Marvel Legends Storm Review (X-Men Apocalypse Series 2018)

Demand is high and supply at retail still isn’t plentiful, but the X-Men Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series is slowly but surely starting to permeate retail stores. I reviewed the Apocalypse Build-A-Figure last month before I got sidetracked with SDCC 2018, but now it’s back to business and time to play catch-up. And what better place to start than with one of the X-Men’s two most legendary leaders: the Mistress of the Elements herself—X-Men Marvel Legends Storm!

X-Men Legends Mohawk Storm Figure Review

Given that she’s perhaps the best known and most popular of all female X-Men characters, it was only a matter of time until we got a new Storm 6” figure in the reborn X-Men Legends series. I’m actually surprised it took three waves to get a new figure of Ororo, honestly!

Hasbro strongly hinted at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 that a new Jim Lee Storm figure was in the works (which the SDCC crowd overwhelmingly voted for a white costume on instead of silver)—but before we get to that version, we’ve got the 2018 Marvel Legends Punk Storm figure to enjoy first!

Marvel Legends X-Men Storm Figure Packaged Apocalypse SeriesAnd enjoy it I do—this is a straight-up stellar action figure. Hasbro went all-out with almost entirely new tooling for this Marvel Legends Mohawk Storm figure, and it really shows. While we’ve gotta Mohawk Storm Legends before, none of them have ever hit the classic mark as authentically as this one does.

Close-Up of Marvel Legends Storm Mohawk HeadMy favorite part of this figure is hands-down the awesome head sculpt. The Ororo Monroe portrait is positively oozing attitude with a confident smirk—this is a woman who ain’t gonna take any of Cyclops’s crap!

Hasbro X-Men Legends Storm Figure Punk MohawkThe texture, shaping and paint wash on Storm’s Mohawk look incredible—I can only dream of rocking a Mohawk as slick as Storm’s one day!

Marvel Legends Mohawk Storm Head Sculpt Side View 2018The lightning bolt earrings add a splash of color to the head, and the paint work on the eyes and eyebrows is excellent. What a killer head sculpt!

Box Back Hasbro X-Men Legends Storm Figure Mohawk PunkAnd the costume/body mold for Marvel Legends Punk Storm hits the bullseye almost as well as the head sculpt. Storm’s leather jacket looks terrific and fits perfectly, and the cuffs on her gloves are nice and tight and stay in place despite being add-on pieces.

Back of Storm Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series FigureStorm’s sexy leather pants look terrific on her long, slender legs, and the boots really pull her whole lower body sculpt together nicely. Really, the only part of the costume that doesn’t work for me is the belts, which are too loosey-goosey and destined to flop around.

Mohawk Storm X-Men Marvel Legends Figure ReviewThe poseability of Storm is the usual level of super-articulated impressiveness from a Marvel Legends female figure.

2018 Marvel Legends Apocalypse Storm Figure Doing Lightning KickWhile there’s no swivel biceps/waist/boots or double-jointed elbows, we do get ankle rockers, ball-jointed legs and upper torso, ball-hinge head/shoulders/elbows, swivel thighs and swivel-hinge wrists. Hasbro will never convince me women doesn’t need more arm articulation, but what is here works rather well.

Storm Marvel Legends 2018 Figure with Lightning Energy EffectsEven though this figure largely uses the dreaded Marvel Legends black plastic, the plastic quality is actually extremely solid. Nothing about this figure itself feels loose or “gummy” to me, and the joints are all tight and well-constructed. QC-wise, Storm herself is aces!

Marvel Legends Apocalypse Series Storm Figure Lightning EffectsWhat’s not top-notch quality-wise, however, are her new yellow lightning effects pieces (which Magneto also gets in a different color).

Droopy Effects Pieces on X-Men Legends Mohawk Storm FigureUnlike the very solid magical and cosmic effects pieces we all burned out on, these effects feel so floppy and gummy that it’s downright obnoxious. You can sort of get them to stay in place momentarily, but if you move Storm at all the lightning effects are likely to fall off or flop over in a position you don’t want. Very disappointing that these new effects work so poorly right out of the gate!

Marvel Legends Punk Storm Figure Review Apocalypse SeriesOverall: I was in the room at HasCon 2017 when this 2018 Marvel Legends Storm action figure was officially announced and revealed, and somehow I’m just as hyped for it almost a whole year as I was when I first saw it. The head sculpt is outstanding, the sculpted costume looks phenomenal, and the overall attitude of this Punk Storm Legends figure is just off the charts.

The lightning effects pieces are made of terrible floppy plastic and I remain frustrated with the limited arm articulation for female figures, but this is otherwise a near-perfect 6” ML Storm figure. If you’re a fun of the Punk Rock Storm costume, I can’t see that design ever being done better in toy form.

Marvel Legends Storm Review (X-Men Apocalypse Series 2018) — 22 Comments

    • And since Forge is in next year’s X-Men Legends wave, we’re all set! Well-played, Hasbro!

      • I’m so happy to hear this!! I love the team of Forge and Banshee in their blue and Yellow uniforms! I also liked the Forge/Storm relationship which began with LIFEDEATH in X-MEN of the mid 80’s…I always thought they belonged together.

  1. Glad you’re happy with the figure. I’m very stoked they finally made it. On the topic of Forge, I hope it’s the Marc Silvestri version that kills that Reaver in the same wave, and is closer to mohawk era Storm.

    • The way they teased at the Hasbro panel during Comic-Con, I think that’s exactly the version we’re getting.

  2. Hey Dabid, it isn’t that Hasbro thinks Female figs don’t need double jointed elbows. It’s that Dwight Stal doesn’t think they look good on females. They ARE trying to figure out a way to provide them and make them look good doing it. Dwight said several times during the con that we’re getting another female with dubs next year (I suspect however it’s going to be a larger female character like say…Titania or even a Jennifer Walters Hulk. If so, that would be a “cop out” in my opinion, but we’ll see).

  3. Good review. Really looking forward to getting Storm and the rest of the wave. Hope there are plans for a new Nightcrawler soon.

  4. Good figure and great head sculpt, but unfortunately Punk Storm is literally my least favorite look for the character. Glad to hear Lee era costume is on the way though, don’t care if her costume is white, silver, black, or whatever; just want the long hair.

  5. #NOTMYSTORM lol. Face sculpt looks good, but I need me a 90’s X-men storm.

On a side note, everyone should check out their Target if they have not lately. Earlier this week they had the exclusive 2 packs of Killmonger & Agent Ross, along with Falcon & Winter Soldier. They also had the whole Apocalypse BAF X-MEn set & the new Monster Venom BAF set.

Went back today and they now had ALL of the 10th anniversary sets, including the 3 pack infinity war set with thanos, doctor strange, and iron man, along with the Hulk/Hulkbuster 2 pack.

Speaking of the Hulk 2 pack, I’m eager to hear your review on that one. The set itself is HEAVY! I didn’t know if they would straight up re-package the Hulkbuster BAF, as that was super heavy, but they did! The hulk figure itself i’m torn about. The face on him is more of a “beat up” hulk that has bruises under his eyes and everything. Kind of disappointing to not have an alternate head to swap. Your hulk just always has to be beat up lol.

  6. Dabid, I hear what you’re saying about the lightning effects pieces, but I really like them the way they are. The “rubberiness” kind of lets you position them in different ways (way up the arm, etc.) without having to “clip on” or anything. The pieces are gentle on the figures and I think they look great. I just received my set of 7 from Hasbro Toy Shop yesterday…I am a VERY happy X-Men collector right now! Lots of GREAT figures. 🙂

  7. About the lightning pieces found that they have small hooks on them that help hold them in place around Storms arms

  8. Does anyone else want Aurora and NorthStar to show up in a future X-Men wave? Also, does anybody know what happened to the proposed Stan the Man BAF? I just found the Ross and Killmonger 2 pack at Target, also saw the Bucky and Falcon set, no BAF parts in either. Anybody know what’s up?

    • Uh, YES.
They are literally the best option for a 2-pack. Hell, they can even be thrown in a dedicated Wolverine wave .

    • Would love to complete my Alpha Flight line up from Alpha Flight # 1!!

  9. The only new parts are the head, upper torso, belt, and boots. The boots may be an add on, its hard to tell whats going on with the calf section of this figure. The rest of the body is the same as the MCU Elektra./JJ. The Vest and wrist cuffs are from Rogue.

  10. Looks great. I think I’ll be getting the Jim Lee version next year though. Great review as always.

  11. To me…this version of Storm represents the time she was powerless. I’m old enough to remember that. X-men 184 I think where Gyrich shot her with the neautrilizer created by FORGE …So I’m very excited to hear Forge is on his way. I do however want my first appearance Storm and Thunderbird! Maybe a six figure box set with COLOSSUS, NIGHTCRAWLER, STORM, THUNDERBIRD,BANSHEE AND HAVOK.

OH..I hope Forge is in his Jim Lee costume as well!

  12. This is my favorite version of storm but I would love a classic storm as well. Not a fan of the Jim lee version. I always thought it was an aesthetic nightmare. Early 90’s storm was pretty bland. She was very one note much different than the dynamic complex character she was in the 80’s.

  13. Got my figure today and I must say WOW! She’s dynamite. Now don’t get me wrong…I want FIRST APPEARANCE STORM more…but this figure is wonderful! I love the look on her face. The whole appearance is AWESOME!!

  14. This just proves that hasbro can make exceptional great figures when it wants. The head sculpt and neck area is very detailed it looks like she just stepped of the X-Men cover. Maybe she can do a douo with Punk Spidy.

  15. I really wished we had a Storm with long hair, then I customize it to my favorite all time storm appearance. The biker outfit with the long hair , Uncanny X-Men 227 . my first ever comic!!!
