X-Force Marvel Legends Cannonball REVIEW & Photos

While the inaugural Marvel Legends X-Force series has several heavy-hitters like Mr. Sinister and Nightcrawler that I’ll be reviewing soon enough, today I want to focus on what’s almost certainly the most controversial ML figure this year. “Controversial” might sound a little dramatic for a toy, but there has been a lot of discussion of this action figure. You can get the new X-Force Marvel Legends Cannonball figure for about 20 bucks shipped right now—but should you?

Review Marvel Legends Cannonball Figure X-Force

When Hasbro decided to do a new Marvel Legends sub-line themed around X-Force they just had to include some classic members of the team roster in the lineup, otherwise things were going to feel pretty bizarre.

And so, joining characters like Guardian, Wendigo and Sinister (whose connections to X-Force are tenuous at best), we get two original members of the team: Cannonball and Boom Boom!

Hasbro preciously did an awful 6” Cannonball in a two-pack with Domino in 2010, but that figure was thin to the point of being emaciated and had a rubber jacket that’s disintegrated for most in under a decade. Can this new X-Force Legends Cannonball jump that very low bar…?

Marvel Legends Cannonball Figure Unboxing & ReviewSurprisingly, the answer is not an unquestionable “Yes”. Hasbro made some debatable design choices for this figure that really hold it back from reaching the modern high standards of ML.

Cannonball Marvel Legends X-Force Series ReviewLet’s discuss the legless elephant in the room: this Cannonball Legends figure ain’t got no legs. Unlike the 2010 two-pack figure that came with legs and no blast effect, this time we get a blasting Cannonball six inch figure with no legs. As you might imagine, the collecting sphere has not been kind regarding this design choice.

Close-Up of Blast Effect on Cannonball Marvel Legends FigureAt a glance and in a vacuum, I really like the rocketing energy effect itself. The billowing energy sculpted into the effect looks right-on to me from the comics, and the semi-translucent orange-to-yellow gradient on the energy looks phenomenal.

X-Force Legends Cannonball vs. Wolverine 2019 HasbroUnfortunately, the energy going straight up is a major limiter. Sam Guthrie doesn’t just hover in the air, so this figure is basically locked in to being blasting straight up vertically. I had some smiles flying Cannonball around by hand at horizontal and diagonal trajectories, but when on a shelf there’s no way to achieve that without rigging up some way to hold the toy up.

Back of X-Force Series Marvel Legends Cannonball 6" Action FigureIncluding some sort of flight stand or even a pivot point on the blast effect could have significantly improved the displayability for this action figure, but sadly there’s nothing like that included here.

X-Force Cannonball 6" Figure Marvel Legends Hasbro 2019Further complicating matters is the fact that the jacket add-on piece to the upper body inhibits the shoulder hinge, so it’s impossible to have Cannonball’s arms fully extended going straight up in the manner that I think they’d look most natural on this action figure given the forced static vertical blasting pose.

Box Back X-Force Marvel Legends Cannonball

Ultimately, this figure has just 13 points of articulation, which is awful for a modern Hasbro Marvel Legends figure:

  • Ball-Hinge Neck and Shoulders
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists
  • Ab Crunch
  • Double-Hinge Elbows
  • Swivel Biceps
  • Swivel “Waist”/Effects Piece

Cannonball Marvel Legends Six Inch FigureIt probably sounds like a straight-up hate this figure, but that’s actually not true. I’m a New Mutants fanboy 4 life, so I’ve got a personal bias towards this figure to begin with. I think this is a great representation of how Cannonball looked in the early issues of X-Force, with a solid likeness in the Sam Guthrie portrait and a wonderful paint wash on his hair.

Cannonball Legends 6" Figure X-Force Wendigo SeriesThe upper part of the shirt looks authentic, and the sculpting and texture of the purple jacket (which is an add-on overlay piece) is nice work. The add-on forearm portion of the gloves is well-done as well—from an accuracy perspective, the upper body on this figure is a winner. It’s just a shame that there’s so very little you can do with him.

Marvel Legends 2019 Cannonball ReviewOverall: Rather than soaring for the heavens, this new take on Sam Guthrie falls flat on his face in a lot of ways. The blast effect lower body looks awkward going straight up with the whole figure only being slightly taller than most other modern Marvel Legends, and the jacket overlay hinders the range of motion on the shoulders in a disappointing way.

The color gradient on the blasting effect looks awesome and the sculpting on the upper body of Marvel Legends Cannonball is also great, but this figure’s design makes it next to impossible to pose in a fun way that doesn’t feel out of place. I had fun zooming Sam around outside for some of the review photos, but otherwise this is an overall disappointing toy that many collectors may just purchase to complete their Wendigo Build-A-Figure.

X-Force Marvel Legends Cannonball REVIEW & Photos — 19 Comments

  1. X-Force was one of my favorite teams reading comics. Infinity Gauntlet #3 is when I first started reading comics, and around that time I also picked up a New Warriors annual. I was trying to learn about as many heroes early on, and this annual had the New Warriors go up against X-Force.

I’m not a big fan of Cannonball without his legs. They should have made him the BAF, and used Wendigo for the next series, which I believe is another Deadpool wave? Then they could have included legs that could be undone from the waist to switch out for the blast effect. Mattel and the Four Horseman did this kind of design with a Masters of the Universe King Hiss figure, swapping the human form for the snake form.

I know it’s a smaller figure, but Chopper from Star Wars the Black Series had a blast effect included with him, along with some extra articulation inside his dome with his little hands and “torch” device in the middle. Chopper even came with an extra leg, that really wasn’t necessary, but appreciated. I just think they could have done both for Cannonball to satisfy everyone. Heck, they even could have sold him as an 80th Anniversary figure, or seperately, like Archangel, with a bit higher price. I’m only assuming we’ll eventually see another figure of him complete with legs.

  2. C- is very generous.

Never in my 15 plus year history of collecting Marvel Legends and DC Universe Classics action figures have I wanted to actually tract someone down and punch them in the face (repeatedly) for green lighting an action figure before.

    Not once.

    Until now.

Had I attended SDCC I would undoubtedly have been arrested.

“Hatred” is not a strong enough word for what I feel for this stupid blast effect.

Hasbro. You. Did. Not. Give. Cannonball. Legs. WTactualF is wrong with you people?

    • I might have been a little overly generous, I admit. I toyed with a D+ for Cannonball, but ultimately he’s a character I have a bias towards and I liked all the sculpting work and paint apps, so he got a higher score than he otherwise really might have deserved.

  3. Anyone know if the blast effect is easily detachable? This would clearly show that Hasbro plans on packing his legs in with another X-Force figure in the future (I hope)

    • The blast piece pops right off. Like the plan all along was for it to include interchangeable legs…

  4. Bad enough that I’m not paying twenty bucks for what is basically a mini-statue with limited articulation, but I’m sick of head sculpts with angry looks and gritted teeth. This is easily the worst figure of the year, if not the whole line.

  5. I saw a video on YouTube where they used Paladin’s legs to fix this problem. A fairly easy looking repaint (if you are into repainting at all) was all it took. It went into place looking great, but the legs were a bit loose because the ball didn’t fit snugly into the Cannonball hole.

This figure didn’t have to be so ridiculous. They have packaged as much plastic as would be required with other figures before. This was just a choice to cheap out on us. It’s not an action figure. It’s a sculpture that can barely move.

It should also be mentioned that the size of the blast effect isn’t even large enough to encompass the area his legs would take up. He doesn’t lose his legs when he blasts. They should still be able to fit into that effect piece.

Just a poor job done on a figure a lot of people wanted done well. I give it an F for even existing in this form.

  6. This is one of those cases where I feel like if they *did* just give him legs everyone would cry foul for some effects parts

    • Yeah literally no one would cry that Hasbro gave us a complete figure. That’s fwoosh-Hasbro-suck-up talk.

      • Agreed. No one cares half as much about missed opportunities on effects as they do on incomplete figures. Third party/custom effects are simpler, easy to find or make, and more universal than expecting people to do custom legs. Sad justification anyway as the whole price-out excuse is sheer garbage. I literally posted in the article revealing this figure how Hasbro turned a profit last year nearly entirely based on the sale of Marvel licensed products.

A full figure with an interchangeable (and to Droppo’s point, LARGER) blast effect and small BAF part is not priced out. It should be what we expect. Hasbro is very smart about their cash-grabs. This is one of them – plain and simple. Take a beloved character that is long overdue for an update, use the character’s power set to justify giving us less than we deserve from a figure. Profit. (*see single hinged elbows on females and large male characters, *see changing base-bodies from time of reveal to release, *see adding bonus pieces in with other figures, *see making the same 6 characters in 50 different outfits before making some major 2nd tier characters).

        A few more gripes:

Hasbro couldn’t have gone with the bullseye buck for the torso with a relatively trim character like Cannonball? Then at least we’d have butterfly joints. Make the coat from a more flexible rubbery plastic or, hell, give us a second vest piece that allow for different range.

They couldn’t have done the brown accents on the shoulders? Again, you had half a character to detail and you still couldn’t get it right?

How about a second head? Goggles down perhaps? Oh, I guess that would have been “too expensive”?

This whole figure pisses me off.

  7. This seems like the first time in a long time where all figures in series were packed with a BAF piece. They should have added another figure so they could have packed Cannonball with legs and the blast effect. Warpath is so easy to do that they made one for Toys R Us exclusive 10 years ago, and you know they only do easy characters for exclusives.

    • The M’Baku wave from the beginning of this year had all figures packed with a BAF piece as well. So did Monster Venom wave from last year. So did Deadpool wave 2 / Sauron wave from last year. So its really not all that uncommon.

  8. ironically, Sam is the only figure from this wave i haven’t spotted in the wild yet. Granted, i’ve only seen 1 case overall that target put out over the course of a couple of days.

Holding off on this guy, I assume with all the complaints he’ll be pegwarming for sure and I do want to complete Wendigo at some point.

    • bashpics99 (or anyone else interested), I have almost all of the Wendigo BAF pieces (missing head from Wolverine and leg from Sinister). I am willing to sell it.

  9. I have a feeling we’ll get a repackaged Cannonball at some point with legs by Hasbro as a means to sucker more money out of collectors. I just don’t expect them to pass up an easy money grab like that.
But yeah, lazy AF with this figure. No excuses whatsoever. Why they couldn’t have upped the price and included a pair of legs I don’t know. Easy fix right there.

  10. I’m wondering if people will make the same complaints when we get a bonebreaker figure.

  11. With so many solid Legends figures that were released this year, we were bound to get a complete “floater in the toilet” figure like this. Of this wave I only have Guardian and Nightcrawler and am on the fence about building Wendigo.

Speaking of floaters, I just scored the entire Captain Marvel wave for $5 per figure from GameStop and even picked up the MCU Ronan for the same price. I don’t reckon this Wendigo wave will ever warrant such a fire sale but, if it does, sold!

  12. They could have given him legs and added two plastic blast pieces that, when his legs are down and straight, would clip on around his legs like a shell. That would give a complete figure to pose, while being able to then clip on the desired blast effect when desired.
