Gentle Giant Ltd. had a couple of surprises at New York Toy Fair 2018 last month (not least of which the fact that they attended the event for the first time in quite a while). Primarily of interest to Marvel collectors, however, has to be the fact that Gentle Giant premiered not one, not two, not three, but four new Wolverine statues at the show! The Marvel Collectors Gallery Brown Costume Wolverine Statue is now up for order! Let’s take a look…
I was taken completely off-guard by the foursome of Logan statues on display at the 2018 Toy Fair in New York City, and while I don’t get every release in Gentle Giant’s Marvel Collectors Gallery 1:8 line, I’m definitely going to have to make space for a Logan (or two).
The four eras of Wolverine that will be getting the Gentle Giant treatment this year are:
- First Appearance Wolverine
- 1980s Brown Costume Wolverine
- Tiger Stripe Wolverine
- Old Man Logan
The first release in the series is going to be the 80s Wolverine, which is probably a good choice since that brown costume doesn’t get as much love as the yellow costumes do. Gentle Giant will also get the added benefit of beating Diamond Select Toys to the punch with the Marvel Gallery Brown Costume Wolverine PVC statue coming up later this year.
This particular statue is based off one of the covers to Old Man Logan #22, but it looks plenty classic enough to be used as a plain old Brown Costume Wolverine Statue in one’s collection.
As in the cover artwork, Logan has his mask pulled back (unlike either of the two yellow costume Wolverine variants). I think the Logan portrait is very nice for the 1/8 scale, although I imagine some folks will hate that there’s not an alternate masked head for this statue.
From what I was told at Toy Fair, we should see the remaining resin Wolverine variants sprinkled throughout the rest of the year either every month or every other month, so as not to bankrupt X-Men collectors all at once. Good move!
The Gentle Giant Wolverine Brown Costume Statue is now up for order, and is scheduled to be released in Q3 2018. BBTS has the best price I’ve seen around for this guy, with $16 off the MSRP (bringing it down to a reasonable $144). EE is charging the full $159.99, but is offering free shipping and a 110% price-match guarantee. I opted for BBTS myself in this instance.
What do you think of the first release in the Marvel Collector Gallery Wolverine statues series (and the series as a whole), Marvel collectors? Are you thinking about picking up any of these “Wolverine Through The Ages” statues? And for that matter, is anyone feeling compelled to pick up all four?
