Up until now, I’ve had a futile hope that the Funko Hikari Spider-Man series of vinyl sofubi figures would be a finite collection, easily completed by purchasing the half-dozen Spider-Man Hikari figures that debuted at SDCC 2014. After all, all four of the Funko Spider-Man Hikaris that have been released/announced for purchase up until now have been ones that premiered at SDCC. Unfortunately for our shelf space and our wallets, the fifth Spidey was announced today, and it’s one we’ve never seen before–the Funko Hikari Distressed Spider-Man is now up for order!

Last month, unpainted prototypes surfaced for a pair of previously unannounced Funko POP Vinyls figures that made me think that a Funko Spider-Man POP! Vinyls wave was in our near-future. And as it so happens, I was right–Funko officially announced a quartet of new 2015 Funko Marvel POP! Vinyls today! Of course, there is a little twist. See, this is going to be an exclusive wave of Funko POP Vinyls, and it’s not going to one of the usual retailer suspects like Target or Walmart: it’s the Walgreens Exclusive Funko Spider-Man 2099, Venom, Punisher, and Black Suit Spider-Man POP Vinyls!

If there’s one thing out there that adult collectors love, it’s nonsensical variants of main characters like Spider-Man and Batman (right…?). Funko already conquered Batman fans’ wallets with a double-digit number of Funko Hikari Batman vinyl figure variants, and now they’re preparing to unleash their fourth Funko Hikari Spider-Man!

The colors don’t make much sense canonically, but he’s limited to just 500 pieces worldwide–the Funko Hikari Metal Mix Spider-Man figure is now up for order!

Yesterday, Gentle Giant Ltd. unexpectedly announced a new line of 1/6th scale Jumbo Marvel Secret Wars action figures are on the way in 2015. That was a surprise announcement in and of itself, but I was even less prepared for the primarily negative response I’ve heard from collectors about the line and its price. The first figure in the line, the 12″ Jumbo Secret Wars Black Costume Spider-Man is now up for order–but is he worth 80 to 90 bucks? Here’s my thoughts…

Yeah, I know–who doesn’t have a license to make Marvel figures these days, right? But these aren’t just any figures–they’re throwback jumbo 12″ figures based off of the vintage Marvel Secret Wars figures from 1984! And the first two figures coming our way will be Jumbo Black Costume Spider-Man and Hobgoblin!

If being a hardcore collector is akin to being an addict (and believe me, it sometimes feels like it is), then the latest form of “crack” to have me in its thralls is called “Funko Hikari”. The Japanese-inspired Funko Hikari Sofubi vinyl figures are way bigger and way more limited than Funko POP! Vinyls (with a way bigger price-tag to match). While Hikari only started to be released this summer, it’s definitely starting to catch on for Funko, and it’s about to become a whole lot more relevant for Marvel collectors, as the first Marvel Hikari was just released this month: Dangerous Spider-Man! Is this Spidey worth the “dangerous” investment he requires in both price and shelf space…?

Just one week after their LE 1000 Dangerous Spider-Man Hikari figure went up for order, another of the Funko Hikari Spider-Man vinyl figures has appeared for sale! For the moment you’ve got to order from Australia if you want this one, but I have a hunch that the Funko Hikari New Dimension Spider-Man vinyl figure will be making his American debut shortly…

I love a good action figure repaint as much as the next guy, especially when it’s a well-done and fan-requested version of a character that collectors have been asking for. In the case of statues that cost hundreds of dollars, I’m a bit more picky.

So while I’m not jumping for joy at the existence of a red-and-black J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man, I totally respect those excited for this repaint: the Sideshow Classic Spider-Man Comiquette is now up for order!

NYCC 2014 Marvel Play Arts Kai Spider-Man Announced!

If I wasn’t expecting Square-Enix to debut a Marvel Play Arts Kai variant figures line at New York Comic Con 2014 by unexpectedly showing off the Play Arts Kai Iron Man figure (and I was not), then I definitely wasn’t expecting the second figure from the line to be revealed as well.

Square-Enix oftentimes likes to take their dear sweet time, but I guess they were just too excited about Play Arts Kai Spider-Man to wait!

Ordinarily, I absolutely can’t stand ruthless, pure evil villains that have no mercy and no soul. Those types of villainous characters typically evoke no sympathy at all and are flat-out boring to read about. Usually. But there’s an exception to every rule–and in this case, his name is Carnage! The 90’s are back in style, and Carnage is finally getting more long-deserved merch in 2015. Marvel Vinylmation Green Goblin & Mary Jane Variants Found!

In the early days of the Disney Vinylmation figures line, the rarest blind-box figures out there were the Vinylmation Mystery Chasers that were packed at one-per-case. But things have changes in the last few years, and now there’s something even rarer: Vinylmation variants. Packed at far less than one per case, the Marvel Vinylmation variants from Series 1 of Phasing Vision and Bearded Thor have long been the most valuable Vinylmation Marvel figures. They now have some competition, though–Vinylmation Green Goblin and Mary Jane variants have now appeared and are selling for $150-$300 each!
