When Disney announced the lineup of figures in the Disney Vinylmation Marvel Series 2 Spider-Man wave last month, visions immediately began to dance in collectors’ heads of what spectacular, beloved character would be the “mystery chaser” that wouldn’t be revealed until the cases were released at the Disney Parks and Disney Stores. The most popular theories were for a Vinylmation Carnage, Gwen Stacy or Doctor Octopus chaser. Well, the Vinylmation Spider-Man series was officially released yesterday, and now we know the chaser’s identity. Though the immediate response has been disappointment, the Marvel Vinylmation Kingpin Chaser has been revealed!
The Marvel Vinylmation Spider-Man series of blind boxes was released yesterday to much more buzz and fanfare than most blind-box Disney Vinylmation series that have been released in 2014. While Vinylmation’s popularity has cooled considerably this year, there are still plenty of hardcore Disney Vinylmation collectors out there, and they were very hot for the much-anticipated Disney Vinylmation Series 2.
What Vinylmation collectors are not so giddy about is the character Disney selected as the Spider-Man Vinylmation Chaser figure: Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime. As the Vinylmation Mystery Chaser of any series is often expected to be the best design or most exciting figure in the series, many vinyl collectors were rather put off by the chaser being a non-powered fat man with a cane.
Even so, the Kingpin is not a particularly visually-exciting character, and definitely among the most plain and boring Marvel Vinylmation designs ever created, so I can sympathize with all the Vinylmation Marvel Series collectors out there who are disappointed in the selection of the Kingpin.
Despite not being all that beloved of a mystery chaser, the one-per-case Vinylmation Kingpin Chaser is already selling (actually selling, not just being listed) for $50-$70 on the aftermarket. I would imagine that this particular figure will cool down in price as more people pull the Kingpin Vinylmation chaser from blind boxes, but it’s still a very impressive opening price for a figure that there’s been quite a bit of grumbling about.
I’m helpless to resist Vinylmation Marvel figures, so I already ordered a case of the Marvel Vinylmation Spider-Man Series online. Anyone else planning to seek out the Kingpin chaser, or any of the other figures that make up the Disney Vinylmation Marvel Spider-Man series?
