Diamond Select Toys brought a smaller than usual assemblage of new Marvel collectibles to New York Comic Con 2024, so I was a mite worried we wouldn’t get a good round of DST solicitations this month. The first time I saw Hellverine, I thought it was yet another half-assed entry in the continuing modern trend of mash-up characters. There’s no doubt that Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men comic books run was a watershed moment for the merry mutants, and John Cassaday’s costume designs for the x-Men have had enduring popularity as a result. So even though Toybiz released a very nice Astonishing Wolverine in 2005, it’s no shocker to see Hasbro upgrading that iteration of Logan in the 85th Anniversary Marvel Legends series during Wolverine’s own 50th anniversary. Hasbro brought their A-game to this week’s new Hasbro Pulse Marvel Legends stream of figure reveals, but the most immediate ones were for figures semi-confirmed by leaked prototypes that surfaced over the last few weeks. Last week, Hasbro celebrated Wolverine’s 50th Anniversary with new 6” figures of Lady Mandarin Psylocke and Ninja Wolverine, and this week they’re opening up pre-orders for a two-pack based on another Chris Claremont Wolverine classic: Marvel Legends Patch and Joe Fixit! “Wild and crazy” as descriptors of what happened to Psylocke in the last years of Chris Claremont’s legendary run on Uncanny X-Men. After being reborn, mind wiped, ethnically changed and soul swapped, Betsy briefly became the Mandarin’s assassin, Lady Mandarin. (I swear it reads better than it summarizes.) As Lady Mandarin, Psylocke battled Wolverine (in his “ninja” attire), until Logan defeated Psylocke and restored her free will.
