Although we’ve been waiting for Marvel to officially announce the Funko Marvel SDCC 2014 exclusives, I surmised instantly what they were going to be based off of the vague hints that Funko posted many weeks ago. One of the hints indicated there would be a San Diego Comic Con 2014 exclusive Marvel Mystery Minis set of twelve figures–and lo and behold, that’s exactly what it is! But while most Funko Comic Con exclusives turn out to be straight-up repaints, Funko has surprised us by including some brand new molds unexpectedly as part of the 2014 SDCC Exclusive set!
While I was expecting a straight-up series of repainted costumed, Funko has really thrown me for a loop by including new molds in the series. While there are zero new characters in this set that weren’t in the Funko Marvel Series 1 Mystery Minis blind box cases, there are four brand new sculpts mixed into the 2014 SDCC Marvel Mystery Minis Series.
The 2014 San Diego Comic Con Marvel Mystery Minis Figures Series will include:
- Metallic Hulk (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Hulk [Appears to be the mass release version] — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Dark Phoenix –Red Costume (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Glow in the Dark Phoenix — White Costume (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Spider-Man (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Metallic Spider-Man (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Metallic Ultron (New Sculpt) — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Blue X-Men Costume Deadpool — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Metallic X-Force Deadpool — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Deadpool (Red) [Appears to be the mass release version] — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Thanos [Appears to be the mass release version] — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
- Thor [Appears to be the mass release version] — 1 Per Case of 12 Blind Boxes
I’m actually very confused about the inclusion of Red Deadpool, Thanos, Thor and Hulk, as those four figures appear to be straight repacks of the figures from Marvel Mystery Minis Series 1. Does anyone see any differences between the SDCC 2014 Mystery Minis and the regular Mystery Minis of those characters…? I sure don’t.
If one-third of the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Mystery Minis set consists of repacks from the mass release series, that’s going to be a really lame tactic on Funko’s part. I guess we’ll have to wait for official confirmation on this from Funko themselves.
The San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive Marvel Mystery Minis will be sold both as individual blind boxes ($7 each) and as entire case sets ($84 for a case of all 12) at SDCC 2014 later on this month. I’ll post an update when more specifics are revealed about what appear to be repeats in the case, and you can ‘Like’ Marvel Toy News on Facebook to have news and photos sent straight to your Facebook Newsfeed.
What do you think of the first-ever Marvel Mystery Minis SDCC exclusives, Marvel collectors? Are you excited to get new versions of previously-released characters, or are you satisfied with the Marvel Mystery Mini figures that you already have of these same characters?
So lame to have repeating characters. That’s just one thing. It’s even more offending when it’s turning chases into commons. Now all those people who went after the 1/144 red Deadpools and the 1/72 Thanos are screwed. Sad panda.
I found an almost complete case at Barnes and Noble today! I got all but Ultron and Thanos. All the ones I got were new sculpts with the exception of the red Deadpool, but he is a metallic paint so it’s still not a repack.
This set needs Emma Frost really….
