REVIEW: Marvel Legends Magneto X-Men Apocalypse Series

It’s a quiet day on the news front, which makes it the perfect time to dip back into my big bag of unreviewed action figures. So today, I’m continuing onward with a look at another figure in the X-Men Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series. The X-Men Marvel Legends Magneto figure was one of the most-anticipated figures when he was first announced, but does he live up to expectations now that he’s been released and is available for ordering? Here’s my ML Magneto review…

X-Men Marvel Legends Magneto Figure Review

While the classic red and purple costume Magneto is by far the most iconic and recognizable look for the character, toy companies can’t always rehash the same character in the same costume over and over.

And so, when word leaked that Hasbro was working on a new 6” Magneto figure for this year’s Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series, I was hoping it would be a modern white costume version (a la Puzzle Quest). It’s not, but it is the modern Black and Red Costume Mags!

Box Back ML Magneto X-Men Apocalypse Series FigureIt’s an all-new version that Hasbro has never done before in any size—but is it any good?

X-Men Legends Magneto Figure PackagedWell… in this case, I’m not exactly blown away. I typically really enjoy modern version character action figures, but I just don’t care for most of the elements of this particular figure.

Back of Marvel Legends 2018 Magneto Six Inch FigureThere are a couple aspects about this figure that are just downright aggravating, and Magneto’s cape is tops on that list.

Rubbery Peg on Marvel Legends X-Men Magneto CapeThe plastic used for the cape feels really cheap and rubbery, and it doesn’t play nice with the peg design on the cape at all. The peg just is not produced in such a way where it will ever solidly slot firmly into place (at least on mine), so the cape just flops around endlessly.

Hasbro X-Men Marvel Legends Magneto Action Figure without HelmetLikewise, the pegs on the clasp of the cape that hold the shoulder pads on pop off constantly and are really frustrating. The shoulder pads also can get in the way of raising Erik’s arms fully and posing them.

Unmasked Magneto Head on Marvel Legends Apocaylpse Series Magneto 6" FigureI hugely appreciate that Hasbro gave us switch-out parts for this Magneto figure—but I just don’t care for any of them. It doesn’t make sense to me for Magneto to only come with closed fists for his non-effects hands (time for a street fight with Charles, maybe?), and I think the alternate head looks more like Beethoven than Erik Lehnsherr.

Magneto Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Figure and AccessoriesI always like the inclusion of an extra head, but the unhelmeted Magneto head included here just looks awkward to me on this body.

Close-Up of Marvel Legends Magneto Apocalypse Series FigureThe helmeted Head is easily the superior of the two, and just having it attached makes the whole toy look better as a package overall. The angular decoration on the helmet and Erik’s whited-out eyes give this portrait a much more imposing attitude. I’ll never be displaying this with the unhelmeted head after this review.

Lightning Effects Pieces with Hasbro Magneto Action FigureMagneto gets the same new “lightning” effects pieces as the Storm figure I reviewed earlier this month. The purple effects are as floppy, loose and impossible to keep in place on Magneto as they were with Storm, if not worse. I’m not sure Erik’s magnetic abilities lend themselves well to being illustrated by lightning-shaped effects at all, and the wobbly nature of these doesn’t impress.

Side View of ML Magneto Hasbro 6" Figure Black CostumeThe paint job on the figure is simplistic, as it should be based on the design of this costume. Basically, it’s just some red lines on the black body. The paint applications themselves are a little sloppy with red splotches going outside the lines in some areas, but the costume is so dark overall that you don’t really notice.

Marvel Legends Magneto Review X-Men Apocalypse SeriesArticulation-wise, there aren’t any surprise, as we’ve seen this mold and its super-articulation scheme before:

  • Ball-Hinge Head and Shoulders
  • Ball Hips
  • Double-Hinge Knees and Elbows
  • Upper Torso Ab Crunch
  • Swivel Waist Thighs Boots Biceps
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists
  • Hinged Ankles with Rockers

2018 Marvel Legends X-Men Magneto Action Figure ReviewWhile the cape gets in the way of a lot of dynamic posing (which is especially annoying since it won’t even stay attached properly), Magneto is rarely the most action-oriented dude in the room. The articulation set is nothing fresh or compelling here, but it’s perfectly adequate.

Magneto Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Figure Unhelmeted HeadOverall: While I actually really dig both of the Marvel NOW Magneto costumes, this Magneto Marvel Legends figure comes off feeling clumsy and awkward to me. The execution of the cape is poor, falling out of place and coming apart easily. The magnetic effects pieces are loose and droopy, and the fistfight non-effects hands don’t make much sense.

And although the paint and articulation on this figure are solid, I don’t like the unmasked Magneto portrait at all. Hasbro has released many stellar figures thus far in 2018, but the new X-Men Legends Magneto figure is merely “okay” in my book. A good idea, but with disappointing execution.

REVIEW: Marvel Legends Magneto X-Men Apocalypse Series — 12 Comments

  1. I agree whole-heartedly. If they had given us the Black/White costume from his solo series I would give it more of a benefit of the doubt but with the IvX look I am looking to replace it as soon as I can.

  2. There’s a general ugliness to this figure that I’m not used to in Marvel Legends. The worst thing about the unhelmeted head to me is how the hair looks like it’s a separate piece from the rest of his head. Like it’s a hair helmet. I was really happy to get this figure because I had no Magneto figure at all, and now I do. But I’m looking forward to a new classic look Magneto and cross my fingers they put some more effort into it. Or maybe there was effort but not talent. Whatever went wrong on this figure needs to be corrected before it infects any other Marvel Legends figures. It’s less than a C- to me, even though, like I said, I was glad to get it just to fill that slot in my collection that was missing Magneto. He’s kind of important.

  3. -I would have preferred a different costume. I understand they were always going to do a modern one before the classic one, but they might’ve chosen the worst one. His white/black Marvel NOW looks are more iconic, and this isn’t his current costume anymore. The design just reminds me of Scott’s Marvel NOW redesign, which looks good on him but poor here.

-I think they were going for a Jim Lee style unmasked head, which might explain the huge hair. Execution leaves a lot to be desired.

-They’ve reused the bubble effects a zillion times (to some people’s disdain), and I always thought they’d be perfect for Magneto. And here we are, with lightning. I guess Wonder Man or Havok’s effects can be used, depending on your preference.

-I would’ve been okay with two open hands and two fists, one powered up and one depowered of each. But maybe we’ll see some variation with future Magnetos, allowing for some swaps.

Honestly a lot of this figure seems like reuse waiting to happen for the perfect classic Magneto. Repaint the Spider UK body, new forearms and boots, use Vulture wave Beetle’s belt/butt, and voila. You can even reuse the helmet and unhelmeted heads here, and the hands. Maybe even the cape.

  4. Though I love marvel legends, I am so tired of crappy capes. Way too many of the figs with capes are just hampered by them. They either don’t allow the fig to move or the cape and accoutrements pop out of the usually horribly designed peg and hole. Or… in many cases, both things.

I know a lot of people like the look of sculpted capes, but I’ve said it since ML line started back with ToyBiz, cloth capes are always better. They hang well, they allow movement, and usually you can attach them better as they don’t need to be so easily removed since the cloth allows the fig to fully pose.

I carry this opinion into any drapery clothing of any kind. Long coats, skirted legs, even loin cloths. Cloth has been used to great effect in action figures dating back to the 60s, I think we could do that with these. Hell even ML has occasionally dabbled with cloth lab coats and unusual capes like on Storm.

I find the plastic/rubber capes far more annoying than impressive in their sculpts. And now with wire lined capes in some toy lines, you can even “pose” the cape. So much superior.

  5. Has anyone in the UK bought Marvel Legends figures from the US? Just wondering what kind of additional charges to expect 🤔

    • All the uk dealers sell this wave for about £23.00 you may get it cheaper from the US but once you pay for shipping an taxes plus the longer shipping time it is more expensive. Try MLUK. IDT, Kapow and others.

  6. Now after your review I really want this figure. I have this thing about getting some action figures just because they look like famous people. There’s something comical and awesome about it. That’s why I got the DC multiverse DKR Joker (looks like Patrick Swayze to me). So thank you for making the Beethoven connection for me.

  7. I prefer this costume over Magneto’s white one by a longshot, but even I’m disappointed in this figure. I agree with this review, for the most part (I DO actually like the alternate head).

  8. Ever since the figure was announced I had my fingers crossed for a modern design. I was thrilled to see the Black and red outfit in use. Magneto is my favorite X-Men character so this guy took top priority for me with this wave. The end result though is . . . underwhelming. I can’t figure out why. It’s not disappointing, just not as exciting as expected.

I personally haven’t had any issues with the cape. The peg holds in place, the shoulder pads have yet to pop off, and it only slightly limits his posing. I also don’t have too much trouble with the effects. On the lower left side there is a thread of lightning with a slight hook at the end. You can easily use it to hook around the rest of the lightning, keeping the effect tight on the wrist and/or forearm. Since it is so soft you can adjust it to fit the arm size of the figure, unlike the bubble effect. Use the fingers to thread through the rest of the lightning and you have a pretty good effect. My only real issue is that the helmet head is slightly loose on the ball joint. That being said the sculpt is great. If you look closely at the white eyes they have a purple outline, giving it a glowing power look.

There is still something off about this figure, but I like it a little more each day. My love of the character may be blinding me to it’s flaws.

  9. I like this it is a different costume. Not sure what the problem is with cloth capes and why they insist on using heavy rubbery capes (think of the environment ). I understood there will be a 3 pack with his kids Scarlet Witch an a new
Quick Silver. So wonder what costume we get on this Magneto.

  10. The only good thing about this figure is that the black hands fit the most recent Hasbro Electro perfectly. No more annoying lightning hands for old sparky.
