been highly skeptical of Kotobukiya’s 1:10 Scale, $150 and up ARTFX Premier line of statues, but Koto is definitely starting to slowly but surely wear me down. I didn’t feel much temptation to snap up any of their first five entries in their Avengers Premier lineup, but that Doctor Strange they showed earlier caught my attention.
And with this latest batch of new reveals at Comic Con, they’re got guaranteed incoming dollars from me for the first time for this series!
If there’s one modern Avengers character Koto could have picked to ensure some bucks from me, it’s definitely the young adult version of Loki. The details on this PVC are off-the-charts awesome, and it’s terrific to see a version of this character rarely merchandised getting some love here.
Sometimes the “God of Lies” and sometimes the “God of Stories”, I’m a big fan of the modern interpretation of Loki. He got his own ongoing comic book series and his first ARTFX+ Statue this week. Way to go, Loki!
The next two reveals are a bit more mundane: ARTFX Premier Black Panther and Black Widow. We’ve had copious amounts of T’Challa merch over the last year and a half because of the Black Panther movie, and consequently I’m a little more indifferent to the new Premier Black Panther than I otherwise might be.
Last year’s ARTFX+ Black Panther didn’t look all that dissimilar from the new version, and it also retailed for about half the cost of what the one debuting at SDCC will. An okay addition to the lineup, but a pass for me for sure.
Black Widow isn’t exactly thrilling me either. She looks “fine”—and is clearly an improvement over the last Natasha that Koto produced over half a decade ago—but her pose feels a bit too passive and dull to me.
The last of the new reveals, however, is one nobody is going to find dull. For whatever reason, Kotobukiya has chosen to complete the modern Avengers ARTFX Premier Statue series not with the Robbie Reyes version of the character (who is actually on the Avengers team), but with the Frank Castle COSMIC GHOST RIDER. What the—?!
This is a humongous head-scratcher as far as organically building the actual Avengers team this series is based on goes, but there’s no denying the popularity and buzz for Cosmic Ghost Rider. This is easily the most eye-grabbing Marvel PVC figure that Kotobukiya has designed in quite some time, and it very well may be the biggest sales star of all the reveals.
The first six Kotobukiya ARTFX Premier Statues are available for order online now, with these latest four additions expected to be available for pre-orders within the next month or so. I’ll send out alerts via the Marvel Toy News social media once these are ready to launch for those who are interested.
What do you think of this new quartet of Koto Premier ARTFX+ PVC statues, Marvel collectors? Are you excited by fresh faces like Loki and Cosmic Ghost Rider, and what family of Marvel characters would you like to see Kotobukiya move on to next?
Cosmic Ghost Rider for the win! Im all over that
