From Mantis to Nebula to Okoye to Valkyrie, supporting female MCU superheroes tend to get shafted when it comes to Hot Toys sixth scale figures. That’s why it came as a massive surprise when Hot Toys had a 1/6 Black Panther Shuri Movie Masterpiece Series figure front and center at their SDCC 2018 booth. We’ve had plenty of MMS figures shown over the years and never actually created, but Black Panther’s sister won’t suffer that fate: the Hot Toys Shuri figure goes up for order this afternoon (and Hot Toys even has a Wakandan Throne lined up to roll out beside her)!
While T’Challa’s sister didn’t get a ton of screen-time in the Black Panther movie, an unexpected number of people came away saying that she was their favorite character in the film.
In response to all the positive buzz, Hasbro has a Marvel Legends movie figure of T’Challa’s fast-tracked for 2019, DST created a Marvel Gallery PVC statue, a solo Shuri comic book series is on the way this fall, and now Shuri is getting her first high-end collectible ever from Hot Toys!
Shuri hasn’t exactly spent a ton of time in her combat costume in the MCU just yet, but this is obviously the most “toyetic” look for the character.
The Letitia Wright portrait on this figure is frankly astonishing. Of everything that Hot Toys showed at SDCC 2018, this Shuri Head sculpt might have been the single thing at their booth that impressed me the most. Incredible work!
It looks like Hot Toys is keeping it simple with Shuri, as her only accessories will be a pair of light-up Wakandan Gauntlets, some interchangeable hands, a spear and a figure stand. This is a smart move—keep the base figure awesome, the accessories the essential ones only, and most importantly keep the price down. I cannot stress how important it is to keep prices reasonable, unlike the high-end statue market where prices keep getting higher and higher.
Much like the character in the Black Panther movie, I’m expecting that HT may have another sleeper hit on their hands with this 12” scale Shuri figure (she’s actually authentically sized to about 11.5” tall).
There’s one other Black Panther Hot Toys item set for pre-order this week, but this is an uncommon instance where it’s not a figure at all—it’s an accessory! After being debuted at San Diego Comic Con 2018, the Hot Toys Black Panther Wakandan Throne is officially going to be produced and sold!
Hot Toys has a history of showing off environmental pieces and accessories and never actually selling them at all (Man, I want that Millennium Falcon cockpit), but the Black Panther Throne won’t suffer that same fate.
The Wakandan Throne is about 13” tall and features a quite impressive deco for both the wooden and metallic parts of the throne. There’s apparently no combo pack with a figure available this time, which hopefully means the price on this diorama accessory won’t be astronomical. We’ll find out once the pre-order launches later today.
The Hot Toys Shuri sixth scale figure and the Black Panther Wakandan Throne are expected to go up for order this afternoon, with an anticipated release date in mid-2019. Both of these seem like the type of niche items that I would expect to see get underproduced (like that Hot Toys Yondu figure selling for crazy money now on the aftermarket), and I’d particularly recommend POing Shuri if you think you’ll definitely want her figure.
Unless Hot Toys is planning to surprise-drop an Okoye figure to kick off a high-end set of Dora Milaje, these are likely to be the last items released in the Black Panther MMS series for the first movie. What do you think of their new Wakandan Throne and Shuri 1/6 figure, as well as Hot Toys’ Black Panther efforts as a whole, Marvel collectors? Have you ordered or will you be picking up any (or all) of these high-end collectibles?
